THE FOUR THINGS JESUS BORROWED
THE FOUR THINGS JESUS BORROWED
After this, Joseph of Arimathea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly, for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus; and Pilate gave him permission. So he came and took the body of Jesus.
And Nicodemus, who at first came to Jesus by night, also came, bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pounds.
Then they took the body of Jesus, and bound it in strips of linen with the spices, as the custom of the Jews is to bury.
Now in the place where He was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid.
So there they laid Jesus, because of the Jews’ Preparation Day, for the tomb was nearby.
Now on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene went to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb.
Then she ran and came to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple, whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken away the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid Him.”
Peter therefore went out, and the other disciple, and were going to the tomb.
So they both ran together, and the other disciple outran Peter and came to the tomb first.
And he, stooping down and looking in, saw the linen cloths lying there; yet he did not go in.
Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb; and he saw the linen cloths lying there,
and the handkerchief that had been around His head, not lying with the linen cloths, but folded together in a place by itself.
Then the other disciple, who came to the tomb first, went in also; and he saw and believed.
For as yet they did not know the Scripture, that He must rise again from the dead.
Then the disciples went away again to their own homes.

And they made His grave with the wicked— But with the rich at His death, Because He had done no violence, Nor was any deceit in His mouth.
Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise Him; He has put Him to grief. When You make His soul an offering for sin, He shall see His seed, He shall prolong His days, And the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in His hand.
He shall see the labor of His soul, and be satisfied. By His knowledge My righteous Servant shall justify many, For He shall bear their iniquities.
Therefore I will divide Him a portion with the great, And He shall divide the spoil with the strong, Because He poured out His soul unto death, And He was numbered with the transgressors, And He bore the sin of many, And made intercession for the transgressors.
2. He borrowed a door. (v. 1)
2. He borrowed a door. (v. 1)
Now on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene went to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb.
Then he bought fine linen, took Him down, and wrapped Him in the linen. And he laid Him in a tomb which had been hewn out of the rock, and rolled a stone against the door of the tomb.
3. He borrowed some clothes. (v. 2-7)

Now when He had said these things, He cried with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come forth!” And he who had died came out bound hand and foot with graveclothes, and his face was wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Loose him, and let him go.”
4. He borrowed death. (v. 8-10)
4. He borrowed death. (v. 8-10)
Then the other disciple, who came to the tomb first, went in also; and he saw and believed.
For as yet they did not know the Scripture, that He must rise again from the dead.
Then the disciples went away again to their own homes.
“Therefore My Father loves Me, because I lay down My life that I may take it again.
No one takes it from Me, but I lay it down of Myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This command I have received from My Father.”
whom God raised up, having loosed the pains of death, because it was not possible that He should be held by it.
knowing that Christ, having been raised from the dead, dies no more. Death no longer has dominion over Him.
So when this corruptible has put on incorruption, and this mortal has put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written: “Death is swallowed up in victory.”
“O Death, where is your sting? O Hades, where is your victory?”
The sting of death is sin, and the strength of sin is the law.
But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Pilate thought He was finished.
The soldiers thought He was dead.
The Pharisees thought they had silenced Him.
The disciples thought their hope was gone.
The women thought they were coming to anoint a corpse.
But early Sunday morning…
The stone was rolled away!
The tomb was empty!
The grave clothes were left behind!
The angel was sitting there!
And Jesus Christ was alive!
And that's what makes Jesus different.
You want to find Buddha? Go to Kushinagar.
You want to find Muhammad? Go to Medina.
You want to find Confucius? Go to Qufu.
You want to find Joseph Smith? Go to Nauvoo.
You want to find Charles Taze Russell? Go to Pennsylvania.
But if you want to find Jesus—DON'T GO LOOKING FOR HIM IN A GRAVE!
The angel declared “He is not here; for He is risen!”
They put Him in a borrowed tomb—because He wasn't staying!
They rolled a stone in front to try to keep him in, but it couldn't hold Him!
They wrapped Him in borrowed clothes—because He wouldn't need them!
And He borrowed death itself—because death couldn't keep Him!
He said He had the power to take His life again.
Peter said it was impossible for death to hold Him.
Paul said death has no more dominion over Him.
And John saw Him alive forevermore, holding the keys of death and Hades!
Jesus is greater!
Greater than the grave!
Greater than death!
Greater than hell!
Every other grave says, “Here lies…”
But His grave says, “HE IS NOT HERE—HE IS RISEN!”
