Introduction

Matthew 9:9–13 HCSB
As Jesus went on from there, He saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax office, and He said to him, “Follow Me!” So he got up and followed Him. While He was reclining at the table in the house, many tax collectors and sinners came as guests to eat with Jesus and His disciples. When the Pharisees saw this, they asked His disciples, “Why does your Teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?” But when He heard this, He said, “Those who are well don’t need a doctor, but the sick do. Go and learn what this means: I desire mercy and not sacrifice. For I didn’t come to call the righteous, but sinners.”
The Difference between called and commissioned

All of are called and Commissioned

Matthew 28:19–20 HCSB
Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
Matthew

Jesus Commissioned Them

Matthew 10:1 HCSB
Summoning His 12 disciples, He gave them authority over unclean spirits, to drive them out and to heal every disease and sickness.
Matthew 10
Matthew 10:1–4 HCSB
Summoning His 12 disciples, He gave them authority over unclean spirits, to drive them out and to heal every disease and sickness. These are the names of the 12 apostles: First, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother; Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; Simon the Zealot, and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed Him.
Then Matthew lists the guys to do it.
Matthew 10:

To commission means to give specific Authority & Message

The Disciples were not called to BE JESUS. He bought them together and gave them specific authority to accomplish a series of tasks he deemed for them to do with a specific scope and design.

They were charged to Demonstrate Love.

We Are First Called To Follow

Describe the concept of a commissioning. It’s different than a calling. We are all called.

Called, Commissioned, Calibrated, Cognative

As with the others.
Matthew 4:18–22 HCSB
As He was walking along the Sea of Galilee, He saw two brothers, Simon, who was called Peter, and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the sea, since they were fishermen. “Follow Me,” He told them, “and I will make you fish for people!” Immediately they left their nets and followed Him. Going on from there, He saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee, and his brother John. They were in a boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets, and He called them. Immediately they left the boat and their father and followed Him.

But we are also called to lead others to follow

As believers, we are not to just sit about and continue to learn, we are to take what knowledge we have and exercise it. We are looking to work out salvation.

This is an overview of the general teachings of Matthew. It is not inteded to be a in depth study but to instead, give the hearer an big picutre of the gospel

We Are First Called To Follow

The final words of Christ are given before he ascended to be with the Father. He is in effect telling the disciples, and all those who would follow that they have a specific assignment to carry out while awaiting his return. There is a thing that we all should be doing. There is a reality that, as the church of Jesus Christ, we are to be actively engaging the world in the way Jesus did. We are not idly waiting for Jesus to come back for us gathering around campfires singing campfire songs.
We are to be up to doing some good in His name.
HCSB
We have a picture of what that Good looks like here in as well as in the parallel gospels in and . This passage gives us a early picture of what it looks like for us to carry out that commission we see in Matthew 28
As Jesus went on from there, He saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax office, and He said to him, “Follow Me!” So he got up and followed Him. While He was reclining at the table in the house, many tax collectors and sinners came as guests to eat with Jesus and His disciples. The Difference between called and commissioned

So what does a Jesus Given Commission look like?

All of are called and Commissioned

1. Jesus Gave Them Specific Authority

Authority, Details, clarity of Expectations and a picture of the desired outcome. This is more familiarly referred to as VISION

1. Authority

Jesus Commissioned Them

The Disciples were not called to BE JESUS. He bought them together and gave them specific authority to accomplish a series of tasks he deemed for them to do with a specific scope and design.
Authority means that they had unimpeded power to act, or possess or control that which Had been designated to them.
HCSB
Summoning His 12 disciples, He gave them authority over unclean spirits, to drive them out and to heal every disease and sickness.

They were to demonstrate Compassion Toward Spiritual and Physical Barriers

To drive out the sickness and To drive out The Demons.
Then Matthew lists the guys to do it.

To commission means to give specific Authority & Message

To drive out The Demons
The Disciples were not called to BE JESUS. He bought them together and gave them specific authority to accomplish a series of tasks he deemed for them to do with a specific scope and design.

