Seeing the Unseen: The Miracle of Blind Bartimaeus
Bible Passage: Mark 10:46-52
Bible Passage: Mark 10:46-52
1. Jesus Meets Us
1. Jesus Meets Us
Mark 10:46 “And they came to Jericho. And as he was leaving Jericho with his disciples and a great crowd, Bartimaeus, a blind beggar, the son of Timaeus, was sitting by the roadside.”
The first thing to see here is the importance of where bartimeaus was at this point.
If you notice it says “as they were leaving Jericho” meaning that there is a road in between the new and old Jericho. This is a road well travelled.
It would be the perfect place to beg for money because he was an outcast
Blind people or people with physical disabilities back then werent even considered humans
Society looked down at them just because they were different.
Just where he was at this time shows us that bartaemus was a outcast
2. Cry Out Continually
2. Cry Out Continually
Mark 10:47–48 “And when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out and say, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” And many rebuked him, telling him to be silent. But he cried out all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!””
This is not the kind of cry you would do for money, this is not the kind of cry you would do just for someone to come and give you something, this was an intimate cry for the savior.
He calls him the “son of david” using an old testament name for him. This is intimate.
Then here we see the crowd following Jesus step in.
They tell him to hold his peace, this means be quiet!
The people who are following Jesus or CLAIMING to following Jesus, sees someone with a need and when they call out to him They tell him to shut up!
Are you serious? Followers of Jesus christ that tell someone to shut up when they call out for Jesus, That is the exact opposite of what Jesus has called us to do!
There are people around you EVERY SINGLE DAY that are calling out to christ, not litteraly saying Lord have mercy on me, but by the way they live their lives, they are calling out to him.
MAYBE thats you!
You are searching for a worldy pleasure to fill that God sized hole in your heart. Because I know I was doing the same thing when I was your age.
Sex, weed, Nicotine, Drinking, Porn, a sinful relationship, sending people stuff you shouldnt be sending on snap.
maybe its you, or maybe its your best friend, or someone you sit next to in class.
They might not say it but just from them living that live or you living that life, they are calling out for christ.
Then even after the crowds demands for him to be quiet and hold his peace, in his peril tone, he cries out all the more, “son of david, have mercy on me”
Thank God he didnt listen to people who were trying to silence him. Thank the lord he only had his eyes on Jesus and not what the people of this world were telling him to do.
Everyday this world gets more demonic and demonic, if you listen to the world its only going to lead to death.
He has a sincere call to Jesus
He calls out to Jesus again and then that time Jesus finally heard him over the crowd and people on that road, lets read verse 49
3. Leap into Light
3. Leap into Light
Mark 10:49–50 “And Jesus stopped and said, “Call him.” And they called the blind man, saying to him, “Take heart. Get up; he is calling you.” And throwing off his cloak, he sprang up and came to Jesus.”
Last week I mentioned simon peter and andrew fishing in mark 1, what happened?
They Immediately dropped their nets and went to Jesus,
Bartimaeus heard that Jesus called his name and he casted off his cloak and ran to Jesus,
Someone tell me what that cloak couldve ment to him.
Maybe something that kept him warm at night, maybe a keepsake that someone gave him, maybe one of the only things to his name
Yet when Jesus calls him he forgets about it,
This is pointing towards your lives or your friends lives, when we run to Jesus we leave behind our past burdens, we may even leave comfort in sin for unconfortable righteousness.
4. Faith Brings Fullness
4. Faith Brings Fullness
Mark 10:51–52 “And Jesus said to him, “What do you want me to do for you?” And the blind man said to him, “Rabbi, let me recover my sight.” And Jesus said to him, “Go your way; your faith has made you well.” And immediately he recovered his sight and followed him on the way.”
I want you guys who dont know if youre saved or think you might be saved or just know youre not saved to listen to me right here.
Jesus sought out the outcast when everyone was against it. If you arent saved, listen to me, Jesus saves the outcast
But with todays society, I dont want to fit in, I want to be an outcast, I want the non belivers and people of this world to look at me differently.
Listen to me, Jesus seeks you out, regardless of physical state, regardless of what others think of you
Jesus can and will seek you out, you just have to have faith and be genuine about it, not for show, not to try to get attention, but pure true faith,
Closing
