In his Gospel, Luke tells of a moment where Jesus was sitting in the Temple, as people came forward to donate money into the offering box. He sees, many rich people, coming forward and giving great amounts into the box. Then comes a widow, who gives little.
Jesus speaks to his disciples, saying- Luke 21:2–4 “and he saw a poor widow put in two small copper coins. And he said, “Truly, I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all of them. For they all contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on.””
You could picture the moment, wealthy people, probably dressed up for the occasion, walking across the temple grounds with a big bag of cash, flashing and flaunting their wealth. Then, a little old lady, impoverished and obviously so, easily overlooked because of her looks, contibutes what would amount to less than a penny. So little that it wouldn’t be noticed and would beg the question- why even give in the first place?
It’s her, that Jesus says gives the greatest. Why? Because of what it cost her.
Others gave plenty more but probably wouldn’t notice it in their bank accounts but what she gave cost her. It was everything she had.
And she gave it all to contribute to the glory of the Kingdom of God. She gave, knowing God was the providence of what she had to give and that he could do with it greater things than she.
We have such a moment before us today, to contibute to the Kingdom and its work.
A Kindgom likened to a mustard seed.
A Kingdom inherited by the child-like and the meek.
A Kingdom where a few fish and loaves can feed the multitudes.
A Kingdom, which is great, not because of what we contribute to it- but because of the one who sits upon the throne of it.
A Kingdom worthy of our sacrifice. We worship a King who takes faithful, humble offerings and uses it to drive back darkness and shake the very gates of hell.
So, do you believe it? Do you believe God take what you give Him to change an eternity? Are you willing to pay the price to trust Him with what you have to give?
As one body, we give one offering, together. A small, humble offering in world of trillionaires.
Don’t you know, that to He who can do greater things, He can raise up future leaders in the Solomon Islands?
Don’t you know He can establish a church in a hostile village in the Philippines, whom will one day worship beside you in eternity?
Don’t you know how a little can strengthen Pastors and believers in Zimbabwe? How He can bring forth streams of living water to transform hearts and minds?
Do you believe, that a little may be all thats required to for a generation here at Whitehill, to be equipped to lead and guide this church for generations after we are gone?
He can. And He will.
All for the Glory of Christ Jesus, in all generations, in all places, foever and ever, Amen.
