As always thank you for coming tonight
last week we talked about Jesus becoming human so he come be the sacrificial lamb and so that he could be with us
tonight we are going to look at the first of Jesus’s miracle
First i have a question for you.

What are some of the most iconic logos?

ask two or three students
yeah i like all of those
did you know that most logos have hidden meanings
Fedex has a hidden arrow in between the e and x
this simples effeicany and speed
or amazons arrow goes from there a to the z to symbol they sell every thing from a to z
so why do companies do this anyway
well its to show two things
that something is authentic and what the company is
tonight we are going to see Jesus show how is authentic and he will teach more about who he is
so if you have your scripture turn to john 2:1-12
John 2:1–12 ESV
On the third day there was a wedding at Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. Jesus also was invited to the wedding with his disciples. When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.” And Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does this have to do with me? My hour has not yet come.” His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” Now there were six stone water jars there for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons. Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water.” And they filled them up to the brim. And he said to them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the feast.” So they took it. When the master of the feast tasted the water now become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew), the master of the feast called the bridegroom and said to him, “Everyone serves the good wine first, and when people have drunk freely, then the poor wine. But you have kept the good wine until now.” This, the first of his signs, Jesus did at Cana in Galilee, and manifested his glory. And his disciples believed in him. After this he went down to Capernaum, with his mother and his brothers and his disciples, and they stayed there for a few days.
lets pray

Why does Jesus perform miracles?

Have you ever wondered this?
well let’s take some time to see why
in a nut shell it is because he wants to show he is who he is and teach us something about him self
now this is his first miricle and we can bush it off as just something cool
but i think if we take time we will see something deeper, something that is full to the brim
So to the first point, to show us who he is
Jesus does miricles to show us that he is who he says he is
or to show that he is authentic?
how do we know this well let’s look at the surronding context we all ready read
John 1:6–7 “There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came as a witness, to bear witness about the light, that all might believe through him.”
what does this tell us, that the witness of John is to convice us to beilve that Christ is who he says he is
and the rest of the book is going to pick up on this theme
so the first reason why Jesus preforms miracles is to show us that he is who he is, so we may believe
that’s why in (v.11) its called the first of his signs, because a sign maybe with a logo, shows you what something is
simply
but i want to adress how we can error
ok let be honest to witness a miricle would be amazing, there is no one in this room who has not wanted that
It could be omthing silly as become invisable so you don’t have to go to school
id wish for that
or more serious
it could be healing,
a mending of reationship that seems like it would be impossiable
we all want to see a miracle
which often in of themselfs are good things
but what is a miracle
its a sign of the better thing
This may be a helpful analogy
i love Chick fa la
its great
now image that i decide i want chick fa la
so im going around youth group and church telling everyone how i want chick fa la
so i finally give in and drive there but there closed its sunday
but i love chick fa la
so i decide to wait and stare at the sign all night and i just keep staring
then moday happens
and i just keep looking at the sign
what wrong,
the reason i love chick fa la is not the sign, even though its a good thing
its the thing its self the sandwich the food
what my point
hey we want to see miracles, and they can be good things
but we don’t want to be the poeple who so want to see a miracle that we miss JEsus
a mircle is a sign of who Jesus is
what does a sign do? it points you to the real thing
we have acces to the best thing
don’t loose hope when you don’t get the sign you want
we should be confident that we have what we need in Christ
dont’t let the good things distract you from the best thing
don’t let waiting on a specific mircle you want make you miss the mirecle of knowing Jesus
So miracles shows us the authenticy of something,
JEsus thus perfoms this mircale of turning water into wine to show that he is who he says he is
and how do the disciples respone
they beivle in (v.11)
but he does not only do miracles to prove who he is he also uses them to teach
so what does water turning into wine teach us

Fulfillment of the law

we are going to look at three parts to see that this passage teaches us, the day, the jars, and the wine
First the day
its a wedding day, and the passages says its the thrid day, last week actualy wenthrough 4 days
so now we are on day seven
what dors that signal
it signals complete as that is what 7 often means in scipture
so now look at John 2:6 the jars “Now there were six stone water jars there for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons.”
what are these jars for, rites of purification
or laws things to fullfill the law in the OT
what happens to the jars, they are filled to the brim in (v.7)
whats the idea
Jesus is showing that he is fulfilling the OT laws to the max
all the rules
Remember two weeks ago when we read John 1:16–18 “For from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. No one has ever seen God; God the only Son, who is at the Father’s side, he has made him known.”
This is the same thing
he is showing that what he is going to do is to be new
he has fulfilled the old
and with new lets look at the wine
John 2:9–10 “When the master of the feast tasted the water now become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew), the master of the feast called the bridegroom and said to him, “Everyone serves the good wine first, and when people have drunk freely, then the poor wine. But you have kept the good wine until now.””
Ok this is pretty simple
the guys just saying hey why did you wait to give me the good stuff
but here is what John is seeking to tell us
That Chirst is like this new wine
so much better than anything else
while the OT was a grace Jesus is better
which leads us to the main point tonight

main point: Jesus is fulfilment of the Old Testament and better than anything else

In this section of John we have seen that Jesus first mircle is meant to have us beilve who he says he is, but it also teaches us that Jesus is the fulfillment of the OT, s seen in the filling of the jars with wine, and he is also seen as being better than the grace in the OT
Here is the the thing guys, you can search and seacrch the world
for somthing that will fill you
but what you will find is that all of things, religions, jobs, any thing
is going to keep asking of you, do more of this do more of that
then if you do the list of to dos you will be “a good person”
but you never get there it keeps going and going
But what we see here is Jesus fulfills God’s commands for rightounes
and meaning he is better than anything else
he fulfill righounes that we could never, that deep longing in the human soul
he did the work
so don’t look any more be filled with Christ, and the work he did for us

take aways

Know that miracles are signs that point us to Christ
2. Renew your desires, so you know Jesus is better than anything else
Tonight we saw that miracle are good thins in them selfs
but they have a greater purpose, they are ment to give us confidence, and to point us to Christ
so don’t miss the sign for the thing it is point to
and if you are waiting for Christ to work in your life but it does not seem to be happening
don’t loose heart because you still have accses to the greater thing christ him self
Also let’s review are desires do that how we feel matches the truth we know about Chirst, he is better than anything, like the new wine
i think you would all agree that the scirptures make it clear that Jesus is better than anything the world can offer, pretty easy metnally to get that idea
but are emotions can be slow to follow this reality
but now is the best time to start, it may take a long time for this truth to become consistant
but be disciplned read scipture take time in prayer,
and i promise when you over a long period of time your emotions will follow what you already know
that Jesus is better than anything else

BE filled

Tonight we saw that Jesus fullfills the OT and is better than it, grace upon grace
He does this so you can be filled
Jesus wants you to know him in this way
so take heart if somethings your emotions are slow to follow the truth you know in your head
that Jesus is better fulfillment of the Ot
he wants you to be filled with desire for him
if you seek to love him more, he will soften your heart
He wants you to come to him
so i want to end on a verse from Matthew 11:28–30 “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.””
He will give you rest, he will give you the desire to love him more
to know he is better than anything the world can offer, you have to come to him
let’s pray
