Today is Pentecost

today is a day that we celebrate the birth of the CHURCH
If you go back and read the Old Testament, you will discover that Pentecost was one of the Jewish feast days.
Only they didn't call it Pentecost.
That's the Greek name.
The Jews called it the Feast of Harvest or the Feast of Weeks.
In Palestine there were two harvests each year.
It was the celebration of the beginning of the early weeks of harvest.
In Palestine there were two harvests each year.
The early harvest came during the months of May and June; the final harvest came in the Fall.
Pentecost was the celebration of the beginning of the early wheat harvest, which meant that Pentecost always fell sometime during the middle of the month of May or sometimes in early June.
There were several festivals, celebrations, or observances that took place before Pentecost.
We need to celebrate more
God expects us to celebrate!
According to the Old Testament, you would go to the day of the celebration of Firstfruits, and beginning with that day, you would count off 50 days.
The Feast of Firstfruits was the celebration of the beginning of the barley harvest.
Here's the way you figured out the date of Pentecost.
According to the Old Testament, you would go to the day of the celebration of Firstfruits, and beginning with that day, you would count off 50 days.
The fiftieth day would be the Day of Pentecost.
Since it was always 50 days after Firstfruits, and since 50 days equals seven weeks, it always came a "week of weeks" later.
Therefore, they either called it the Feast of Harvest or the Feast of Weeks.

For believers in Jesus the Messiah, the dating of Pentecost is one of the most exquisite examples of type and fulfillment in the Scriptures.
Pentecost means fifty, , .
The feast of First Fruits was to occur on the day after the Sabbath (verse 11), which was always the Sunday of Passover week. Pentecost, then, was the day after the seventh following Sabbath (verses 15–16), which would be the fiftieth day after First Fruits and also on a Sunday.
, .
The fulfillment of these feasts is striking.
The fulfillment of these feasts is striking. Jesus died the Friday of Passover week and had to be buried hastily before sunset, which was when the Sabbath began. His body remained in the borrowed sepulchre throughout the Sabbath day, but on that Sunday morning, when the priest was to offer the First Fruits offering in the Temple, Christ arose from the dead, the first fruits of them that slept ().
Jesus died the Friday of Passover week and had to be buried hastily before sunset, which was when the Sabbath began.
His body remained in the borrowed tomb throughout the Sabbath day, but on that Sunday morning, when the priest was to offer the First Fruits offering in the Temple,
Christ arose from the dead, the first fruits of them that slept ().
For forty ensuing days, the Lord appeared to His disciples in His resurrection body, and then ascended into Heaven.
Ten days later, the Sunday of the Feast of Pentecost, the Holy Spirit descended upon the believers in Jerusalem and created the ekklesia, the called out body of Christ, the church.
These fulfillments were obviously no coincidence, but were part of the overall plan and purpose of God in verifying the powerful meaning of the death and resurrection of Christ, and the establishment of the new body of believers.
We have one of the greatest transitions from the Old Testament to the New.
We see God set everything up for exactly this moment.
Jesus Death & Resurrection
The time Jesus spent on earth after He rose
The final words Jesus spoke before leaving.
All perfectly timed to set the stage for the greatest shift in the history of mankind
This period of time represents the shift from being under the law, to being under grace.
Matthew 28:16–20 NASB95
But the eleven disciples proceeded to Galilee, to the mountain which Jesus had designated. When they saw Him, they worshiped Him; but some were doubtful. And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
Jesus sums up everything He has taught and accomplished, in the great commission
Its like Jesus before He ascends into heaven , says
“I’ve done my part, now it time to do your part”
But before you do, I’m going to give you some major help
I don’t want you to do this alone
Luke 24:49 NASB95
49 “And behold, I am sending forth the promise of My Father upon you; but you are to stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.”
Luke 24:29 NASB95
29 But they urged Him, saying, “Stay with us, for it is getting toward evening, and the day is now nearly over.” So He went in to stay with them.
Acts 1:4 NASB95
4 Gathering them together, He commanded them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait for what the Father had promised, “Which,” He said, “you heard of from Me;
Acts 1:4–6 NASB95
4 Gathering them together, He commanded them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait for what the Father had promised, “Which,” He said, “you heard of from Me; 5 for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.” 6 So when they had come together, they were asking Him, saying, “Lord, is it at this time You are restoring the kingdom to Israel?”
Acts 1:7–8 NASB95
7 He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or epochs which the Father has fixed by His own authority; 8 but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth.”
