All preaching must find its content and truth from the Bible, the Word of God. 2 Timothy 3:16–17 “All Scripture is God-breathed and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be equipped, having been thoroughly equipped for every good work.” The Word of God is sufficient for equipping each and every human for godliness, bring one’s life back in alignment with what they were designed and created for. No other book, document, or source is sufficient to do that. Therefore, 2 Timothy 4:2 “preach the word.” This word is perfect because as 2 Peter 1:21 “For no prophecy was ever made by the will of man, but men being moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.” The Bible carries with it the authority of its author God, when the Bible is read, or truth is accurately derived from it, then God is speaking. Therefore, the content of one’s preaching must be the Word of God.
Form of Preaching
Form of Preaching
In light of the previous, sermon should follow the structure, substance, and spirit of the biblical text being preached. The structure should imitate the structure of the passage, trusting the Holy Spirit had superintended the writing in this way for a reason. The substance should be derived and thus in the preaching should be demonstrated to have derived from the text because the proposition is only valuable in so far as it reflect what the Word of God says. And the delivery should imitate the spirit of the text so that the audience can understand the tone, emotion, and heart behind the text.
Text-Driven so Spirit will move.
Text-Driven so Spirit will move.
This form of preaching is driven completely and entirely by the text because the Holy Spirit works through the Word. Faith comes from hearing (implied understanding) the Word. Therefore, preaching must be word-centered.
Christocentric/Theocentric
Christocentric/Theocentric
While the substance of preaching may differ depending on the text, preaching is always theocentric and christocentric.
