What Did You Learn About “Gospel”?

The English word gospel comes from Old English:
gōdspel = “good news” or “good message.”
The Greek word is euangelion
Where we get our word “evangelism”:
To share/spread the good news/message
eu = “Good”
angelia = “Announcement, news, message”

What is the Good News?

1.) The Good News is that Jesus has come to restore what sin has broken

Isaiah 61:1 NIV
1 The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners,
Luke 4:17–18 NIV
17 and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written: 18 “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free,
Matthew 11:4–5 NIV
4 Jesus replied, “Go back and report to John what you hear and see: 5 The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is proclaimed to the poor.
The good news was that the redeemer of all things was at work in the world
Why would the Gospel be especially good news for the poor?
2 Timothy 1:8–10 NIV
8 So do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord or of me his prisoner. Rather, join with me in suffering for the gospel, by the power of God. 9 He has saved us and called us to a holy life—not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace. This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time, 10 but it has now been revealed through the appearing of our Savior, Christ Jesus, who has destroyed death and has brought life and immortality to light through the gospel.
The Gospel is the good news about:
The death of death
The revealing of immortality & resurrection life
1 Corinthians 15:1–4 NASB95
1 Now I make known to you, brethren, the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received, in which also you stand, 2 by which also you are saved, if you hold fast the word which I preached to you, unless you believed in vain. 3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4 and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures,
The good news is that Jesus died, was buried, & then was raised to life
And the rest of the chapter explains how His resurrection guarantees our own
That’s the good news

2.) The Good News is that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, the King of all kings

The Gospel is often referred to as the “Gospel of the Kingdom”
Whenever you see the word “Kingdom”…
I want you to replace it in your mind with “the reign & rule of God”
Mark 1:1 NIV
1 The beginning of the good news about Jesus the Messiah, the Son of God,
We’ve already talked about how “Christ/Messiah” & “Son of God” are royal terms
The good news is that Jesus has become our anointed King
Mark 1:14–15 NIV
14 After John was put in prison, Jesus went into Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God. 15 “The time has come,” he said. “The kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news!”
The good news is that the reign & rule of God has finally come
God is now beginning to rule over the earth through Jesus, His anointed King
We respond to the Gospel by turning from a lifestyle of sin…
And believing/pledging allegiance to the King…
Living a life of love & holiness according to His royal decrees
Isaiah 52:7 NIV
7 How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news, who proclaim peace, who bring good tidings, who proclaim salvation, who say to Zion, “Your God reigns!”
The good news that the Jews were waiting for…
Was for God to reign over His people & over all the earth
When God’s reign & rule are complete…
Life is good
It’s when humanity tries to remove Him from the throne is when things get bad
Galatians 3:7–9 NIV
7 Understand, then, that those who have faith are children of Abraham. 8 Scripture foresaw that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, and announced the gospel in advance to Abraham: “All nations will be blessed through you.” 9 So those who rely on faith are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith.
The Gospel is that God will bless the whole world through Abraham’s seed
Initially, that was Israel’s role
Then Jesus came & became that King that blesses all those who pledge allegiance to Him
Then those who pledge allegiance to Him are to continue His blessings in the world by sharing the good news with others
The more people who pledge allegiance to the King & live for Him…
The more blessed the world will become
That’s good news
We’ve allowed our modern, western thinking to cause us to have a separation between religious & secular
We have our regular, secular lives
And then some of us have a small but sacred religious part of our lives
The Jews didn’t have such a separation
Their religious laws were also their secular laws
Their God-ordained royal lineage were their actual political leaders
Their prophets were political activists
Their priests were enforcers of the law
The early Christians didn’t separate religious from secular either
When they thought of Jesus as King…
They believed He had actual authority over the world
Not just over some religion
Their gatherings were more like political meetings than religious rituals
They got together
They pledged allegiance to their King
They reminded each other of the lives they’ve chosen to live
They encouraged each other to stick with it & keep up the fight
They saw themselves as an actual community of people…
Not just a gathering of people who believe some of the same religious stuff
Our categorizing of secular & religious has greatly harmed our understanding of Christianity
And it has greatly harmed our understanding of the Gospel
If only we could see the Gospel of the reign of God with a mind that is untouched by a secular vs. religious divide
Maybe we’d be less ashamed to share the good news of King Jesus

Gospel Summary:

The gospel is the good news that God, through the death, burial, resurrection, & ascension of the Lord & King Jesus Christ, is bringing salvation, establishing His reign & rule over all creation, reconciling humanity to Himself, and will ultimately restore His creation.
The Gospel is not something you do
It’s a message you respond to
We respond to that good news by:
Believing/having faith/trusting/pledging allegiance to King Jesus
Turning from a life of sin to live a new life of obedience to His righteous decrees
Dying to yourself, being buried in water, & rising to a new life as a citizen of His Kingdom
Unashamedly confessing/acknowledging Him as your King to all who ask & will listen
