Rooted in Worship: Living a Live That Honors God

Introduction (not a slide)

I think we have covered before that a healthy tree does more than survive, it thrives, it produces fruit and reflects the life flowing through its roots. As believers we are rooted “in Christ” by His Word and through prayer, so both of those are relationship, which naturally leads to worship.

When you hear the word worship, what is the first thing that comes to mind?

How would your view of worship change if it included every part of your life, not just what happens on Sunday?

(Transition) Many believe that worship is what happens at the beginning of service when we start singing, and ends when we take the supper, some believe it is when we have closing prayer. Jesus and Paul teach us that worship is much deeper. Worship is a way of living before God.

How about a quick illustration: In the Old Testament sacrifices such as calf’s, goats, lambs were placed on the altar and completely dedicated to God. Then in Rom12, Paul uses the image instead of a dead sacrifice to a living sacrifice, that the believers offer their life as a living sacrifice wholly pleasing to God.

The challenge of being a living sacrifice is that we can continually crawl off the altar. Stop, listen to that again, we can continually crawl off the altar, remove ourselves from being a sacrifice. Every day we choose whether we will surrender ourselves to God or live for ourselves.

True worship begins when we willingly place our lives before God and say “Lord, everything I am belongs to You.

Big Idea- Worship is the continual offering of our lives to God in response to who He is and what He has done

True worship is Focused on God (Jn4:23-24)

Quickly summarize the woman at the well story (vv.1-18) a Samaritan woman meets Jesus at unlikely place, at unlikely time for unlikely conversation and finds out He is the Messiah and asks Him about worship.

Turn with me now so to keep in context John 4:19–24 “The woman said to Him, “Sir, I perceive that You are a prophet. “Our fathers worshiped in this mountain, and you people say that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship.” Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe Me, an hour is coming when neither in this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father. “You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews. “But an hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for such people the Father seeks to be His worshipers. “God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.””

Jesus tells the Samaritan woman that worship is not primarily about location. - - - God seeks worshipers, not merely worship services.

True worship centers on God’s character, greatness and worth

Worship begins when our attention shifts from ourselves to God.

Question: Why do you think Jesus emphasized worshipers instead of places of worship?

Key Point: Worship is first about who God is, not where we are.

Worship is Offering our Entire Lives to God

Turn again with me in the bible to:

Romans 12:1–2 “Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.”

Paul bases worship solely on God’s mercy; worship is our response to God’s grace; not an attempt to earn it.

A living sacrifice means surrendering our plans, desires, resources, and future.

Worship includes our attitudes, relationships, choices and actions.

Think for a minute; What areas of life are most difficult for people to fully surrender to God?

See, a key point is this, worship is not merely something we attend; it is something we become!

Worship changes the way that we think, again look at (v.2)

The world constantly seeks to shape our thinking.

Worship involves renewing our minds through God’s truth, through God’s Word.

A transformed mind produces a transformed life.

As our minds are renewed, we become better able to discern God’s will.

Question: What are some influence in the culture that compete for our “worship” and attention?

Key point: What captures our minds will influence our worship.

Everyday worship, Everyday life

Worship happens during work, retirement, in everyday life.

Worship is reflected in how we serve others.

Worship is expressed through our obedience to Christ and His commands.

Worship includes generosity, gratitude, and faithful stewardship.

Every moment becomes an opportunity to honor God

Consider these scriptures Col3:17, 1Cor10:31 and Mt5:16. How can ordinary daily activities become acts of worship?

Key Point: Every act done for God’s glory becomes an act of worship.

Think of Colossians 3:17 “Whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to God the Father.”

Or even 1 Corinthians 10:31 “Whether, then, you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.”

Or Jesus own words Matthew 5:16 ““Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.”

Practical Worship Rhythms

Begin each day with surrender

Before starting each day, offer yourself to God in prayer. “Lord, this day belongs to You.”

Practice Daily Gratitude

Intentionally thank God for specific blessings throughout the day. Gratitude keeps the heart focused on God’s goodness.

Worship Through Obedience

Choose faithfulness in small decisions, not just major ones. Obedience is one of the clearest expressions of worship.

Engage Fully in Corporate Worship

Gather with God’s people prepared to participate rather than merely observe. Come ready to honor God and encourage others.

Reflect God’s Glory in Your Relationships

Treat others with love, grace, patience, and humility. How we treat people often reveals what we truly worship.

Identify Competing Objects of Worship

What receives the majority of your attention, affection, and devotion?

Evaluate whether anything is competing with Christ for first place

Offer one area of life to God

Such examples could be

Time, finances, relationships

Career, worries, or future plans

Renew Your mind daily

Spend time daily in scripture, allowing God’s truth to shape your thinking.

Worship beyond Sunday.

Look for opportunities to honor God throughout the week through service, generosity, and obedience.

Live for God’s glory

Ask before making major decision “Will this honor God?” Let that question guide your choices.

(Conclusion) Jesus teaches that the Father seeks worshipers who will worship in spirit and truth. Paul teaches that worship involves presenting our whole lives to God as living sacrifices. True worship goes far beyond singing songs or attending services. It is the daily response of a transformed heart that recognizes God’s worth and seeks to honor Him in every area of life.

As believers become rooted in Christ, worship ceases to be even and becomes a lifestyle.
