Introduction

Luke writing to Theophilus
In those days
Days of Caesar Augustus (Gaius Octavius)
Julius Caesar was great uncle
Wanted to end republic
Assassinated in 44 BC by Brutus and Cassius
Adopts Octavius in will
Mark Antony and Octavius team up and defeat Brutus and Cassius
Mark Antony teams up with Cleopatra and is defeated in 31 BC.
January of 27 BC, Octavius becomes emperor.
Augustus means “revered”
Not military leader but wants to bring peace.
Pax Romana
This is man’s attempt to bring peace and order.
Days of Miracles
More important
400 years of silence broken
Angels appearing to people
Mary and Elizabeth rejoicing
Two miraculous births anounced
Zecharias made mute
Zecharias made whole at birth of John.
Zecharias prophesies.
What is important to man is often not important to God.
What isn’t important to man is often important to God.

The Decree

Luke 2:1–3 ESV
In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered. This was the first registration when Quirinius was governor of Syria. And all went to be registered, each to his own town.
Caesar Augustus wanting to bring peace and order (and taxation) issues decree.
Who: All the world.
From Portugal, to Germany, to Ethiopia, to Syria
What: First census.
Where: Everyone back to hometown of family.

The Journey

Luke 2:4–5 ESV
And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the town of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, to be registered with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child.

The Birth

Luke 2:6–7 ESV
And while they were there, the time came for her to give birth. And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.
The World’s View
Fiancee on a donkey
Traveling over 70 miles
Forced to because of census to take your money.
Have to go to a barn.
Finally born and placed in feeding trough.
Heaven’s View
Miraculous conception
King’s moved
Prophesies fulfilled
People obeying in faith.
God taking on human flesh for all eternity.
All the glory to Him.

Conclusion

God doesn’t see as we see.
The glory of man is not the glory of God and vice versa.
Pay attention to the little things.
Obey God in every little thing.
