Message of the Cross

1 Corinthians
1 Corinthians 1:18 NIV84
For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.

To those who are perishing the preaching of the cross is foolishness.

To those who are being saved the cross is the power of God.

God made the wisdom of the world foolishness.

1 Corinthians 1:20-
1 Corinthians 1:20–21 NIV84
Where is the wise man? Where is the scholar? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe.

NO wise man, no scholar, no philosopher of this age is wise.

Man’s wisdom does not point man to God.

So God uses the foolishness to present His salvation.

How do people miss the simplicity of the Gospel?

1 Corinthians 1:22-
1 Corinthians 1:22–25 NIV84
Jews demand miraculous signs and Greeks look for wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. For the foolishness of God is wiser than man’s wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than man’s strength.

The Jews want “miraculous signs.”

The Greeks look for “wisdom.”

But Christ is:

A stumbling block to the Jews.

And foolishness to the Gentiles.

To those God has called

Christ is the power of God.

Christ is the wisdom of God.

God’s foolishness is wiser than man’s wisdom.

God’s weakness is stronger than man’s strength!

It’s all about God!

1 Corinthians 1:26 NIV84
Brothers, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth.
1 Corinthians 1:26-

What were you when you were called?

What were you when you were called?

Most of us were not wise (by human standards).

Most of us were not influential.

Most of us were not noble by birth.

1 Corinthians 1:27-
1 Corinthians 1:27–29 NIV84
But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. He chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not—to nullify the things that are, so that no one may boast before him.

God chose the foolish things to shame the wise.

God chose the weak things to shame the strong.

God chose the lowly things—despised things—to discount things

All of this is so no one can boast.

1 Corinthians
1 Corinthians 1:30 NIV84
It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God—that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption.
1 Corinthians 1:30 NIV84
It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God—that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption.
1 Corinthians 1:30

It really is all about God.

Jesus is our wisdom.

Jesus is our righteousness.

Jesus is our holiness.

And Jesus is our redemption.

SO WHAT?

So What Does This Mean To Us?

1 Corinthians 1:31 NIV84
Therefore, as it is written: “Let him who boasts boast in the Lord.”
It’s all about God! The world around us believes they are wise. They believe they are strong. But compared to God the are foolish and weak!
Yet, we end up chasing after the wisdom and strength of this world.
No if we are going to boast—we need to boast in the Lord! And if we boast in the Lord then we must serve the Lord. That’s why God commands us to:
Love the Lord
Matthew 22:37 NIV84
Jesus replied: “ ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’
Love the Lord your God with the totality of your being!