Then Jesus ascends into heaven
,
After they no longer see Him, they decide to do what He said and held back to Jerusalem
There are some really important lesson here.
Jesus gave them the Great commission
“Spread my Gospel everywhere!”
I’m a driven person, I like to get in there and get things done!
I don’t like to wait!
Lesson 1. Wait till you have what you need
They had to wait for 10 days for the promise.
They had just witnessed the most amazing event in history, and Jesus tells them to wait.
Lesson 2. What do you do while your waiting?
We too will have times when we have to wait!
We too will have times when we have to wait!
We too will have times when we have to wait!
Whats does it mean to wait?
Is it simply keep doing what your doing until it happens?
Is it to do nothing?
Is it doing something?
What did the 120 do in the upper room for 10 days
Acts 2:14 NASB95
14 But Peter, taking his stand with the eleven, raised his voice and declared to them: “Men of Judea and all you who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you and give heed to my words.
Acts 1:14 NASB95
14 These all with one mind were continually devoting themselves to prayer, along with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with His brothers.
Yes they were in agreement and continuous prayer
If your waiting for God to fulfill a promise He made, devote yourself to prayer
displayed to them signs wonders and miracle
Had them do many signs and wonders themselves
a. He told them what to do,
b. demonstrated for them what He wanted them to do
c. had them practice what to do.
He gave them the perfect teaching model.
join with those who are in agreement with that Promise
They we well taught, learned from the best teacher ever!
each of them had done the miraculous, and brought forth healings under His authority
Yet with all this they were still not ready to do what He told them to do
Lesson 3 All believers were included in the promise
Lesson 3 All believers were included in the promise
This was foreshadowed in Joel chapter 2
Joel 2:20–30 NASB95
20 “But I will remove the northern army far from you, And I will drive it into a parched and desolate land, And its vanguard into the eastern sea, And its rear guard into the western sea. And its stench will arise and its foul smell will come up, For it has done great things.” 21 Do not fear, O land, rejoice and be glad, For the Lord has done great things. 22 Do not fear, beasts of the field, For the pastures of the wilderness have turned green, For the tree has borne its fruit, The fig tree and the vine have yielded in full. 23 So rejoice, O sons of Zion, And be glad in the Lord your God; For He has given you the early rain for your vindication. And He has poured down for you the rain, The early and latter rain as before. 24 The threshing floors will be full of grain, And the vats will overflow with the new wine and oil. 25 “Then I will make up to you for the years That the swarming locust has eaten, The creeping locust, the stripping locust and the gnawing locust, My great army which I sent among you. 26 “You will have plenty to eat and be satisfied And praise the name of the Lord your God, Who has dealt wondrously with you; Then My people will never be put to shame. 27 “Thus you will know that I am in the midst of Israel, And that I am the Lord your God, And there is no other; And My people will never be put to shame. 28 “It will come about after this That I will pour out My Spirit on all mankind; And your sons and daughters will prophesy, Your old men will dream dreams, Your young men will see visions. 29 “Even on the male and female servants I will pour out My Spirit in those days. 30 “I will display wonders in the sky and on the earth, Blood, fire and columns of smoke.
Joel 2:28–30 NASB95
28 “It will come about after this That I will pour out My Spirit on all mankind; And your sons and daughters will prophesy, Your old men will dream dreams, Your young men will see visions. 29 “Even on the male and female servants I will pour out My Spirit in those days. 30 “I will display wonders in the sky and on the earth, Blood, fire and columns of smoke.
Joel 2:2
The 120 were comprised of people from a diverse social economic backgrounds
men, women, old, young, rich, poor
Galatians 3:28 NASB95
28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.
The Holy Spirit is for everyone, and there is no Jr. Holy Spirit
I was filled with the Spirit when I was 10 years old, so I know God is looking simply for those who are looking for him
Lesson 4. It can not be accomplished through human knowledge
Jesus was the greatest teacher to ever live
He knew that even though He taught his disciples for 3 years
displayed to them signs wonders and miracle
Had them do many signs and wonders themselves
a. He told them what to do,
b. demonstrated for them what He wanted them to do
c. had them practice what to do.
He gave them the perfect teaching model.
