Where the Battle Was Won

Gracious God our Father, we come on today just to say thank you. As we come to commend, celebrate, commemorate, on what you have done on that blood-stained hill, that blood soaked cross. Thank you for what our eyes have seen, ears have heard, and our hearts have felt. Thank you for your precious power, and your great anointing. And right now its preaching time and we want to hear from Heaven, we come to hear what you have today unto your people and the church. Because they didn’t come to hear from Carter, but the came to hear from Christ. Impower your people. Give me dunams power from oh high to stand declare you word boldly.  Allow me to decrease that you may increase in me so they can see more of thee and less of me.  God continue to pray that you use me as a vessel in your hands, that you will get the glory out my life. Bless this word on today that changed, challenged, and even made better, that you will be glorified, the people will be edified, and the devil in hell will be horrified.

Mark 14 32-42

32 And they came to a place which was named Gethsemane: and he saith to his disciples, Sit ye here, while I shall pray.

33 And he taketh with him Peter and James and John, and began to be sore amazed, and to be very heavy;

34 And saith unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful unto death: tarry ye here, and watch.

35 And he went forward a little, and fell on the ground, and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass from him.

36 And he said, Abba, Father, all things arepossible unto thee; take away this cup from me: nevertheless not what I will, but what thou wilt.

37 And he cometh, and findeth them sleeping, and saith unto Peter, Simon, sleepest thou? couldest not thou watch one hour?

38 Watch ye and pray, lest ye enter into temptation. The spirit truly is ready, but the flesh is weak.

39 And again he went away, and prayed, and spake the same words.

40 And when he returned, he found them asleep again, (for their eyes were heavy,) neither wist they what to answer him.

41 And he cometh the third time, and saith unto them, Sleep on now, and take your rest: it is enough, the hour is come; behold, the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.

42 Rise up, let us go; lo, he that betrayeth me is at hand.

Focus: The spiritual victory before the physical crucifixion.

Our study of the Synoptic Gospel  is bringing us ever closer to the moment when the Lord Jesus will give His life for sin, sinners, saints and the church on the cross. As Jesus approaches that hour, events in His life begin to move forward at a fast pace. As these last events unfold Jesus, life, we are allowed to witness some of the most holy events being played out side by side for humanity.   

In the context of the text, As we join Jesus and His men once again, they are in the midst of an eventful night. They have just finished the Passover celebration. They left the room where they celebrated Passover and made their way from Jerusalem down through the Kidron Valley to what we know as  A Place Called Gethsemane, to purchase the church  by the shedding of blood.

But FB, on the way to Gethsemane, Jesus discussed with His disciples all of the great truths contained in John chapters 14–17,

John 14: He starts out by comforting his disciples by saying, Let not your heart be troubled. Do you believe in God? Believe also in me?.

John 15:  He starts out by discussing the vine and the branches. He says I am the true vine and my father is the husband man.

John 16: He starts out by Promising them the Holy Spirit. He says, But now I go my way to him that sent me and none of you asking me where thou goest

John 17: He starts out With the priestly prayer.

All of this occurred as they made their way to the Garden of Gethsemane. 

In the discourse of our text, Our text today focuses in on what happened when they arrived at A Place Called Gethsemane. I would like for us to spend our time together today considering what took place in that garden that night.

Gethsemane became more than a garden where Jesus and His men spent some time. On that night, Gethsemane became a place where eternal business was transferred, for the glory of God. I want to point out some facts about Gethsemane as we discover how the church was purchased. 

It’s amazing FB, because when we look in our text today Jesus has already set His face towards Jerusalem. In the context of the text He has just finished celebrating the Passover meal with his disciples. And after the Passover meal he leaves the disciples to his prayer closet, and every child pf God needs a prayer closet, Jesus which is located at the foot of the Mt. of olives. At a place called Gethsemane.

I want you to see that it was

The weight Of Pressure;

The weight  Of Prayer;

 The weight  Of Priorities

Its imperative that we understand Gethsemane, 

``It was a place Jesus often visited with His men, Luke 22:39. Gethsemane seems to have been a refuge for the Lord.

