like Paul writing his prison epistles. John here is doing the same thing
he is in exile on the Isle of Papmos
this is a baron rock that is a mine where prisoners will go and work
this Isle is off the mainland of modern day Turkey
At this time in history John is the only one left of the apostles
he is probably the most important man in Christianity alive
yet he calls himself a brother
a fellow partaker in tribulation
the persecution of the church is the norm
he does not see himself as being superior to any fellow believer
in this verse and the next we are still in the greeting of the book
the visions do not start until V 12
He has given a greeting from the trinity
now he is giving a greeting from himself
fellow partaker in tribulation and Kingdom
we persevere because we are in Jesus
The Holy Spirit causes us to persevere we cannot lose our salvation because of circumstances
because of sin, because of persecutions or anything else can separate us from the love of God
John is being persecuted because of his witness of Jesus
V 10
In the Spirit - the Holy Spirit has taken John physically into Heaven or by a vision
John is standing there and he hears a very loud voice behind him telling him to write
so, John is going to see visions. things spectacular things he never knew existed
and he is told to write what he sees
he uses the word LIKE because he is describing something that he has never seen
he does not have time to think about what he is looking at or process it
he hears a voice behind him giving him instructions

seven lampstands are the seven churches V 20
the church is the light of the world
The light is Jesus
as the Head of the Church Jesus is the center
Symbolism
Symbolism
there is a lot of symbolism in Revelation
Here we have a vision of Jesus that John saw
Just like the lampstands, the lights. these symbols are explained in God’s word
The Father is not going to give us a book to read and study but make it so that we could never understand it
so in the next set of verses we have Jesus but He is full of symbols
these are descriptions of who Jesus is
Symbols of who and what King Jesus is
remember we have seen John as the one who Jesus loved
we have seen John walking and talking with the Man Jesus
but now John turns and sees Jesus in all His glory and what does he do V 17
lets look at the description that John has
Son of man
Robe to His feet
Golden sash
Hair white like wool
eyes flame of fire
feet like burnished bronze
Voice like many waters
right hand stars
Mouth has a two edge sword
face shining as the sun
V 13
Like the son of man
Jesus referred himself as the son of man in many gospel passages
John is seeing Jesus here in a totally new way
a way we need to relate to Jesus more
The robe
the character of a person
we were clothed in filthy rags
Adam and Eve were clothed in a fig leaf to hide their shame
but Jesus here
Bless Yahweh, O my soul! O Yahweh my God, You are very great; You are clothed with splendor and majesty,
Wrapping Yourself with light as with a cloak, Stretching out the heavens like a tent curtain.
here its referring to the High priestly robe of Jesus our High priest who is before the throne of the Father to make intersession for us day and night
when King Jesus returns He will have on a robe dipped in blood because He is coming to make war
and being clothed with a garment dipped in blood, His name is also called The Word of God.
Golden Sash
this represents righteousness
Also righteousness will be the belt about His loins, And faithfulness the belt about His waist.
John wants us to be sure we are speaking of Jehovah God
the risen Christ who is God
the next description is the Hair of white
V 14
where have we seen this before
“I kept looking Until thrones were set up, And the Ancient of Days was seated; His clothing was like white snow And the hair of His head like pure wool. His throne was ablaze with fire, Its wheels were a burning fire.
here is a description of God the Father
now Jesus has this same description because Jesus is the Son of man. he is also God the Son
Eyes of fire and feet of Bronze
represent Judgement
Your eyes are too pure to see evil, And You cannot look on trouble.
And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are uncovered and laid bare to the eyes of Him to whom we have an account to give.
the eyes of God are everywhere. there is nothing hidden from Him
our works will be tried in fire to see if any will be refined or burned up
each man’s work will become evident, for the day will indicate it because it is revealed with fire, and the fire itself will test the quality of each man’s work.
Feet of Bronze
also represents judgement brass is the material of the altar where the burnt offerings were made
“But who can endure the day of His coming? And who can stand when He appears? For He is like a smelter’s fire
the bronze of the smelters fire will refine or burn up the impurities
Voice of many waters
I also heard the sound of their wings like the sound of many waters as they went, like the sound of the Almighty, a sound of tumult like the sound of an army camp; whenever they stood still, they dropped their wings.
and behold, the glory of the God of Israel was coming from the way of the east. And His voice was like the sound of many waters; and the earth shone with His glory.
The Glory of God the Father is the same way Jesus sounds because Jesus is God
we will come back to the seven stars
The two edge sword
is the word of God
For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
Jesus will come to Judge the world
But with righteousness He will judge the poor, And decide with uprightness for the afflicted of the earth; And He will strike the earth with the rod of His mouth, And with the breath of His lips He will put the wicked to death.
His word will defeat the armies of the nations
Then I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse, and He who sits on it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and wages war.
His eyes are a flame of fire, and on His head are many diadems; having a name written on Him which no one knows except Himself,
and being clothed with a garment dipped in blood, His name is also called The Word of God.
And the armies which are in heaven, clothed in fine linen, white and clean, were following Him on white horses.
And from His mouth comes a sharp sword, so that with it He may strike down the nations, and He will rule them with a rod of iron; and He treads the wine press of the wrath of the rage of God, the Almighty.
And He has on His garment and on His thigh a name written, “KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.”
we will continue next time with this vision and the symbols represented here in Revelation
looking at the apocalypse of Jesus that the Father wants us to know
