Now today I do want to get buried in the text but i wanted to start first with a story.
Once upon a time there was a great king, and this king ruled over a vast kingdom with his wife and child. Now the King was strolling by a Lake one day, when he came upon something stuck fast in the banks of the lake. He walked over and pulled the object form the bank and behold It was a gold lamp, covered in sand and dirt, and in this Lamp lay a gene who had been enslaved in it for thousands of years. And as the king was cleaning off the lamp, the Gene apearred and told the king about the three wishes that were his, as the new owner of the lamp. But the King told him, I have no need for anything. i have all that I need or want. And he asks the genie. “what would you wish for?” The Genie tells him, “I would wish to be free.” “Then let it be done! Genie I wish you free and I wish to give you my last wish.” The King then took the genie home and cared for him and rapped him in new fine clothes and gave him a seat at his table with his family. But the kings wife, the queen was very beautiful. And the genie began to desired her greatly, and she, being a wicked woman, enticed him, saying “if only my husband was gone. I would run away with you!” So one night the genie crept into the kings room, and killed him in the night. as the queen had said.
Now what would you say is the punishment due to the genie?
Now if you remember where we where last week Then you know that David was born in the tribe of judah to jessie. Now he did not start out as a might hero, but as a shepherd boy who is annoted by samuel the prophet as a replacement for king Saul who God removed from being king becasue of his disobediance and pride. And we are told that David is a man after God’s own heart. And so by the power of God David goes on to defeat goliath and become a mightly warroir , and is hunted by Saul for years, until Saul and his son Jonathan, Are killed by the Philistens. And David weeps over both of them as he loved both but especially Jonathan. So David becomes king and from then on we are told of davids many victories over all the enemeies around him and he has by the point of our story reached the hieght of his military might and has created the greatest kingdom isreal has ever seen. and this is where are story begins
2 Samuel 11:1 ESV
1 In the spring of the year, the time when kings go out to battle, David sent Joab, and his servants with him, and all Israel. And they ravaged the Ammonites and besieged Rabbah. But David remained at Jerusalem.
so already we are hit with a strange situation, Its spring time, the time when Kings go to battle and David has sent all his generals and men off to the battle. But He stays home. Now based on our what we know prevously, what kind of Man or King is David? What is he known for? He is a giantslayer, a mightly man of valor the bible says, a great warrior right, the people chant in 1st samuel , “Saul has killed his thousands, but David his Tned thousands!” He is known as a Warrior! But whats happening here, Its time for battle but where is david? he’s staying home. So he’s in the wrong place, wrong time. keep that in the back of your minds, next
2 Samuel 11:2 ESV
2 It happened, late one afternoon, when David arose from his couch and was walking on the roof of the king’s house, that he saw from the roof a woman bathing; and the woman was very beautiful.
Stop Now again, this may seem like an accident, he is just storlling out on the roof, you know having a night walk, and he just happens to see this woman bathing on the roof. Now this is not common even for the time, one rooftops were treated as another room of the house often for family gatherings, and full body bathing was still less common outside of ceroiminal cleanings. Again sounds like wrong place, wrong time. Now I do not know much about bueatiful women, so ladies, how often do you wash your face? or your hair? would you say that is usally pretty consistently. RIght its usally a routien. you have a routin that you do before bed. Addtionaly if i was to do some roof bathing, what time do you think would be the most private time for such a event? Night when most people are alseep. and now lets remeber what time of year is it? Its the time when kings go to war. the time when the fighting men of isreal are supposes to be away. So wrong place worng time, starts to look more like planed place and planned time. Now we dont know this for sure but, we are told this, that david was not where he was supposed to be, it does not say that bathsiba was supposed to be somewhere else. So wether it was by davids design or an accident, david is here and he sees bathsiba and what does he do?
2 Samuel 11:3 ESV
3 And David sent and inquired about the woman. And one said, “Is not this Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?”
So this is alredy bad, he sees this woman and he say who’s she, which is already not good. and it gets worse casue he asks who is that woman I was peeping on, and his servent are like thats one of your commanders wives. Now we also need to know who uriah was. Uriah was one of David elite solders, one of the men that was with david during sauls multiplue attacks and persutes of him. he has his with im sense day one so to speak. So what does david do? “Oh my bad! Lets just forget that happend and lets get back to the battle, ive had a good rest, but theres a battle I should be at.” No what does he do? He Takes bathshiba and sleeps with her.
2 Samuel 11:4–5 KJV 1900
4 And David sent messengers, and took her; and she came in unto him, and he lay with her; for she was purified from her uncleanness: and she returned unto her house. 5 And the woman conceived, and sent and told David, and said, I am with child.
