Acts 1:6–8 NLT
So when the apostles were with Jesus, they kept asking him, “Lord, has the time come for you to free Israel and restore our kingdom?” He replied, “The Father alone has the authority to set those dates and times, and they are not for you to know. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
The disciples were all concerned about when THEY were going to be the head of things
Jesus concern was the rest of the world
And providing what would be needed to accomplish it
We have been left here to do an seemingly impossible thing
To reach the world with the message of God’s love
To live a life that reflects the character of Jesus Christ
To heal the sick
To set captives free (spiritually speaking)
Free from depression
Free from addictions
Free from hopelessness
Free from
To stand with the oppressed
To feed the hungry and cloth the naked
To live in opposition to the moralities of a secular society
This is a huge job description
Far beyond any human capability
That is why Jesus said this.
But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere
Also
Luke 24:49 NLT
“And now I will send the Holy Spirit, just as my Father promised. But stay here in the city until the Holy Spirit comes and fills you with power from heaven.”
Jesus knew what he was asking of us
He also knew what would be needed to do it
The word power here is the greek word:
Dunamis
“strength, power, or ability.”
This word “power” or “dunamis” is used in the following places in scripture
Acts 10:38 NLT
And you know that God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. Then Jesus went around doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.
Luke 4:14 NLT
Then Jesus returned to Galilee, filled with the Holy Spirit’s power. Reports about him spread quickly through the whole region.
Interesting that not even Jesus could do anything until he was filled with the Holy Spirit power
Interesting that not even Jesus could do anything until he was filled with the Holy Spirit
Interesting also
The same power that allowed Jesus to do what he did…is in you and I
Scripture clearly shows that the good done for Christ does not come from us....but from God’s power
2 Corinthians 4:7 NLT
We now have this light shining in our hearts, but we ourselves are like fragile clay jars containing this great treasure. This makes it clear that our great power is from God, not from ourselves.
2nd Corinthians
2 Timothy 1:7 NLT
For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.
2 timothy
This clearly states that without this power, we are not able to do much
The power of the Holy Spirit is what enables us to rise above corrupt human behavior and act like Christ
and act like Christ
Romans 15:13 NLT
I pray that God, the source of hope, will fill you completely with joy and peace because you trust in him. Then you will overflow with confident hope through the power of the Holy Spirit.
The power enables us attempt things seemingly beyond our ability but not beyond God’s ability
But not beyond God’s ability
How do we get this power/ dunamis?
There are examples of people receiving this in scripture
Acts 2:1–4 NLT
On the day of Pentecost all the believers were meeting together in one place. Suddenly, there was a sound from heaven like the roaring of a mighty windstorm, and it filled the house where they were sitting. Then, what looked like flames or tongues of fire appeared and settled on each of them. And everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in other languages, as the Holy Spirit gave them this ability.
Acts 2
This was not the receiving of the Holy Spirit
These were already believers
If you have Christ you have the Holy Spirit
What these people were receiving was an infilling of the power of the Holy Spirit
Which manifested itself most commonly by speaking in tongues
But many other abilities would come from
It is the igniting force for the gifts given to you by the Holy Spirit upon conversion
Peter got up and preached his first message at this infilling (coward to captain)
He did not get up and speak in tongues for an hour.
His gifting as a leader was energized by this infilling.
The empowering of the Holy Spirit is visible through many famous lives who never publicly spoke in tongues
Billy Graham, Mother Theresa,
Charles Spurgeon
300 million copies of his sermons and his influence in the formation of over 200 other churches.
He preached to some ten million people worldwide and in the church.
He suffered greatly from depression and physical ailments which neither slowed him down nor stopped him from giving his messages.
John Wesley - Methodist church
This great man of God preached over 40,000 sermons,
gave away more than 30,000 pounds (today, that is around 100 thousand dollars),
Rode over a quarter of a million miles on horseback.
But to be empowered with boldness to enter their giftings and callings with power
Cornelius and his family received the Spirit’s Power
45 The Jewish believers[e] who came with Peter were amazed that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles, too. 46 For they heard them speaking in other tongues and praising God.
acts 10:45-46
Acts 10:45–46 NLT
The Jewish believers who came with Peter were amazed that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles, too. For they heard them speaking in other tongues and praising God. Then Peter asked,
A group of 12 men received the Holy Spirit’s power when Paul prayed for them
Acts 19:2–6 NLT
“Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” he asked them. “No,” they replied, “we haven’t even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.” “Then what baptism did you experience?” he asked. And they replied, “The baptism of John.” Paul said, “John’s baptism called for repentance from sin. But John himself told the people to believe in the one who would come later, meaning Jesus.” As soon as they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. Then when Paul laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in other tongues and prophesied.
Acts 19:2
They did not know about
“No,” they replied, “we haven’t even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.”
They had only heard John’s message
Paul then prays for the manifestation of the Spirit within them
Then when Paul laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in other tongues and prophesied.
And they replied, “The baptism of John.”
They did not understand the Holy Spirit or the message of Christ
Something other than tongues is mentioned as being a sign they were filled
Then when Paul laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in other tongues[b] and prophesied.
