The Gospel Presented
(Slide) There are facts to believe
(Slide) There are commands to obey
(Slide) There are promises to receive
(Slide) But what about Baptism for remission of sins?
(Slide) Most of “Christendom” denies that baptism has any role in salvation.
Tonight we are going to look at scriptures and let the scripture speak.
We want to examine the gospel in the light of the scriptures so there are some things for us to consider.
I. Examples of Conversion
(Slide) It is the historical writings of the first 30 years of the Church
(Slide) It shows the Great Commission being carried out (Mk16:15; Mt28:19)
(Slide) Shows the preaching and results of the Gospel message
(Slide) LETS BRIEFLY LOOK AT CHART (Insert slide) Put in handout
(Slide) You can see the Great Commission being carried out
(Slide) Note what the scripture says about each of the conversions
(Slide) Each the Gospel was preached (and it was heard)
(Slide) Some record belief, but not all
(Slide) Some record repentance but not all
(Slide) Some record confession but not all
(Slide) Baptism is stated or implied in all
(Slide) Divine Intervention?
- Luke mentions baptism in each of the conversions, do you think this could be because in the future baptism would be downplayed in regards to salvation?
(Slide) Objections to the Obvious
(Slide) Baptism is not necessary since not mentioned in some salvation passages such as Jn3:16, (Slide)
(Slide) Yet some of the salvation passages don’t mention repentance , so does that mean repentance is not necessary?
(i.e.
Act3:19; (Slide) )
(Slide) Some don’t mention faith, but does that discount other places where faith is mentioned?
(Slide) ()
(Slide) So Baptism, hum, we determine it is necessary not by when it is not mentioned in scripture, but where it is mentioned in scripture just like the other items, faith, confession, repentance
(Transition) we have looked at some examples, reasoned out the necessity.
but now let’s turn to the doctrine (doctrine = teaching) of baptism.
II.
Doctrine of Baptism
(Slide) A. Baptism is for forgiveness of sins
(Slide) Forgiveness is through and by the blood of Jesus; it is an act of God’s grace by faith in Jesus (; )
It
Without the blood there is no forgiveness
We cannot earn salvation by merit, only by the gift of God through faith in Jesus Christ
(Slide) Forgiveness is promised to those who repent and are baptized (Act2:38; (Slide) )
Baptism assures forgiveness
Through baptism we receive forgiveness through the blood of Christ
(Slide) It is apparent in scripture that Baptism and forgiveness of sins are connected
(Slide) B. Baptism the place of the receipt of Holy Spirit
(Slide) There is a promise of the Holy Spirit ((Slide) ; )
(Slide) Promised words by Peter (); promised words for Jesus in Jn7:37-39
Promised to those who believe
Promised to those who repent and are baptized
(Slide) Holy Spirit is involved in baptism
(Slide)
(Slide) We are made to drink the Spirit (1Cor12:13)
We have a washing of regeneration by the Spirit (TIt3:5)
We benefit from the Spirit’s work in regeneration and sanctification!
(Slide) C. Baptism is where we are unified with Christ
(Slide) Union with Christ is necessary for spiritual life (Jn15:4-5)
We cannot bear fruit unless united (abide) with in Christ
Baptism is please where we are united with Christ ()
(Slide) Buried with Him through baptism (Rom6:3-4)
Or as it says in (Slide) it is where we put Christ on
D. (Slide) Baptism and the newness of life
(Slide) Our newness of life is a result of our death to sin, raised as a new creature with Christ (2Cor5:17) or let’s turn to Rom6:3-7 together
We die to Christ in baptism
We rise to walk in the newness of life
we are buried and raised with
(Slide) Buried and made alive!
How about another scripture?
(Slide) ()
Baptism is not a work of man, but a work of God in which we submit!
(Slide) E. Baptism and salvation . . .
(Slide) Baptism saves us according to Mk16:16 and 1Pet3:21
(Slide) As mentioned before both Jesus and Peter say baptism saves (it is the point of salvation)
(Slide) Interesting fact in scriptures referencing baptism and salvation, baptism precedes salvation
(Slide) How does baptism save us?
1Pet3:21
(Slide) It is not the water itself that is the cleansing power
It is the appeal to God for a clear conscience through the blood of Christ!
In other words it is the place of the sinners plea for forgiveness, the place where God graciously answers!
(Slide) Some quick references
(Slide) Buried with Christ into His death (Rom6:3-4)
(Slide) Raised in newness of live (Rom6;4-5)
(Slide) Crucified with him, made free from sin (Rom6:6-7, 17-18)
(Slide) Clothed in Christ (Gal3:27)
(Slide) Washed from our sins (Act22:16)
(Slide) Sins forgiven (Act2:38)
(Slide) Baptized into the body (church) of Christ (1Cor12:13)
(Slide) So, having looked at all the scriptures, all the evidence, in what state are you in without baptism?
I read this quote jotted it down, but forgot who quoted it.
(Slide)“For in both practice and precept, in both example and exposition, baptism plays an integral part in our salvation by grace through faith.”
