Psalm 9:10 — "Those who know your name trust in you, for you, LORD, have never forsaken those who seek you."
READING FOR ILLUSTRATION - Matthew 14:22-33
Can I see a quick show of hands—how many of you consider yourselves good backseat drivers?
Be honest! If you are sitting next to your spouse right now and they didn't raise their hand, feel free to raise it for them.
BACK SEAT DRIVERS ARE GREAT! - sitting in the passenger seat, tapping your foot on an imaginary brake pedal, and gasping every time the person driving gets within thirty feet of another car.
Why do we do that? Because we hate not being in control. We think that if our hands aren't on the wheel, we aren't safe.
But the truth is, the illusion of control is just that—an illusion. You can drive perfectly and still hit traffic. You can plan every single detail of your week, and a single phone call can completely change the direction of your life!
When the unexpected happens, our natural instinct is to grab the steering wheel of our lives and yank it.
But today, we are going to look at what happens when we finally trust God to be the driver of our lives!
We live in a world obsessed with control.
We track our steps, plan our careers, insure our assets, and attempt to micromanage our futures.
But sooner or later, life delivers a reality check. A diagnosis catches us off guard, a relationship fractures, or a financial storm rolls in.
In those moments, our illusion of control shatters, leaving us anxious, exhausted, and asking the age-old question: How do I actually trust God when everything around me is shaking? The disciples had to learn that lesson Matthew 14:22-33
Trust is easy to talk about when the sun is shining, but it is forged in the dark.
The psalmist tells us in Psalm 9:10 that "Those who know your name trust in you." In the ancient world, a name wasn't just a label; it represented a person’s character, authority, and track record. To know God’s name is to know His flawless character.
To help us move trust from an abstract concept into a daily, practical reality, we are going to look at the T.R.U.S.T. Framework. This five-part anatomy of reliance gives us concrete steps to anchor our souls when the storms of life hit. And we are going to link this to the disciples need to trust Jesus when He sent them out onto the lake with a storm brewing in Matthew 14:22-33
Let me quickly summarise our reading in Matthew 14:22-33
Let me quickly summarise our reading in Matthew 14:22-33
Jesus Sends the Disciples Ahead (Matt 14:22-23)
Immediately after feeding the five thousand, Jesus makes the disciples get into a boat to cross the Sea of Galilee while He goes to pray alone on a mountainside.
The Storm Approaches (Matt 14:24-25)
The disciples are far from shore, struggling against strong winds and waves.
Around the early morning hours, Jesus walks on the water toward them.
Peter Seeks reassurance of Jesus presence and power and asks to join Him on the water. Peter actually walks on the water by Faith (Matt14:26-29)
The disciples initially think Jesus is a ghost and are terrified.
Jesus reassures them: “Take courage! It is I; do not be afraid.”
Peter asks to walk on the water toward Jesus. He does so successfully while focused on Him.
Peter then Doubts and is Rescued (Matt 14:30-31)
Peter notices the strong wind, doubts, and begins to sink.
Jesus immediately rescues him, saying, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?”
The Disciples Worship in Recognition of Jesus’ Power (Matt 14:32-33)
Once in the boat, the wind ceases.
The disciples worship Jesus, acknowledging, “Truly you are the Son of God.”
So let us learn important lessons in TRUST by considering the T.R.U.S.T. Framework.
T – Take Him at His Word
T – Take Him at His Word
The first aspect of trust is foundational: Take Him at His word.
Our modern culture tells us to follow our hearts and trust our feelings. But human emotions are notoriously unreliable. One morning you wake up feeling victorious; by Tuesday evening, you feel defeated and abandoned. If your faith is built on the shifting sand of your emotions, your life will be an emotional rollercoaster.
Think of God’s Word like the safety briefing on a commercial flight. If we are honest we don’t always pay much attention to these instructions BUT when the plane hits severe turbulence and the cabin starts shaking, your feelings might tell you that the aircraft is going down. Fear screams that you are unsafe. But you don't run to the cockpit to override the pilot. Why? Because you choose to rely on the engineering of the plane and the expertise of the crew over the panic in your chest.
Trusting God means deciding that what He says is truer than what you feel.
TIme and again, the disciples had to TRUST JESUS by taking Him at His word - Go out to the other side; “Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid.” “Come”!
Trust in God Amid Uncertainty The disciples face a literal and metaphorical storm. Life’s challenges can feel overwhelming, yet trust in God allows us to act with courage despite fear.
When your feelings say, "I am completely alone," you must choose to stand on His Word which declares, "I will never leave you nor forsake you" (Hebrews 13:5).
When your anxiety shouts, "There is no way out of this," you anchor your mind to the promise that "God will supply all your needs according to His riches in glory" (Philippians 4:19).
Taking Him at His word requires us to open the scriptures daily. You cannot stand on promises you do not know. Stop feeding your fears with worldly noise and start feeding your faith with the unchanging truth of God's Word.
R – Rest in His Presence
R – Rest in His Presence
Once we choose to believe His Word, the immediate by-product is peace. Just like the storm calming down once Jesus gets into the boat! And then the second step is to Rest in His presence.