`` Gethsemane was a place where He could find solitude from the crowds and ``ministry that occupied His life.

`` Gethsemane was a place where He could go to find a private moment to commune with His Father.

`` Gethsemane  was a sanctuary from the attacks of His enemies.

`` Gethsemane  was a place of refreshment from the long days of ministry.

`` Gethsemane was a special place for the Lord and His men

The name Gethsemane is Aramaic in origin. The word means “Olive Press”. Gethsemane was, and is, a place where olive trees grew and produced their fruit. The olives were collected, placed in a press and the precious olive oil was extracted from the olives under intense pressure.

And how many of you know that after the church had to experience some pressure.  In fact the church is experiencing  pressure right now.

You may ask how does the Church experience pressure?

I’m glad you asked

When you don’t contribute cheerfully

When ministries don’t function

When you go against the pastor vision for the church

The church has been weighted down with

seen and unseen danger,

burnouts,

Pharaoh tried to drown the church,

lied on,

talked about,

misused,

misunderstood,

‘BUT how many know that after all of that , THE CHURCH CAME THROUGH.  God’s church knows how to handle pressure!!!

Jesus and His men arrive at Gethsemane. He leaves eight of the disciples at the gate to the garden. He takes Peter, James and John with Him and they go deeper into the garden.

Why were these men singled out? It seems that they were the leaders among the group. They would see and hear things that would serve them as the led the other disciples, in the future. Jesus gave these three a time of special ministry so they could be used to help the church grow.

He will put the church and its people into situations where they can see, hear and experience things others can’t imagine. He does it so that He might use them to teach the church about the power of His grace and sufficiency.

Gethsemane is where they will come and crush and beat and press the olives together to get out of them what was in them. today have to experience our own Gethsemane. All of us in here have been pressed, pounded, pressured,

I just need one somebody who can be real with me today, that can help me testify that the Church has to Gethsemane before.

I got more down than I have ups.

I got more visitors than members.

But can I tell you why you ought to persevere in praise to Him, because if you’ve experienced Gethsemane that mean that God got something greater for you. God has something great deposited in you, that the manifestations are being revealed right before your eyes. God loves His Church  so much, He had to take you to Gethsemane to he can get something to come out of you what he deposited in you. 

My God From Zion…Lord have mercy on us, that’s why we ought to continue to persevere today because God send us the church through our own moments of silence, our personnel crushing places to get out of us, what He has deposited in us.

When you been to Gethsemane

You pray better

You serve better

You come to church better

You tithe better

You preach better

You sing better

You play better

PAUSE!!!

The price HE paid for the church.

It was Purchased with His Blood

How do you know it was purchased with his blood?

I’m glad you asked.  Well 1st of all.

1st Point: The weight Was A Purchased under Pressure

Jesus, continued in prayer. Now according to the gospel of John Ch 18, Jesus on a regular basics meet his disciples here but yet this would be his last time. This is his last time meeting them in the garden of Gethsemane. I found it interesting.

That it’s imperative that we grasps the fact that before Jesus is

Deceived

Detained

Tested

beaten, and denied and crucified.

We find that Jesus spends his final moments in prayer. It’s something about a praying saint.  And in the context of the text we find that Jesus prayed, not in the sorrow

 but before the suffering.

Ok. Ok. Let me lay it in your lap. Notice today, that Jesus Prayed before the suffering and not in the suffering. And in life moments of the church, we must make prayer the most important part of our ministry. We must be effective in prayer.

Its something about a praying saint!!!!

And it’s a sad commentary to only talk to God when we in trouble. When we get out of trouble, He can’t hear you say anything.

You come to church and don’t even say amen, wave your hands, say TY. As a matter of fact some of us come to church, and act like we’ve done God a favor by showing up,

My God From Zion….

But God sent me here today to let you know He has favored taylor made for you, no longer can we come to church and

don’t say nothing,

don’t give nothing,

don’t give

Him praise,

don’t give Him Honor,

don’t give Him glory..