There were four specifics that he instructed them in.
Matthew 10:5–15 HCSB
Jesus sent out these 12 after giving them instructions: “Don’t take the road leading to other nations, and don’t enter any Samaritan town. Instead, go to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. As you go, announce this: ‘The kingdom of heaven has come near.’ Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those with skin diseases, drive out demons. You have received free of charge; give free of charge. Don’t take along gold, silver, or copper for your money-belts. Don’t take a traveling bag for the road, or an extra shirt, sandals, or a walking stick, for the worker is worthy of his food. “When you enter any town or village, find out who is worthy, and stay there until you leave. Greet a household when you enter it, and if the household is worthy, let your peace be on it. But if it is unworthy, let your peace return to you. If anyone will not welcome you or listen to your words, shake the dust off your feet when you leave that house or town. I assure you: It will be more tolerable on the day of judgment for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah than for that town.

They were charged to Demonstrate Love.

Specific Message

Matthew 10:6 HCSB
Instead, go to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.
Matthew 10:7–8 HCSB
As you go, announce this: ‘The kingdom of heaven has come near.’ Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those with skin diseases, drive out demons. You have received free of charge; give free of charge.
mt 10
mt 10
This was not a message of Verbal abuse. Not a sign bearing yelling of repent or the kingdom will get you kind of message. It was a message that was full of hope. declaring that God has not abandoned his children. (kingdom is near) This is demonstrated in word, compassion for the hurting, clearing of the demons (actual or emotional) and most of all. it was to be offered freely and generously just as they had been given.

Specific Attitude

Matthew 10:9–10 HCSB
Don’t take along gold, silver, or copper for your money-belts. Don’t take a traveling bag for the road, or an extra shirt, sandals, or a walking stick, for the worker is worthy of his food.
Matthew 10:8–10 HCSB

mt
Matthew 10:10 HCSB
Don’t take a traveling bag for the road, or an extra shirt, sandals, or a walking stick, for the worker is worthy of his food.
This is worth mentioning to me because it’s often confuse that we are looking at a charitable, work. Basically, we are poor looking to be advocates for the poor.
They were to walk confidently because of the authority and the nobility of the work they were doing.

Specific Method

Matthew 10:7–8 HCSB
As you go, announce this: ‘The kingdom of heaven has come near.’ Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those with skin diseases, drive out demons. You have received free of charge; give free of charge.
mt 10
Matthew 10:11–15 HCSB
“When you enter any town or village, find out who is worthy, and stay there until you leave. Greet a household when you enter it, and if the household is worthy, let your peace be on it. But if it is unworthy, let your peace return to you. If anyone will not welcome you or listen to your words, shake the dust off your feet when you leave that house or town. I assure you: It will be more tolerable on the day of judgment for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah than for that town.
Matthew 10:10–15 HCSB

mt 10 10-
This is about determining readiness to receive the gospel. The readiness of the people will be indicated in their response. We are taking a worthy message.

2. Jesus Gave them Realistic Expectations

Expect some to receive you

Matthew 10:11 HCSB
“When you enter any town or village, find out who is worthy, and stay there until you leave.
mt
It’s important to note that they were to go knowing that some would receive them. We don’t need to walk into the world thinking that no one wants to be free from sin. clearly there are people who do or we would not be left here to tell them.

Expect to be rejected by others

Matthew 10:16 HCSB
“Look, I’m sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as serpents and as harmless as doves.
Wolves are those who don’t want to be challenged. they will fight back when you disagree with them. Jesus further advises to be wise in how you approach people so you don’t find yourself careless and causing trouble because you were not careful

Expect to be attacked

Matthew 10:17 HCSB
Because people will hand you over to sanhedrins and flog you in their synagogues, beware of them.
pretty straightforward.

Expect to be intimidated

Matthew 10:26 HCSB
“Therefore, don’t be afraid of them, since there is nothing covered that won’t be uncovered and nothing hidden that won’t be made known.
Matthew 10:26–31 HCSB
“Therefore, don’t be afraid of them, since there is nothing covered that won’t be uncovered and nothing hidden that won’t be made known. What I tell you in the dark, speak in the light. What you hear in a whisper, proclaim on the housetops. Don’t fear those who kill the body but are not able to kill the soul; rather, fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. Aren’t two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them falls to the ground without your Father’s consent. But even the hairs of your head have all been counted. So don’t be afraid therefore; you are worth more than many sparrows.
mt 10 26-31

Expect to be Excited by God’s work in some

Matthew 10:32 HCSB
“Therefore, everyone who will acknowledge Me before men, I will also acknowledge him before My Father in heaven.

