Big Idea

God meets our doubt with miraculous signs, proving that He has truly appeared to His people.

I. Honest Doubt, Real Fear (Exodus 4:1)

Moses voices his fear: “What if they won’t believe me…say, ‘The LORD did not appear to you’?” (v1) – honest words revealing his anxiety.
He’s not doubting God’s call; he’s just afraid people won’t trust his word.
This isn’t rebellion, just honest fear about the mission ahead.
God hears Moses’ concern and meets him with compassion instead of anger.
Bridge: God meets Moses’ fear not with scolding, but with a miraculous sign meant to lead others to belief.

II. Staff to Snake (Exodus 4:2–4)

God asks, “What is in your hand?” (v2) – Moses answers with a simple shepherd’s staff.
At God’s command Moses throws it on the ground (v3) – and it becomes a snake before his eyes.
Terrified, Moses runs away; but God commands, “Grab it by the tail.”
When Moses obeys, the snake becomes a staff again (v4) – a dramatic picture of God turning danger into deliverance.
Bridge: This miracle isn’t just for Moses — it’s meant to make Israel believe that the LORD has truly appeared to them.

III. Signs to Believe (Exodus 4:5)

God explains: “This will take place…so that they will believe that the LORD…has appeared to you” (v5) – showing the sign’s purpose is to build faith.
He names Himself “the LORD, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob,” invoking Israel’s covenant history.
By invoking the patriarchs, God reminds Israel of His faithful promises through generations.
This sign ultimately points to Jesus — God himself coming to deliver us and keep His promises.
Bridge: This isn’t just Moses’ story — God shows up in our lives too, proving He’s still at work so we can trust Him.