And since we just rehearsing, I just need a church that learned how to

praise Him

before the storm,

worship Him

before the discord.

I just need somebody who have learned how to praise Him before you got to Church.

Before Choir rehearsal.

Before Bible Study.

Before Prayer Meeting

Before The business Meeting

Because , in the times that we live in, we can’t go a another,  day, week, month, year, without talking to the Lord.

FB, as a church we are going to be intentional in Prayer. Prayer is not an accident or incident it a divine appointment.  Prayer has to be premeditated. 

The old church use to say it like this:

Father, I stretch  my hand to thee. No other help I know. If thou withdraw Thy hand from me, O, whither shall I go?

Precious Lord, take my hand Lead me on, let me stand I'm tired, I'm weak, I'm lone

Through the storm, through the night Lead me on to the light Take my hand, precious Lord Lead me home

It’s gonna be hard to serve without any supplication. It’s just making good sense for the church to just have communion to God.

Now FB, 

it gonna be hard to worship Him,

to praise Him,

It’s  gonna be hard to lift up Holy Hands

It’s gonna be hard to worship to Him..

in this house when you don’t worship Him at home.

In fact, don’t inspect you to do something in this house that you don’t do at you own house

But I got a church who can praise today because , you didn’t wait to get to church this day to talk to the Lord, you been talking to him all day long.

In verse

Gospel: Luke: 22:42

42 Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done

Gospel: Matthew: 26: 39

Oh, my Father, if it be possible, Let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou will

But in Gospel: Mark 14:36

36 And he said, Abba, Father, this means, father. This word Abba literally mean papa, daddy. It’s a turm of familiarity. Its amazing because no Jew would ever call God alone Father, but yet when the Lord calls on thee affectional, intimate, personal name of God as if He is pleading for that intimate love to rescue Him.

MY GOD FROM ZION:

As Jesus suffered there in the Garden, He began to talk with the Father. There are a few things we notice. We see:

 What a beautiful record of our Lord’s conversation with the Father. He first addressed Him as Abba. This is the Aramaic word for “papa” or “daddy.” This was what a small child called his father from day to day. It was the address of a child’s love and dependency.

▪ Jesus had an intimate relationship with the Father and was depending upon Him for strength in this time of need. Jesus knew the Father was in complete control and that all things were possible with Him. We can find comfort in these words of Jesus. We have been adopted into the family of God. We can call upon God as a child who needs His mighty hand of provision, providing, protection, . With God all things are possible!

See, Jesus is teaching us today that, in the life of the church, if you can keep talking to Him when life is pleasurable you can still talk to Him when life is painful.

I wish I had some help in here.

So, let me pose a question. When was the last time God heard from you? When was the last time you talk to the Lord? Because if you learn how to pray in the comfortable moment in church, it will be easy for you to pray when its uncomfortable in church

FB, it’s imperative that we realize that you have a cup. How ever we know what’s on the heart of Jesus because He says in

42 Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done.

This cup is a symbol from the old testament the divine wrath, this cup Jesus say please remove it, please take it away. Please get it away from me. But He understood that the power of prayer will cause Him to confirm to Gods will.

As Jesus prayed He said, 42 Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done.  …” When you read this prayer, do not think for an instant that Jesus is trying to get out of going to the cross. He was born for that purpose,

Rev. 13:8. He was the “Lamb slain from the foundation of the world”,

. No one was forcing Him to go to the cross. He told the Pharisees,

“I lay down my life, that I might take it again. No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father,” John 10:17–18.

If Jesus wasn’t praying to avoid the cross, what was He praying for in the garden that night? In Matthew’s account He records the Lord’s words as follows, “O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me,” Matt. 26:39. It is possible that Jesus was asking the Father if accomplishing salvation another way was a possibility within the Father’s redemptive plan. It is almost as if He prayed, “If there is another way, let Me do it that way.”

Jesus says remove this cup from me, but you must understand beloved that God couldn’t no allow him to miss the cross. He says all things are possible I know you able to remove this cup. But FB, let be real, if God remove the cup, we got a problem.