There is a distinct difference between human grit and spiritual rest. Grit says, "I will work harder, sleep less, and force this situation to work." Rest says, "I have done what I can do, and now I will step back and let God be God."
In Exodus 14, the Israelites were trapped. The Red Sea was in front of them, and Pharaoh’s army was charging from behind. They panicked. But Moses gave them a startling command in verse 14: "The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still."
Resting in His presence is an intentional pause. It is a refusal to let the chaos outside dictate the peace inside. It means taking time in prayer not just to rattle off a laundry list of demands, but to sit quietly, breathe deeply, and remind yourself that the Creator of the universe is in the room with you.
Imagine a exhausted toddler throwing a massive tantrum because they are fighting sleep. They kick, they scream, and they struggle against their mother’s arms. They think they are fighting for their independence, but what they actually need most is to just stop fighting and collapse into the safety of their parent’s chest.
When you rest, you stop running on your own limited strength and allow His supernatural power to recharge your spirit.
U – Understand the Outcome Doesn’t Depend on You
U – Understand the Outcome Doesn’t Depend on You
The third step is liberating, but it requires deep humility: Understand the outcome doesn’t depend on you.
Much of our anxiety comes from carrying a burden we were never designed to bear—the burden of outcomes.
We think we are responsible for saving our children, fixing our spouses, securing the promotion, or healing our own bodies. We take on the role of General Manager of the world we inhabit BUT Scripture gives us a different job description. 1 Corinthians 3:6 says, "I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God has been making it grow."
Your job is obedience; God’s job is the outcome. Your job is to sow the seed, love the person, do the work, and pray the prayer. Once you have done what God has asked you to do, the results belong entirely to Him.
When you truly grasp this, the heavy pressure lifts. You can sleep at night knowing that the weight of the future is resting on shoulders infinitely broader and stronger than your own.
Like Peter we can discover we can only walk on water if Jesus is present with us! It is when we are at our worst that God Responds to Trust with Support - When Peter falters, Jesus immediately reaches out to save him.
Trust does not mean perfection or never failing; rather, God’s love is present even when our faith wavers.
S – Secure in His Sovereign Will!
S – Secure in His Sovereign Will!
To sustain this framework through deep disappointment, we must Accept that God is sovereign and He directs us in the way He wants us to go.
Sovereignty means that God is the supreme authority. Nothing catches Him by surprise, nothing thwarts His ultimate plans, and nothing passes into your life without His soverign will permitting it!
Like to disciples we can view our life’s storms as dangerous and u8nsettling ot we can focus on the presence and power of Jesus to make it all right!
Romans 8:28 “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”
Think of a tapestry woven patiently by the artist. If you look at the backside of the tapestry, it appears to be just a mess of random threads, knots, and chaotic tangles, without pattern or order BUT when the master weaver turns the tapestry over, you see a beautiful, cohesive masterpiece.
Accepting God’s sovereignty means laying down our demands for immediate explanations. It means arriving at the place where we can say, "Lord, I do not understand this diagnosis. I do not see why this door closed. But I accept that You see the whole tapestry while I only see a single thread." - Isaiah 55:9 reminds us, "As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways."
Trust is not demanding that God explain Himself to us; trust is believing that if He did explain it, we still wouldn't have the capacity to fully comprehend His brilliant, eternal design.
We must accept that He is in control, even when life feels completely out of control.
We must invite Him into our ‘boat’ and expect Him to calm the storm!
T – Testimony of Previous Experiences
T – Testimony of Previous Experiences
Finally, when the present moment feels overwhelming, we must lean on the Testimony of previous experiences.
Fear can cause us to forget that we have been in storms before and God has brought us through!
How many times previously has Jesus performed miracles; solved problems; done the impossible? He has a great track record of deliverance so why doubt Him now?
So we need to record the miracles of deliverance in our lives and take a mental inventory of your history with God.
Remember the time you didn't know how the bill would get paid, but the provision arrived just in time.
Remember the heartbreak that you thought would break you forever, yet here you are, breathing and smiling again.
Remember the closed door that broke your heart, which later opened up a path better than anything you could have dreamed.
God's past faithfulness is a guarantee of His future performance. If He came through for you then, He will come through for you now. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever.
"Those who know your name trust in you, for you, LORD, have never forsaken those who seek you."
Conclusion:
Conclusion:
Trust is not a passive emotion; it is an active, daily choice. It is a framework for living.
This week, when anxiety or fear begins to tighten its grip, run your situation through the T.R.U.S.T. framework:
TAKE HIM AT HIS WORD! - Stand upon Scripture!
REST IN HIS PRESENCE - Spend time with God?
UNDERSTAND THE OUTCOME ISN’T MINE - Give up the control of your life?
SECURE IN HIS SOVEREIGN WILL - Know that His plans will succeed?
TESTIMONY ON PREVIOUS EXPEREINCES - Remember all that He has done adn trust Him to do it again!
We can trust that He is with us through every challenge we face, and we are ultimately going to come out stronger in the end.
Proverbs 3:5-6 says, Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.
