I can’t help but talk about my son when I get up here. He has the best hair, the cutest smile, and probably the sweetest laugh I have ever heard. He is obsessed with Spider-Man and Paw Patrol, and he starts Pre-K in two weeks, and I know I’m going to be the one crying when we drop him off, not him.
Most of our days go pretty well, we spend lots of time building and destroying block towers, reading books, riding bikes, and even sometimes I try to show him the joys of Mario Kart. A son is kind of like a built-in best friend. I guess that is, if at one point you had to change your best friend's diaper.
We only have one fight every single day, about three times. For some reason, this kid doesn’t like to eat. No matter if it’s something he likes, has never tried before, or Mom's spaghetti. As his father, it as constant struggle to get this kid to eat. And look, I know he needs to eat; I know he will feel better if he does. In fact, it will give him life and energy to do the things he was made to do.
Yet over and over again, he sees the food, the meal prepared by his father (or let's be real, most times his mom), and he chooses his own way. To go hungry instead.
What a problem it is that we are hungry while sitting at God’s table. What a problem it is that we will soon hear the story of the resurrection, and how we are offered a new life, life abundant, through the death and the life of Jesus Christ, and choose to walk out the doors of this church, seeing the beautiful abundant food offered, the blood and the body of Christ, and walk away hungry.
Can you stop for a moment, and just ask yourself, really ask yourself, “Am I waking up every day, and eating my daily bread? Or am I walking away hungry, and then wondering why life feels so hard?”
Your Lord and Savior has offered you a meal. John 6:53-59 - Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. 54 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day. 55 For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink. 56 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in them. 57 Just as the living Father sent me and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me. 58 This is the bread that came down from heaven. Your ancestors ate manna and died, but whoever feeds on this bread will live forever.” 59
Don’t go hungry. its hear. The meal is here. Trust him.
So let us, as a group of believers, eat this bread.
And drink this cup.
Pray.