So now david takes one of his friends wives and depending on how you read the text rapes her and sends her away. no dought hoping and thinking that will be the end of it. but no it gets worse, bathshiba tells him hey im pregnaet. and I know theres that part in there that was kinda weird right it said she was purified from her uncleaness, now this might be confusing but during mensatration cerminaol cleaning was required from women and they had to wait seven days and then be washed and remove all and clean everything and this was required by levitical law, so they could enter the tabernacle. generaly this type of ceriminoal washing would be a full body cleaning, like a bath. Now why do i say well becasue if a woman has sex and then menstrates generally speaking she will not get pregnate, So if bathshiba has just finished her cycle and sense that has happend her husband has been away at war, if she gets preganet everyone know that that baby is not Uirahs. So David and bathsiba know everyone will know that. So what can david do? Well he says If i can get Uriah back here fast enough and he sleeps with her then mabye no one will suspect the baby is not his.
So he trys he bring Uriah back and tries to be all calm and ask hows the war going and uriahs probilby thinning better if you were there also, and daivd basicaly send uriah on date night and say go and spend time with your wife. but uriah is a man of character and so he’s like “No im not gonna sit her and enjoy home while all our friends are out fighting and dying! are you crazy im not gonna do that!” , so he sleeps outside the palace, doesnt even go home and so david tries again but this time tries to get him drunk, but uriah agian refuses and sleeps outside, dosent even go near his house. and david freaking out surrounded by rightouse people and so he send uriah back but he give him a letter to Joab, the comander of the armies, and tells him to put uriah at the frontlines so he is killed.” and then he takes bathshiba as his wife to try and hid his sin.
So david just keeps componding sin upon sin upon sin. and he thinks he can hidden it away. but we sever a God who sees everything. Amen
And It tells us at the end of chapter 11,
2 Samuel 11:27 ESV
“… But the thing that David had done displeased the Lord.”
Understament of the century. And so God rasies up nathan the prophet and tells him to and confornt david, scary task for nathan but he does it. and by this time Bathshiba has given birth to davids son and nathan appears to him and he tells him a parable.
2 Samuel 12:1–4 ESV
1 And the Lord sent Nathan to David. He came to him and said to him, “There were two men in a certain city, the one rich and the other poor. 2 The rich man had very many flocks and herds, 3 but the poor man had nothing but one little ewe lamb, which he had bought. And he brought it up, and it grew up with him and with his children. It used to eat of his morsel and drink from his cup and lie in his arms, and it was like a daughter to him. 4 Now there came a traveler to the rich man, and he was unwilling to take one of his own flock or herd to prepare for the guest who had come to him, but he took the poor man’s lamb and prepared it for the man who had come to him.”
So How dose David respond to this
2 Samuel 12:5–6 ESV
5 Then David’s anger was greatly kindled against the man, and he said to Nathan, “As the Lord lives, the man who has done this deserves to die, 6 and he shall restore the lamb fourfold, because he did this thing, and because he had no pity.”
and what does nathan say
2 Samuel 12:7 ESV
7 Nathan said to David, “You are the man!
2 Samuel 12:7–8 ESV
7 Nathan said to David, “You are the man! Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, ‘I anointed you king over Israel, and I delivered you out of the hand of Saul. 8 And I gave you your master’s house and your master’s wives into your arms and gave you the house of Israel and of Judah. And if this were too little, I would add to you as much more.
And he tells David because of the blood you shed, You house will be marked by bloodshed and the sword. And you did all this in secret, but I will do this to you in public, and one of your family will rise up against you and take your wives and do in public what you did in secret. You will not be able to hide the humiliation and shame like you tired to with bathsiba.
And david falls on his face and say
2 Samuel 12:13–14 ESV
13 David said to Nathan, “I have sinned against the Lord.” And Nathan said to David, “The Lord also has put away your sin; you shall not die. 14 Nevertheless, because by this deed you have utterly scorned the Lord, the child who is born to you shall die.”
This devastates David and it says he layed on the floor all day and nigh for days fasting, praying that God might spare the child, but on the seveth day the child died. and the servents are afriad to tell him there thing he was refusing to eat and lying on the floor when the child was alive! Surely, now that the child is dead he will kill himself.
but david percives the chiild is dead and he gets up and anoitns himself and cleans him slef up and eats, and the servens are like “whats wrong with you, why do you seem fine?”
2 Samuel 12:22–23 ESV
22 He said, “While the child was still alive, I fasted and wept, for I said, ‘Who knows whether the Lord will be gracious to me, that the child may live?’ 23 But now he is dead. Why should I fast? Can I bring him back again? I shall go to him, but he will not return to me.”
Now I dont know about you but this is outragous! Uriah is dead! Bathsiba is raped! and The baby is dead! and David is just off scott free! What is going on here!
How should we look at this story what are we to do with this awful showing of Isreals greatest king. See a lot of time we look at this story and we miss the poitn and we make excusess for david. Well it was just an accednt and he was really a good guy underit all, No He Rapped bathsiba and murderd uriah, and becasue of his actions bathsiba lost her son. there is no accident no, secertly good man under there.
