The Deity of the Holy Spirit
Focus
The Holy Spirit is fully God. Scripture reveals His deity through His identification with God, His divine attributes, and His association with Yahweh Himself.
I. The Holy Spirit Is Called God
Acts 5:3-4
Text: Peter tells Ananias that he has lied to the Holy Spirit and then declares that he has lied to God.
Truth:
Lying to the Holy Spirit is equated with lying to God.
Peter makes no distinction between an offense against the Holy Spirit and an offense against God.
The Holy Spirit possesses divine authority and identity.
Key Statement:
The Holy Spirit is not merely God's power or influence; He is God.
II. The Holy Spirit Possesses Divine Attributes
Psalm 139:7-8
Text: David asks, "Where shall I go from your Spirit?" and concludes there is nowhere he can escape God's Spirit.
II. The Holy Spirit Possesses Divine Attributes
Omnipresence
Psalm 139:7-8
David asks:
"Where shall I go from your Spirit?"
No one can escape the Spirit's presence, a characteristic belonging only to God.
Omniscience
1 Corinthians 2:10-11
The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. He possesses complete knowledge of God's thoughts.
Eternity
Hebrews 9:14
The Spirit is called the "eternal Spirit."
Omnipotence
Luke 1:35
The miraculous conception of Christ was accomplished through the power of the Holy Spirit.
Truth:
The Spirit is present in heaven and in Sheol.
The Spirit's presence extends everywhere.
Omnipresence is an attribute belonging only to God.
Key Statement:
The Holy Spirit possesses the divine attribute of omnipresence.
III. The Holy Spirit Is Identified with Yahweh
Jeremiah 31:31-34 and Hebrews 10:15-17
Text:
In Jeremiah, Yahweh speaks the promises of the New Covenant.
In Hebrews, those same words are introduced as the testimony of the Holy Spirit.
Truth:
Jeremiah identifies the speaker as Yahweh.
Hebrews identifies the speaker as the Holy Spirit.
The New Testament attributes Yahweh's words directly to the Holy Spirit.
Key Statement:
What Yahweh says in Jeremiah, the Holy Spirit says in Hebrews. The Holy Spirit therefore shares the divine identity of Yahweh.
Conclusion
The deity of the Holy Spirit is clearly demonstrated in Scripture:
He is called God (Acts 5:3-4).
He possesses God's attributes (Psalm 139:7-8).
He is identified with Yahweh (Jeremiah 31:31-34; Hebrews 10:15-17).
Main Lesson
The Holy Spirit is fully and truly God, worthy of the same honor, worship, and reverence as the Father and the Son.
As we have seen, the biblical evidence is clear. Peter identified the Holy Spirit as God in Acts 5:3-4. David described the Spirit's omnipresence in Psalm 139:7-8. The writer of Hebrews attributed the very words of Yahweh in Jeremiah 31 to the Holy Spirit, identifying Him with the Lord Himself.
Therefore, the Holy Spirit is not merely a divine power or influence. He is God, possessing God's attributes, speaking God's words, and sharing God's identity. Because He is God, He deserves our faith, our obedience, our worship, and our reverence.
The question is not simply whether we believe in the Holy Spirit, but whether we recognize Him for who He truly is: the eternal God who dwells with His people and works among them today.
