Attitude Adjustment:
(NIV)
3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves,
(ESV)
3 Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves.
(ESV)
5 And do you seek great things for yourself? Seek them not, for behold, I am bringing disaster upon all flesh, declares the Lord. But I will give you your life as a prize of war in all places to which you may go.”
Oswald Chambers:
“ Are you seeking great things for yourself? Not seeking to be a great one, but seeking great things from God for yourself.
Are you seeking great things for yourself? Not seeking to be a great one, but seeking great things from God for yourself. God wants you in a closer relationship to Himself than receiving His gifts, He wants you to get to know Him. A great thing is accidental, it comes and goes. God never gives us anything accidental. Nothing is easier than getting into a right relationship with God except when it is not God Whom you want but only what He gives.
Starts with personal evaluation
Examine our motivation
There is not a more significant characteristic for this ministry
My initial observatioins when I went to OCCA was that there was something unique about the leaders of RZIM. Everyone of then exhibited a real humility that I had not observed in many other organizations. Especially considering the professional expertise and level that each person had reached in their particular area of expertise. These were men and women who were at the top of their game and yet lived their lives with incredible humility. This is one of the characteristics of Ravi that most people first mention when I talk with them .
2. Perspective Adjustment
(ESV)
4 Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.
Never an issue about being concerned about our own interests
We make decisions primarily after evaluating what is best for us or personal preferences
Examine why we say yes or no to any request on our personal time.
How willing are we to change our personal schedule or agenda to accommodate someone else’s needs?
Is Paul saying that there is equality between our interest and others interests?
Lets look at the model of Jesus:
Vs 6-7: “who, though he was in the form of God did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped but emptied himself by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men”
He didn’t come as God he came as a man: I don’t know if we can grasp how much humility that took. He didn’t consider his interest and our interests as equal.
Vs 8: “And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death even the death on a cross”
He willing put our interests ahead his
(ESV)
5 Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”
Peter challenges us to clothe ourselves with humility.
3: Unity Adjustment
(ESV)
Christ’s Example of Humility
2 So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, 2 complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind.
Paul’s purpose was to bring unity to the Philippians.
Conclusion:
Without a spirit of humility we will never know true unity. Unity is not everyone thinking the same way, it is a spirit that means we are all striving to reach the same goal.
5 Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”
This should be a core value for RZIM Canada. I think we have some room to grow.
English Standard Version Chapter 45
5 And do you seek great things for yourself?
