Handout
Jesus Christ is the master teacher. No one handled people the way He did. He spoke with perfect wisdom, perfect timing, perfect compassion, and perfect authority. Whether he dealt with Jews who had the scriptures or Gentiles who had no covenant, whether he spoke to people eager to learn or those who resisted truth, Jesus always responded in a way that revealed the heart of God.
This series matters because how Jesus handled people teaches us how we should handle people - in ministry, in leadership, in family, and in everyday life. Jesus never treated everyone the same. He met each person at their level of understanding, their spiritual condition, their motives, and their response to truth. Learning His methods helps us grow in wisdom, discernment, and Christlike character.
In this lesson we are going to look at how Jesus handled people according to their spiritual condition.
Jesus responded to people based on the condition of their heart. Some approached him with humility and teachability, others with brokenness, and others with curiosity mixed with uncertainty. Jesus met each one exactly where they were.

Body:

1. The Centurion — Matthew 8:5-13

A Roman centurion approached Jesus in Capernaum asking him to heal his servant. When Jesus offered to come to his house, the centurion humbly said he was not worthy for Jesus to enter, and declared that Christ’s authority was so great that a single spoken word would heal the servant. Jesus praised his extraordinary faith - greater than any he found in Israel - and healed the servant instantly.
The Centurion fits this category because he confessed his unworthiness and demonstrated complete trust in Jesus authority.
Matthew 8:8–9 NKJV
8 The centurion answered and said, “Lord, I am not worthy that You should come under my roof. But only speak a word, and my servant will be healed. 9 For I also am a man under authority, having soldiers under me. And I say to this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes; and to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.”

i. Jesus’ Answer to the Centurion’s Humility and Trust.

Jesus publicly praised his faith and granted the healing he requested.
Matthew 8:10 NKJV
10 When Jesus heard it, He marveled, and said to those who followed, “Assuredly, I say to you, I have not found such great faith, not even in Israel!

2. Mary of Bethany — Luke 10:39

When Jesus visited the home of Martha and Mary, Mary chose to sit at his feet and listen to his teaching while Martha was distracted with serving. Martha complained that Mary was not helping, but Jesus gently corrected her, explaining that Mary had chosen the “one thing” that mattered most — hearing his word — and that her choice would not be taken from her.
Mary fits this category because she was willing to sit at Jesus feet to hear his word, showing a heart eager to learn.
Luke 10:39 NKJV
39 And she had a sister called Mary, who also sat at Jesus’ feet and heard His word.

i. Jesus’ Answer to Mary’s Teachability

Jesus defended her choice and declared her devotion “the good part.”
Luke 10:42 NKJV
42 But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.”

3. Woman with the Issue of Blood — Mark 5:27-28

A woman suffering twelve years from a bleeding condition pushed through a crowd to reach Jesus, Believing that touching his garment would heal her. When she touched him, she immediately healed, and Jesus stopped to ask who had touched him. Trembling, she came forward and told the truth, and Jesus comforted her, calling her “daughter,” affirming her faith, and confirming her healing.
This woman fits this category because she approached Jesus in faith, believing He alone could heal her.
Mark 5:27–28 NKJV
27 When she heard about Jesus, she came behind Him in the crowd and touched His garment. 28 For she said, “If only I may touch His clothes, I shall be made well.”

i. Jesus’ Answer to the Woman’s Faith.

Jesus honored her faith, healed her, and called her “daughter.”
Mark 5:34 NKJV
34 And He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well. Go in peace, and be healed of your affliction.”

4. How These Truths Apply to us Today

A. Like the centurion, we must approach Jesus with humility and trust.

When we confess our unworthiness and trust His authority, Jesus honors that humility. He still answers prayers offered in sincere faith, and He still works in the lives of those who rely on His Word.

B. Like Mary of Bethany, we must choose to sit at Jesus’ feet.

In a world full of distractions, Jesus still honors those who prioritize His Word. When we choose devotion over busyness, jesus gives us understanding, strength, and spiritual clarity.

C. Like the woman with the issue of blood, we must come to Jesus believing He alone can meet our deepest needs.

Jesus still responds to those who reach out in faith. When we come to Him with our pain, our weakness, and our desperation, he gives healing, comfort, and assurance.

D. As Christians, we must handle people the way Jesus did.

We honor the humble, just as Jesus honored the Centurion.
We encourage the teachable, just as Jesus encouraged Mary.
We show compassion to the hurting, just as Jesus comforted the suffering woman.

E. Ministry becomes Christ-like when we respond to people according to their spiritual condition.

Not everyone needs the same approach. Jesus teaches us to meet people where they are, to discern their heart, and to respond with wisdom, compassion, and truth.

Conclusion:

Jesus handled people according to their spiritual condition, and the stories of the Centurion, Mary of Bethany, and the woman with the issue of blood show this clearly. The Centurion came with humility and fear, and Jesus honored him with praise and answered his request immediately. Mary came with a teachable spirit, sitting at Jesus’s feet, and Jesus defended her choice and affirmed that she had chosen the “good part.” The woman with the issue of blood came quietly, believing Jesus alone could help her, and Jesus healed her, comforted her, and called her “daughter.”
These three examples show that Jesus always responds to humility, always honors teachability, and always meets sincere faith with compassion and power. Whether someone is a respected leader like the Centurion, a Devoted disciple like Mary, or a suffering outcast like the woman with the issue of blood, Jesus sees the heart and responds accordingly. This is the wisdom we must learn as his followers.
Be humble like the Centurion,
Be teachable Mary,
And understand like the woman with the issue of blood that only Jesus can help.
