Last time in Moses, we handled the first part of the tabernacle design and instructions from God to Moses…
That was the Ark of the Covenant…
We made a few practical applications:
God Deserves the First and Most Prominent Spot in your Life to be shared by nothing else
2. God Deserves the Worship of His Choice
3. God wants your Tabernacle to Contain the Testimony He Gives You
Regarding this tabernacle design:
Everything was in its rightful place
Everything had a specific purpose
Everything drove you closer to the presence of God
Everything was made up with what God gave Israel already (they didn’t lack anything to build what God commanded)
One more observation (conversation with Bro. Jason):
The tabernacle is laid out in the shape of the cross...
The 12 tribes surrounding the tabernacle was also placed in the shape of a cross...
Numbers 1 - Tabernacle in the middle with the Levites who had the charge over the tabernacle
Judah, Issachar and Zebulun were positioned to the east of the tabernacle
Reuben, Simeon and Gad were positioned to the south of the tabernacle
Ephraim, Manasseh and Benjamin were positioned to the west of the tabernacle
Dan, Asher and Napthali were positioned to the north of the tabernacle
God was at the center of the Children of Israel...
God was at the center of the cross as well...
Table of Shewbread
Table of Shewbread
23 Thou shalt also make a table of shittim wood: two cubits shall be the length thereof, and a cubit the breadth thereof, and a cubit and a half the height thereof. 24 And thou shalt overlay it with pure gold, and make thereto a crown of gold round about. 25 And thou shalt make unto it a border of an hand breadth round about, and thou shalt make a golden crown to the border thereof round about. 26 And thou shalt make for it four rings of gold, and put the rings in the four corners that are on the four feet thereof. 27 Over against the border shall the rings be for places of the staves to bear the table. 28 And thou shalt make the staves of shittim wood, and overlay them with gold, that the table may be borne with them. 29 And thou shalt make the dishes thereof, and spoons thereof, and covers thereof, and bowls thereof, to cover withal: of pure gold shalt thou make them. 30 And thou shalt set upon the table shewbread before me alway.
There are essentially 4 phases to the existence of the Table of Shewbread:

2. The Creation of the Table
10 And he made the table of shittim wood: two cubits was the length thereof, and a cubit the breadth thereof, and a cubit and a half the height thereof: 11 And he overlaid it with pure gold, and made thereunto a crown of gold round about. 12 Also he made thereunto a border of an handbreadth round about; and made a crown of gold for the border thereof round about. 13 And he cast for it four rings of gold, and put the rings upon the four corners that were in the four feet thereof. 14 Over against the border were the rings, the places for the staves to bear the table. 15 And he made the staves of shittim wood, and overlaid them with gold, to bear the table. 16 And he made the vessels which were upon the table, his dishes, and his spoons, and his bowls, and his covers to cover withal, of pure gold.
**Done to the exact measurements
There were no “creative interpretations” by the craftsman to the creation of the table...
It was a literal application to God’s Word...
3. The Placing of the Table
22 And he put the table in the tent of the congregation, upon the side of the tabernacle northward, without the vail. 23 And he set the bread in order upon it before the Lord; as the Lord had commanded Moses.
In the tent in the holy place (not the holy of holies)
Northward side of the tabernacle
Set bread in order upon it before the Lord
*The bread had a specific order that was given by God
4. The Use of the Table
5 And thou shalt take fine flour, and bake twelve cakes thereof: two tenth deals shall be in one cake. 6 And thou shalt set them in two rows, six on a row, upon the pure table before the Lord. 7 And thou shalt put pure frankincense upon each row, that it may be on the bread for a memorial, even an offering made by fire unto the Lord. 8 Every sabbath he shall set it in order before the Lord continually, being taken from the children of Israel by an everlasting covenant. 9 And it shall be Aaron’s and his sons’; and they shall eat it in the holy place: for it is most holy unto him of the offerings of the Lord made by fire by a perpetual statute.
12 cakes in two rows of 6 (they say based on the amount of flour, it would be roughly 60-70 pounds of bread)
It was to be placed upon the “pure table”… “Before the Lord”...done every sabbath “continually”...
But then it says, “Being taken from the children of Israel by an everlasting covenant...”
Notice: God’s instructions were still obeyed even during transit of the tabernacle (Numbers 4:7-8)
Spiritual application:
Jesus as the bread (The Bible says it would be a shadow of things to come)
Jesus as the bread (The Bible says it would be a shadow of things to come)
35 And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.
How can we make this application?
1. The bread was offered before the face of God as a sufficient offering (so was Jesus)
1. The bread was offered before the face of God as a sufficient offering (so was Jesus)
Jesus was a sufficient offering before God for our sin
2. Manna had to be ground and burned to be created...
2. Manna had to be ground and burned to be created...
Jesus had to be beaten and killed...
3. The bread was a “continual offering”
3. The bread was a “continual offering”
Here done by priest continually, but with Jesus, eternally
And now it doesn’t have to be redone...
Hence the provision of the bread...
4. The priests were commanded to spread a holy ointment on the bread
4. The priests were commanded to spread a holy ointment on the bread
Jesus had holy ointment poured on him (alabaster box)
5. The contents of the offering was a freewill offering
5. The contents of the offering was a freewill offering
The tabernacle contents, nor the bread required to go on the table, would have been there had someone not offered a freewill offering (beginning of Ex. 25)
Our payment from Jesus would not have existed had Jesus not willingly suffered the cross
6. The bread signified fellowship with God
6. The bread signified fellowship with God
The reason we can have fellowship with God is because of Jesus
The literal shewbread was the middle partition between fellowship with God and the priests...
Now that we are all kings and priests before God because of Jesus’ death, burial and resurrection, now Jesus is the middle partition, or mediator between God and man...
Concluding thought:
Before the Lord’s supper, we are to examine ourselves and approach God in holiness before partaking of the Lord’s Table...
Before partaking of the holy bread on the table of shewbread, the priests had strict rules in order to approach:
1 And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying, 2 Speak unto Aaron and to his sons, that they separate themselves from the holy things of the children of Israel, and that they profane not my holy name in those things which they hallow unto me: I am the Lord. 3 Say unto them, Whosoever he be of all your seed among your generations, that goeth unto the holy things, which the children of Israel hallow unto the Lord, having his uncleanness upon him, that soul shall be cut off from my presence: I am the Lord. 4 What man soever of the seed of Aaron is a leper, or hath a running issue; he shall not eat of the holy things, until he be clean. And whoso toucheth any thing that is unclean by the dead, or a man whose seed goeth from him; 5 Or whosoever toucheth any creeping thing, whereby he may be made unclean, or a man of whom he may take uncleanness, whatsoever uncleanness he hath; 6 The soul which hath touched any such shall be unclean until even, and shall not eat of the holy things, unless he wash his flesh with water. 7 And when the sun is down, he shall be clean, and shall afterward eat of the holy things; because it is his food.
