Holy Spirit

John 16:5–11 NIV
but now I am going to him who sent me. None of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ Rather, you are filled with grief because I have said these things. But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: about sin, because people do not believe in me; about righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer; and about judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned.
John 13:
John 13:36 NIV
Simon Peter asked him, “Lord, where are you going?” Jesus replied, “Where I am going, you cannot follow now, but you will follow later.”
John 14:5 NIV
Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?”
John 14:
John 14:16 NIV
And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever—
John 14:26 NIV
But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.
John 15:26 NIV
“When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father—the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father—he will testify about me.
John 7:39 NIV
By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.
About righteousness:
Acts 3:14 NIV
You disowned the Holy and Righteous One and asked that a murderer be released to you.
Ac 7:
Acts 7:32 NIV
‘I am the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.’ Moses trembled with fear and did not dare to look.
Acts 7:
Acts 7:52 NIV
Was there ever a prophet your ancestors did not persecute? They even killed those who predicted the coming of the Righteous One. And now you have betrayed and murdered him—
Romans 3:21–22 NIV
But now apart from the law the righteousness of God has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. This righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference between Jew and Gentile,
1 Peter 3:18 NIV
For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive in the Spirit.
Sin
John 15:22 NIV
If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not be guilty of sin; but now they have no excuse for their sin.
John 12:31 NIV
Now is the time for judgment on this world; now the prince of this world will be driven out.
The prince of this World
John 1
John 13:21 NIV
After he had said this, Jesus was troubled in spirit and testified, “Very truly I tell you, one of you is going to betray me.”
John 12:31 NIV
Now is the time for judgment on this world; now the prince of this world will be driven out.

V 5-6 — Jesus wanted to comfort the disciples because he is going to go away.
V. 7 - Comforter - a helper in court.
The work of the Holy Spirit is the foreign work of the gospel.
The work of the Holy Spirit is to convict of people - To demonstrate by proof or evidence; to prove.
Convict and convince — Root - to conquer.
The work of the holy Spirit — work, the life and the success of the mission.
misunderstanding 1. Pentecostalists and charismatics who confuse the work of the Holy Spirit with mysticism, emotionalism and vague spiritual sentimentality. On the other hand there are the Christians who are apathetic about the practical influence of the Holy Spirit in their lives.
It is the Holy Spirit who works faith, using the word of God preached by me. This comforting truth can be illustrated by the example of the father who leaves his family behind so he can come back with the daily bread that will keep them alive.
Another illustration would be soldier who volunteers to leave his comrades, besieged by an overwhelming enemy force in order to bring back help. he takes a tearful farewell of his comrades so that at the risk of his life he may penetrated enemy lines and return with rescuers. Jesus left his disciples so that he might send the Holy Spirit. The abiding presence of the Spirit is worth more than the visible presence of Jesus.
The text offers opportunity to strengthen and encourage Christians in the ministry the Lord has placed in to their hands. He has provided a powerful Helper.
A. He convinces people about sin v. 8-9
B. He convinces people about righteousness v. 10
C. He convinces people about judgment v. 11

1 Corinthians 2:14 Page 425

The natural man may be educated and intellectually sharp, but he cannot receive the wisdom of the Spirit as well as a less knowledgeable, but faith-oriented believer.

1 Corinthians 2:14 Page 426

In the same way, the natural man may have a far superior head on his shoulders and lots of book learning, but until he gets on line with the Holy Spirit by coming to Christ through faith, he can never receive what even the most ignorant believer receives all the time.1551

Theme: How the Holy Spirit Helps Us
A. He convinces people about sin v. 8-9
B. He convinces people about righteousness v. 10
C. He convinces people about judgment v. 11
“Convict the world of its sin and calling it to repentance. 2. Revealing the stand of God’s righteousness to anyone who believers because Christ would no longer be physically present on earth and 3. Demonstrating Christ’s judgment over Satan.
The three goal of the Holy Spirit: Convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment.
Sin because man do not believe
Luke 15:18 NIV
I will set out and go back to my father and say to him: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you.
1 Timothy 5:22 NIV
Do not be hasty in the laying on of hands, and do not share in the sins of others. Keep yourself pure.
righteousness because I am going to the Father
Matthew 5:10 NIV
Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Judgment because the prince of this world now stands condemned
James 5:12 NIV
Above all, my brothers and sisters, do not swear—not by heaven or by earth or by anything else. All you need to say is a simple “Yes” or “No.” Otherwise you will be condemned.
James 5:2 NIV
Your wealth has rotted, and moths have eaten your clothes.
2 Peter 2:3 NIV
In their greed these teachers will exploit you with fabricated stories. Their condemnation has long been hanging over them, and their destruction has not been sleeping.
John 7:51 NIV
“Does our law condemn a man without first hearing him to find out what he has been doing?”
John 7:51