See, if He don’t go to the cross the church is in trouble, we got some big problems because

If He doesn’t go to the cross

Satin has the triumph victory.

Heaven is vacant.

Hell is packed.

The bible isn’t accurate.

The promises of God are all untruths.

There is no redemption for mankind.

Satan wanted Jesus to circumvent, avoid, evade, skirt, the cross, and to go around God divine plan for the church, God yielded plan of saving us from our sins.

But I got some good news today He went to the cross. . I just need one somebody that will help me give glory and say I know he died.

HE died didn’t he die. But early!!!!!

Is there anybody in here that can get excited because He died.

I holla because He died.

I scream because He died

Don’t sit here like you always been in church.

We all got some short coming in our life!!!

Its free Amen but its costly. It’s not a cheap grace/mercy. It’s a salvation that was paid for with a broken fleshly body, that you and I are guaranteed eternal life.

MY GOD FROM ZION:::

But If he had not died!!!! You wouldn’t be here right now. So, I’m glad He died!!!

That why God put it on record himself when he says that salvation will come through a blood sacrifice. Because without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness, reconciliation, resolution, remission for sin.

But the truth of the matter today is we could not handle what was in the cup.

Well, Pastor what’s in the cup?  I’m glad you ask….

Your sins...

My sins...

Your grandmother who served on the mother board

Your aunt who on the usher board

Your uncle who is a deacon

Your daddy who is the pastor

Was in the cup.

Think about it, Jesus is about to become sin on the cross, for the church2 Cor. 5:21.

For the first time in eternity, He will be separated from His Father, Mark 15:34. He will be forsaken, abandoned and judged by His Father for the church. Thoughts of drinking that most bitter of cups must have overwhelmed the mind of the sinless Son of God!

That “cup” represented all the wrath and hatred of God against sin. That “cup” symbolized the full, undiluted wrath of God that was about to be poured out on Jesus.

While the knowledge of all that He was about to suffer physically must have terrified the mind of Christ, He was not afraid of the pain of the cross. However, the very thought of becoming sin, and being judged and abandoned by God was unacceptable to the sinless Son of God

I would also remind you that Jesus is at the point of death. It is a possibility that He was praying to live so that He could go on to the cross. He did not want to die here. He wanted to finish the task He had been given by the Father.

Church, that’s why you got to learn how to accept you own cup. Every day will not be sunny . You will have some sorrows, sufferings, sickness and some situations. You will have some troubles, trials, tragedy’s, but you got to learn how to accept it because

Jesus shows us, I will give you strength

FB. God will give your strength to handle whatever is in your cup.

Finally: Point: The weight  Was Purchased for a Purpose

My God from Zion, that some good alliteration. 

Jesus and his disciples, began to be sore amazed, and to be very heavy to be sore amazed, and to be very heavy;

Jesus  with all the agony and struggle, and He started to think about the outher disciples. Is amazing because while He’s at His own overwhelming place in ministry, He started thinking about somebody else. But when HE finds then, they sleep.

37 And he cometh, and findeth them sleeping,

While Jesus is praying and wrestling with the greatest wseight, any man ever tried to carry, the disciples are asleep. Jesus commanded them to “watch”, but they are tired and they all fall asleep. These same three men slept though the transfiguration, Matt. 17. Now, they sleep through the greatest spiritual struggle the world has ever witnessed,

These men had the privilege of watching the Great High Priest of Heaven as He approached the Father in the Holy of Holies.

They had a privilege no other men had ever enjoyed, and they slept through it all! What a tragedy!

Jesus, priority was the will of His Father.

Their priority was themselves and their own needs.

Now, in their defense, it was quite late. It was after midnight. Also, sleep is an escape. These men, given what they have heard, are surely depressed, frustrated and confused. It is possible that they slept out of necessity rather than indifference.

Church, being that as it may, it still does not excuse them from sleeping when the Master said to “watch”. The fact is, they really didn’t believe all the things He told them about His betrayal and His death. They probably thought He was being dramatic, so that went to sleep.

