The Armor of God
Many scholars believe that the analogy that Paul gives in this passage of Scripture has to do with his imprisonment in Rome. Paul wrote this book in AD 61 while being imprisoned. I have heard some say that as Paul was writing under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, he looked up and saw the guard of his prison cell in his armor and began to see the similarities between this soldier and each piece of armor and the Christian walk. Thus, he begins with the understanding that we are in a spiritual battle on every single level.
Putting on the armor shows that it is something that we must actively do. The Christian walk is not a passive journey but rather an active warfare that we must be active in.
The first question Paul answers in regard to this is that we must put on the armor because we are at war with the devil, and he is subtle.
Ephesians 6:10–12 KJV 1900
Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