They we well taught, learned from the best teacher ever!
each of them had done the miraculous, and brought forth healings under His authority
Yet with all this they were still not ready to do what He told them to do
For what God had called them to do was beyond their human ability
That brings us to the day of Pentecost
Acts 2:1–12 NASB95
When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly there came from heaven a noise like a violent rushing wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. And there appeared to them tongues as of fire distributing themselves, and they rested on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit was giving them utterance. Now there were Jews living in Jerusalem, devout men from every nation under heaven. And when this sound occurred, the crowd came together, and were bewildered because each one of them was hearing them speak in his own language. They were amazed and astonished, saying, “Why, are not all these who are speaking Galileans? “And how is it that we each hear them in our own language to which we were born? “Parthians and Medes and Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the districts of Libya around Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs—we hear them in our own tongues speaking of the mighty deeds of God.” And they all continued in amazement and great perplexity, saying to one another, “What does this mean?”
Act 2:1-12
We see God set everything up for exactly this moment.
Jesus Death & Resurrection
The time Jesus spent on earth after He rose
Lesson 5. When Holy Spirit shows up unexplainable things will happen
Genesis 1:2 NASB95
2 The earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was moving over the surface of the waters.
Holy Spirit was on the earth from the very beginning,
in we see
Loud noise
Rushing Wind
Tongues of Fire
What makes us believe we can understand everything God does?
That for it to be from God we should be able to understand it
The Bible is full of things we can not explain.
Parting of the red sea
entire armies running in fear from a few men
burning bush
talking donkey
Sun standing still
Sun going backwards
Water into wine!
dead people coming back to life
Thomas Jefferson (former US president) created his own book. He took a Bible and edited out everything that would be considered miraculous or divine.
Thomas Jefferson (former US president) created his own book. He took a Bible and edited out everything that would be considered miraculous.
In this book, he kept the words of Jesus and some of his deeds, but left out the miracles and any suggestion that Jesus is God. The virgin birth is gone. So is Jesus walking on water, multiplying the loaves and fishes, and raising Lazarus from the dead. Jefferson’s version ends with Jesus’ burial on Good Friday. There is no resurrection, no Easter Sunday. Jefferson called this version “The Life and Morals of Jesus of Nazareth.”
comparitively Its a very short book!
Healings.....miracles… God becoming man. This are all things beyond our understanding.
What drives us to believe everything God does today we can understand it?
1 Corinthians 1:27 NASB95
27 but God has chosen the foolish things of the world to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to shame the things which are strong,
I think there are times that Holy Spirit does things just to show us how much we really don’t know
Lesson 6, everyone spoke in tongues
And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit was giving them utterance.
speaking in tongues is one of the most controversial aspect of Holy Spirit in the modern Church.
I know this to be true, as people have left our church because we embrace it.
But will never turn my back on it,
For speaking in tongues is one of the most powerful things you can do.
praying in tongues gives your spirit direct communication with Holy Spirit with out your mind getting in the way.
I’ll share more on this at a later time
Acts 2:13–15 NASB95
13 But others were mocking and saying, “They are full of sweet wine.” 14 But Peter, taking his stand with the eleven, raised his voice and declared to them: “Men of Judea and all you who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you and give heed to my words. 15 “For these men are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only the third hour of the day;
Lesson 7 Spiritual intoxication is normal
Why were they considered being drunk?
It wasn’t because of what they were saying.
And they all continued in amazement and great perplexity, saying to one another, “What does this mean?”
the people understood what they were saying, it wasn’t their words that make them appear drunk?
It was the fact they were drunk in the Spirit
Ephesians 5:18 NASB95
18 And do not get drunk with wine, for that is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit,
People in the world feel alcohol makes for a great party. I want to inform them they’ve never experienced anything until you’ve be drunk in the Spirit.
Now getting drunk in the Spirit may offend some people, I just want to say 1 thing about it....get over it!
Its there in the Bible,
A remember everything satan does is simply a counterfeit to what God previously created.
Intoxication with drugs & alcohol is simply a distorted counterfeit to what the Holy Spirit wants to do in you
Now I’d love to get into Peter’s sermon, but we will save that for a later date.
Lesson 8 When Holy Spirit shows up people get saved
Acts 2:37–41 NASB95
37 Now when they heard this, they were pierced to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brethren, what shall we do?” 38 Peter said to them, “Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 “For the promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off, as many as the Lord our God will call to Himself.” 40 And with many other words he solemnly testified and kept on exhorting them, saying, “Be saved from this perverse generation!” 41 So then, those who had received his word were baptized; and that day there were added about three thousand souls.
3000 people were added to the Church in 1 day
When Holy Spirit shows up people will get saved and transformed.
It not be kept in the confines of this building