If all we think being filled with the Holy Spirit gives us.... is speaking in Tongues?
Paul said, “John’s baptism called for repentance from sin. But John himself told the people to believe in the one who would come later, meaning Jesus.”
We have sadly limited the purpose of the experience
Like having a car and only using it to listen to the radio
Speaking in tongues is having the keys to the car....not driving the car
I do not want people to be filled with the power of the Holy Spirit just to speak in tongues
But to be empowered with boldness to enter their giftings and callings with power
If I had to choose between
someone speaking in tongues or speaking in a known language about Christ
Speaking in a known language about Christ is more important.
1 Corinthians 14:5 NLT
I wish you could all speak in tongues, but even more I wish you could all prophesy. For prophecy is greater than speaking in tongues, unless someone interprets what you are saying so that the whole church will be strengthened.
Prophecy here means to speak with inspiration and power
The power to have a response when someone asks what we believe
The power to explain what we believe
The inspiration to offer Christ as someone’s savior
As soon as they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. Then when Paul laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in other tongues[b] and prophesied.
A powerful prayer meeting after Peter was released from prison

Acts 4 NLT
While Peter and John were speaking to the people, they were confronted by the priests, the captain of the Temple guard, and some of the Sadducees. These leaders were very disturbed that Peter and John were teaching the people that through Jesus there is a resurrection of the dead. They arrested them and, since it was already evening, put them in jail until morning. But many of the people who heard their message believed it, so the number of believers now totaled about 5,000 men, not counting women and children. The next day the council of all the rulers and elders and teachers of religious law met in Jerusalem. Annas the high priest was there, along with Caiaphas, John, Alexander, and other relatives of the high priest. They brought in the two disciples and demanded, “By what power, or in whose name, have you done this?” Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, “Rulers and elders of our people, are we being questioned today because we’ve done a good deed for a crippled man? Do you want to know how he was healed? Let me clearly state to all of you and to all the people of Israel that he was healed by the powerful name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, the man you crucified but whom God raised from the dead. For Jesus is the one referred to in the Scriptures, where it says, ‘The stone that you builders rejected has now become the cornerstone.’ There is salvation in no one else! God has given no other name under heaven by which we must be saved.” The members of the council were amazed when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, for they could see that they were ordinary men with no special training in the Scriptures. They also recognized them as men who had been with Jesus. But since they could see the man who had been healed standing right there among them, there was nothing the council could say. So they ordered Peter and John out of the council chamber and conferred among themselves. “What should we do with these men?” they asked each other. “We can’t deny that they have performed a miraculous sign, and everybodyin Jerusalem knows about it. But to keep them from spreading their propaganda any further, we must warn them not to speak to anyone in Jesus’ name again.” So they called the apostles back in and commanded them never again to speak or teach in the name of Jesus. But Peter and John replied, “Do you think God wants us to obey you rather than him? We cannot stop telling about everything we have seen and heard.” The council then threatened them further, but they finally let them go because they didn’t know how to punish them without starting a riot. For everyone was praising God for this miraculous sign—the healing of a man who had been lame for more than forty years. As soon as they were freed, Peter and John returned to the other believers and told them what the leading priests and elders had said. When they heard the report, all the believers lifted their voices together in prayer to God: “O Sovereign Lord, Creator of heaven and earth, the sea, and everything in them—you spoke long ago by the Holy Spirit through our ancestor David, your servant, saying, ‘Why were the nations so angry? Why did they waste their time with futile plans? The kings of the earth prepared for battle; the rulers gathered together against the Lord and against his Messiah.’ “In fact, this has happened here in this very city! For Herod Antipas, Pontius Pilate the governor, the Gentiles, and the people of Israel were all united against Jesus, your holy servant, whom you anointed. But everything they did was determined beforehand according to your will. And now, O Lord, hear their threats, and give us, your servants, great boldness in preaching your word. Stretch out your hand with healing power; may miraculous signs and wonders be done through the name of your holy servant Jesus.” After this prayer, the meeting place shook, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit. Then they preached the word of God with boldness. All the believers were united in heart and mind. And they felt that what they owned was not their own, so they shared everything they had. The apostles testified powerfully to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and God’s great blessing was upon them all. There were no needy people among them, because those who owned land or houses would sell them and bring the money to the apostles to give to those in need. For instance, there was Joseph, the one the apostles nicknamed Barnabas (which means “Son of Encouragement”). He was from the tribe of Levi and came from the island of Cyprus. He sold a field he owned and brought the money to the apostles.
30 Stretch out your hand with healing power; may miraculous signs and wonders be done through the name of your holy servant Jesus.”
31 After this prayer, the meeting place shook, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit. Then they preached the word of God with boldness.32 All the believers were united in heart and mind.

Acts 4
32 All the believers were united in heart and mind.
It looks like an in-filling of power can happen more than once
1st corinthians 2:4
Jesus is asking us to live lives of truth, obedience and love
1 Corinthians 2:4 NLT
And my message and my preaching were very plain. Rather than using clever and persuasive speeches, I relied only on the power of the Holy Spirit.
That cannot happen without the power of the Holy Spirit living in us and through us