Jesus returns and finds them asleep. When He does, He speaks to Peter. Notice that He calls him “Simon”, v. 37. In the gospel of Mark, This was Peter’s old name. It means “to hearken, or to listen”. Peter hadn’t listened to the Lord and he wasn’t acting like the new man Peter. He was acting like to old man Simon. He wasn’t acting like “the Rock”. Peter had just boasted that he was willing to die with Jesus. Now, he can’t even stay awake while He prays for one hour.

Let’s be real but Peter just had promised that he was willing to Die for Jesus. But now He sleep. James and John are known to be the sons of thunder. They suppose to be Jesus ride and die fellas. But now they are sleep. And FB, you got to really careful of people who claim they for you because truth today is, they might be sleeping on you.

The difference from a praying saint and a sleeping saint, they ain’t worried who said something.

They just think about how good God is.

They start thinking about How He kept them.

How he brought them.

How He never left them.

And they hand go to waving.

And the next thing you ought to know they start lifting on their feet.

Are there any praying saints in the house today who know what prayer can do? I need somebody who aint ashamed to testify I’m a praying saint. I aint no sleeping saint. In fact, I’m praying right now because I need God to do something for the individual that think God made a mistake in creating them

Sleeping saints.

Speak to you in church and tomorrow in Walmart on isle 15 will pass you up.

Will have a bible in their hand and not in their heart. 

Will speak in tongues and wont speak to nobody.

You got be careful because a sleeping saint will desert you, but a praying saint will stand with you.

After he saw them sleep, He left them and went back to praying. Church that’s a shout. Because when folk go to sleep on you, you got to leave them go back to praying. In other words, you have to persevere in prayer, but this is the shout.

This I my whole thesis I been trying to get to today

All thought prayer did not move the cup. But let me show you what prayer did for Him.

Even though it didn’t move the cup.

It gave him strength to deal with the cup.

God will continue to give you strength to deal with any thing that happens

And I just need a church that says I can deal with it when I get off my knees. I there anybody who learned how to talk to the Lord and now you can deal with some stuff that you couldn’t deal with before.

Somebody, got a bad Dr. report, but you left there shouting saying I know God is still a healer...

Somebody got a death call last week, but after the call, He says, I know God is a deliverer.

I need somebody who had received a pink slip, but look at God, Lord aint never left me yet, He kept a roof over my head. Food only table. And if He can do it before He’s able to do it again.

And is there anybody in this house who can give Him praise because even though if he don’t move it God will give our strength to deal wit it.

I been preaching over 30 minutes and some of yall still got the do not disturb sign on your faces.

you need a message, in your misery.

you need a text, in your tests.

you a craving, in your valley.

you need a scripture, in your struggles.

you need a command, in your catastrophes

you need a revelation, in your situation

you need declaration, in desolation

you need the word of God to direct you

you need the word of God to correct you

you need the word of God to comfort you

you need the word to strengthen you

The context,  of the text, reveals, that Jesus struggled in the Garden. 

But the truth is, Jesus understood that this was not the first time, that we saw a man that struggled in a garden.

This aint the First time we saw a man struggle in the garden.

In Genesis Adam struggles in the Garden of Eden.

And failed.

But when Jesus struggles in the garden of Gethsemane, I got good news for you He’s exceeding because He continued to do the will of the Father. 

Judas betrayed Him.

Peter denied Him.

The people mocked Him.

But the church Kelp on Moving. 

Matthew 16:18

18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. 19 And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.

And the good news today He kept on moving. It comes a time on your life that no matter why you got to go though you got to keep on moving.

Think for a moment about the death Jesus suffered for us at Calvary.

1. He was Beaten

2. He Was Scourged

3. He was Spit Upon

4. He was Mocked

5. His beard was Plucked Out

6. He was Stripped Naked, in front of His mother

7. He was Nailed to the Cross and Crucified

8. Ribboned with spikes in His hand and in His feet.

9. Speared in His side

Lied on.