Expect to be grieved with others

Matthew 10:21 HCSB
“Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child. Children will even rise up against their parents and have them put to death.
mt 10
And again He says in verse 35
mt 10: 21;1035
Matthew 10:35 HCSB
For I came to turn a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law;

3. Jesus Gave them Encouragement

This means to fill with courage...

Of their immense value to Him and had nothing to fear because.

Now I know That Fear is a factor we all face. But here’s a little advice….
So they were to speak courageously and not worry themselves with people who could only kill them...
Ha, that seems odd right. But he was serious. Death is not a physical thing for them. It’s a larger thing than that.

Of the certainty of being heard

Matthew 10:18 HCSB
You will even be brought before governors and kings because of Me, to bear witness to them and to the nations.

Note the
Matthew 10:17–19 HCSB
Because people will hand you over to sanhedrins and flog you in their synagogues, beware of them. You will even be brought before governors and kings because of Me, to bear witness to them and to the nations. But when they hand you over, don’t worry about how or what you should speak. For you will be given what to say at that hour,

i. Expect to Overcome Because of The Holy Spirit

The effort they would put out would not go unrewarded. They would have an audience. And an impressive one at that.
When you are really vigilant look at the audience! Sanhedrin, governors, kings, etc. All this is evident even in a cursory reading of the book of Acts.

Of the empowerment by The Holy Spirit

Matthew 10:19–20 HCSB
But when they hand you over, don’t worry about how or what you should speak. For you will be given what to say at that hour, because you are not speaking, but the Spirit of your Father is speaking through you.
Matthew 10:19 HCSB
But when they hand you over, don’t worry about how or what you should speak. For you will be given what to say at that hour,
mt

Of His Return

I wanted to say of an active ministry but the key here is this.
Matthew 10:23 HCSB
When they persecute you in one town, escape to another. For I assure you: You will not have covered the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes.
mt
Jesus Gave the Disciples Specific Authority, He gave them Realistic Expectations, He Gave them Encouragment for the Task and He Gave them a Compelling VIsion

4. Jesus Gave them a Compelling Vision

So what is that vi
Jesus paints the grand vision and desire of the Exercise.
Matthew 10:40 HCSB
“The one who welcomes you welcomes Me, and the one who welcomes Me welcomes Him who sent Me.
mt 10
The grand design and desire is the acceptance of the message.
41
Matthew 10:40–42 HCSB
“The one who welcomes you welcomes Me, and the one who welcomes Me welcomes Him who sent Me. Anyone who welcomes a prophet because he is a prophet will receive a prophet’s reward. And anyone who welcomes a righteous person because he’s righteous will receive a righteous person’s reward. And whoever gives just a cup of cold water to one of these little ones because he is a disciple —I assure you: He will never lose his reward!”
Jesus Clearly wants the people of the world to know who they are as a member of God’s family and to live the life they were created for!
Matthew 10:41–42 HCSB
Anyone who welcomes a prophet because he is a prophet will receive a prophet’s reward. And anyone who welcomes a righteous person because he’s righteous will receive a righteous person’s reward. And whoever gives just a cup of cold water to one of these little ones because he is a disciple —I assure you: He will never lose his reward!”
He then gets specific and points out three examples. The final one is simple. Pay attention to simple gestures.
h
Pay attention to simple gestures.
Pay attention to simple gestures.
Jesus is pointing out that the simple act of welcoming the little one’s (Jesus is referring to his Disciples here) is an indication of welcoming Him.
The Grand desire is to see those who are in the world that are perceptive and welcoming of the message to know the salvation that these Disciples have come to know.
To be welcomed again into the family of God and to know the life that he has given all of us.
There are people in the world that are eager to know the message. Jesus was convinced of that and he set these men to the task of finding them.

The Great Commission

We are all called to follow Jesus. Like Matthew that day. He was asked to leave the way of the tax collector and to follow the way of Jesus. Then can the day he was asked to step into the next place. To represent Jesus to the world around him. To go back to His people and make an impact on them.
We too, have that moment when we are called out of the simple life and way of thinking that we were in before and then to move into sharing a larger perspective of life with the world we are engaged in.
We have been given authority to love people and set them free from spiritual oppressions and physical barriers.
