Sermon Title: When We Turn, God Moves
Text: Jonah 3:10
“When God saw what they did, how they turned from their evil way, God relented of the disaster that he had said he would do to them, and he did not do it.”
Big Idea:
Repentance doesn’t just change where you’re going—it changes what God does in your life.
⸻
1. GOD SEES WHEN WE TURN
“When God saw what they did…”
Jonah doesn’t say God heard what they said.
He says God saw what they did.
Nineveh didn’t simply feel bad. They turned.
Repentance isn’t just saying, “I’m sorry.”
Repentance is saying, “I’m going the wrong direction, and I’m turning around.”
Students need to understand that God isn’t looking for perfect people. He’s looking for people who are willing to turn toward Him.
Ask:
What is something in your life that you know God has been asking you to turn away from?
Maybe it’s:
A secret sin
A relationship
Pornography
Pride
Bitterness
Attention/approval
A habit nobody knows about
Something you’ve allowed to become more important than God
Punchline:
God isn’t asking you to clean yourself up before you come to Him. He’s asking you to turn toward Him.
⸻
2. REPENTANCE CHANGES OUR DIRECTION
“…how they turned from their evil way…”
This is the heart of the story.
Nineveh didn’t just acknowledge their sin. They turned from it.
Repentance means I don’t just change my mind about my sin—I change my direction.
You can feel guilty and never repent.
You can cry and never repent.
You can come forward at camp and never repent.
You can raise your hand during worship and never repent.
Repentance means I leave something behind because I have decided Jesus is better.
A great way to illustrate this:
You can’t walk toward God while intentionally walking away from Him.
2 Corinthians 5:17 says: “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.”
Jesus doesn’t just want to make you feel better about your old life.
He wants to give you a new one.
Ask the students:
What direction is your life actually heading right now?
Not what you post.
Not what your parents think.
Not what your youth pastor thinks.
Where are you actually going?
⸻
3. GOD RESPONDS TO REPENTANCE WITH MERCY
“…God relented of the disaster that he had said he would do to them…”
This is the incredible part.
Nineveh deserved judgment.
But when they turned from their sin, God showed mercy.
And here’s the Gospel:
We deserve judgment too.
Romans 3:23 says: “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”
But God didn’t leave us there.
He sent Jesus.
Jesus took the judgment that we deserved so that we could receive the mercy that we didn’t deserve.
The greatest picture of God changing His response toward sinners isn’t Jonah 3. It’s the cross.
At the cross, Jesus took our sin.
At the resurrection, Jesus conquered death.
And now the invitation is:
Turn around. Come home.
⸻
Closing: Turn Around
I’d end the sermon by bringing it back to one simple word:
TURN.
Maybe there are students in the room who have been running from God.
Maybe they’ve been hiding something.
Maybe they’ve been pretending everything is okay.
Maybe they’ve been saying:
“I’ll get right with God eventually.”
And tonight God is saying:
Turn around.
You don’t have to run another mile.
You don’t have to fix everything first.
You don’t have to become good enough.
Just turn.
Because when Nineveh turned, God showed mercy.
And because of Jesus, when we turn toward God, we don’t run into condemnation.
We run into grace.
Final line:
“You may have been running from God, but tonight you can turn—and discover that God has been running toward you.”
