What is a Disciple?
What is Discipleship
Are you a disciple of Jesus? Who is a disciple of Jesus today? Is discipleship optional?
All disciples are believers, but not all believers are disciples? Why or why not?
STORY OF SAILOR adopted here to my story: Heres the original -
PATTERNS OF DISCIPLESHIP from OLD TESTATMENT to NEW
1.) God and Adam and Eve walk in the Garden - discipleship started and corrupted
2.) Abraham and God - Yaweh slowly introduced himself to Abraham thru His cutural world view (God is patient here)
3.) Isaac - God reveals himself in Beer Lahai Roi - God that sees and knows, He was depressed because of the death of her mother
4.) Jacob - deceived and was deceived (character building season)
5.) MOSES - teaching them-Moses exemplifies biblical discipleship as both teacher and mentor, spending forty years instructing Israel in God’s ways through deep dependence on God and intercessory prayer, inviting them into relationship rather than merely providing rules.3
6.) Wisdom Literature Poverbs are relational instruction - Wisdom literature frames discipleship as cultivating discernment and godly character through relational instruction and example.3 “Son” “father relationship”
7.) Jesus as Rabbi (Book concept: Walking in the Dust of Rabbi Jesus) Talk about Rabbinic culture.
8) New Testament
KEY SCRIPTURE
KEY SCRIPTURE
And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it. For what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses or forfeits himself? For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words, of him will the Son of Man be ashamed when he comes in his glory and the glory of the Father and of the holy angels. But I tell you truly, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God.”
or
Matthew 4:19 “And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” - disciple making from I WILL MAKE YOU
Note: supporting scripture:. Counting the cost of Discipleship Luke 14:27-28
Whoever does not bear his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple. For which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost, whether he has enough to complete it?
John 13:34–35 “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” - this is for DISCIPLESHIP is love Heading
Statement on key scripture: this text is heavy but you see, Jesus has earned the love and respect of the 12 disciples at this point. He was a rabbi but so were some of the Pharasees and other religous leader but at this point, his relationship with His disciples were getting deeper that
1.) DISCIPLESHIP IS RELATIONSHIP
1.) DISCIPLESHIP IS RELATIONSHIP
2.) DISCIPLESHIP IS A JOURNEY
2.) DISCIPLESHIP IS A JOURNEY
3.) DISCIPLESHIP IS LOVE
3.) DISCIPLESHIP IS LOVE
scripture: Luke 19:10 , 1 Cor 13:13
CONCLUSION:
God’s Heart for Discipleship will produce compassion in us
Complete personal story here: My realization is that the people who discipled me didnt ask for anythin in return even if at times I ghosted them. They simply and joyfully planted seeds of faith in my life. They intenionally spent time.. why because they captured the hear of God.. they gave me hope when I felt hopeless about myself. So when I dont feel compassipn towards people and dont feel the urgency, I remember the days and the men who invested in me sowed the seed of faith .. these were times when I felt hopeless and they preached hope in Chirst and told me there is hope in you.