Talked about.

Mis used.

Abused.

Taken from one judgement hall to another.

Suffered.

Blead, and dies a shameful death on the cross that we might have the right to the tree of life.

His mind was already made up!!! He Kelp on moving….

If Jesus would have failed in Gethsemane. There would be no Calvary.

And if there is no Calvary. Then there would be no resurrection.

And if there is no resurrection. Then there would be no sal---vation.

And good news today is

yea

the sacrifices

He made for the Church

Think about

How HE purchased your

Salvation of Calvary

Think about

How HE purchased your

sins

If HE could sacrifice his life

For the church

Then surly

you can offer.

him the sacrifices of praise

Because

If He gave

His body

to the cross

If HE gave

his feet

to the spike

If He gave

His Head

To The crown

Ugh

If he gave

Uh Hun

His hands to the nails. 

If HE gave

His body

To the grave

Then surly

You ought to

Give God

Your best praise

Can you testify when I wasn’t fit to live

And I was scared to die

Because:

One Friday on Golgotha Hill

One Friday on that blood soaked cross.

It was the sixth hour,

and darkness filled the earth,

until the ninth hour,

yall know what HE did don’t you….

and he put his head in the locks of his shoulders and HE gave up the ghost, so that I can have the Ghost!!!

He Died…DIDN’T HE DIE..

He died until the Earth rocked and Reeled

He died until the curtains in the Temple torn in two,

He died until the moon dripped away in blood

He Died until elements of nature started suffering fits of causemic e-pa-lepecy.

He Died Until the grave got sick of its stomach and started vomiting up its dead.

He Died until the dead in Christ started a protest walk down the streets of Jerusalem.

He Died until the Santerían soldier said I think we killed the wrong man. Surly 3. This must be the Son of God.

He Died until the sun went out in the middle of the day. Because the sun and the son, couldn’t shine at the same time.

He Died the SUN didn’t shine because, the SUN and the SON both provide light, but they couldn’t shine at the same time, but if you walk in the light of the SON you’ll never be in darkness,

He Died until my soul got redeemed.

He Died to put clapping in my hands.

He Died to put running in my feet.

They took Him down

Placed Him in a borrowed tomb…

Mama said when you borrow something always give it back. 

He stayed right there All night

Friday night. 

He stayed there all Saturday..

He stayed there all-night Saturday Night..

Sin had a conversation with death,

Mr. Death said can u hold him down. 

Death said you better check my resume.

I held down Adam,

I held down Eve,

I held down Abraham,

I got Isaac and Jacob,

I went got Solomon,

I got Moses,

I got Arron,

I got old praying Hanna

I would have had Enoch but He kept on walking 

I got Joshua,

I got Gidon,

I got Ezekiel,

I would have had Jehoshaphat, but he got caught up too fast

I got Isaiah,

I got Daniel,

I got Shat rack, Meshack, and Abednego,

Nehemiah

Jeremiah

Obadiah

Zephaniah

Zechariah

I got them all down,

In a few more years I’m going get

Matthew, Mark, Luke,

I’m going get John. 

I got to get Acts,

I’m going get Romans,

I need Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians,

But Early!!!!!

And then early

On the 3rd day morning

Something started happening.  

You know what it was.

Something

started happening.

The grave could not hold,

What holds it.

And the bible says,

On that Sunday morning,

Jesus, finished the race.

You know what happened,

Early Sunday morning

PLAY WITH IT!!!!

He got up,

Yes He did

Look at somebody,

And say Neighbor,

Early Sunday morning

He got up.

He got up

on resurrection ground

And declared.

When He got Up

Out of that grave

He made a declaration,

REVEALED revelation,

ASSURED affirmation,

PROCLAIMED proclamation,

PRESENTED presentation,

Shared manifestation

With one foot on the sea

One foot on dry land

And HE said,

I got all power,

In my hand.

I wanna tell you Nazerene Missionary Baptist Church,

After 105 years,

I know your race,

May get a little rough.
