I. Do Not Fear Because of God’s Protection - 46:1-3

A. Fact of God’s Protection - God’s Identity

English Standard Version Psalm 46

1  God is our refuge and strength,

a very present help in trouble.

Refuge
Strength
Very Present Help

B. Context of God’s Protection - Your World Turned Upside down

English Standard Version Psalm 46

2  Therefore we will not fear though the earth give way,

though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea,

3  though its waters roar and foam,

though the mountains tremble at its swelling. Selah

Is this absolutely literal language?
Isa 54:17no weapon that is fashioned against you shall succeed, and you shall refute every tongue that rises against you in judgment. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord and their vindication from me, declares the Lord.”

II. Do Not Fear Because of God’s Provision - 46:4-7

If v.1-3 speak of upheaval and turmoil, then what do v.4-7 speak of?
English Standard Version Psalm 46

4  There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God,

the holy habitation of the Most High.

5  God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved;

God will help her when morning dawns.

6  The nations rage, the kingdoms totter;

he utters his voice, the earth melts.

7  The LORD of hosts is with us;

the God of Jacob is our fortress. Selah

A. How Does God Provide for Us?

English Standard Version Psalm 46

1  God is our refuge and strength,

a very present help in trouble.

English Standard Version Psalm 46

7  The LORD of hosts is with us;

the God of Jacob is our fortress. Selah

English Standard Version Psalm 46

11  The LORD of hosts is with us;

the God of Jacob is our fortress. Selah

How is God especially with us today?
How will God especially be with us in the future?
What is your relationship to the church?
Why stay away from where God promises to be?
English Standard Version Chapter 18

20 For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them.”

1 Cor 14:24–25But if all prophesy, and an unbeliever or outsider enters, he is convicted by all, he is called to account by all, the secrets of his heart are disclosed, and so, falling on his face, he will worship God and declare that God is really among you.

B. How Does God’s Presence Remove Fear?

English Standard Version Psalm 46

4  There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God,

the holy habitation of the Most High.

5  God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved;

God will help her when morning dawns.

6  The nations rage, the kingdoms totter;

he utters his voice, the earth melts.

7  The LORD of hosts is with us;

the God of Jacob is our fortress. Selah

v.4 - Gladness
v.5 - Timely Aid
v.6 - Peace through His Word
v.7 - Confidence from His Promise
English Standard Version Chapter 13

5 Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” 6 So we can confidently say,

“The Lord is my helper;

I will not fear;

what can man do to me?”

III. Do Not Fear Because of God’s Prescription

A. Put on Your Glad Glasses!

English Standard Version Chapter 8

28 And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.

B. Grasp God’s Purposes!
English Standard Version Chapter 1

11 In him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will, 12 so that we who were the first to hope in Christ might be to the praise of his glory. 13 In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, 14 who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory.

English Standard Version Chapter 1

15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. 16 For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. 17 And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.
