False Security (in what do we say Yes to that we believe will bring us security?)
For this man…it was riches.
He wanted the result…but not the process [different word???]
We want to look good, but not diet.
We want to be fit, but not work out.
We want to gain knowledge, but not study or read
As ??? says, everyone wants to go to heaven, but no one wants to die.
This man wanted etneral life.
We want to follow Jesus, but on our on terms.
We define Jesus in terms that are acceptable to our current life.
We want to be transformed, but we don’t want to change.
Saying YES to God means being open to transformation (Saying yes is scary…how will it turn out....).
God leads us to places of blessing…the man couldn’t envision life without his wealth.
He couldn’t envision God fulfilling all of his needs (Eph 3:20)
Scriptures:
Referenced as a man and young man who had great possessions.
man who had great possessions.
Jesus…looking at him…loved him.
Mark doesn’t tell us that the man was a ruler…or young…but includes the part that Jesus looked at him and “loved” him.
How do we feel when someone makes a foolish choice…we want to ‘honor’ their decision…but we feel regret for them because we love them and know there are better choices.
Ruler…extremely rich.
Jesus touched on the one thing the man couldn’t say no to.
Question: Not what are you willing to die for…but what are you willing to live for?
(Remember, this will be communion Sunday and also the 4th of July is coming).
Jesus chose to die for us…actually, he chose to die to be obedient to God.
The man wanted to know what he needed to do…to inherit…in the end it was to follow Jesus…but he couldn’t say Yes to Jesus…and Yes to his riches.
Mark 10:
Look up grieving.
Look up love.
In fact, this verse has been described as the saddest in the Bible.
