Hebrews 12:1-2
12 Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2 looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.
I want to preach a sermon called Same Race. Better Runners.

Everybody is in the race.

The Writer is bringing us to the start line of our “faith race”.

Chapter 11 is the “faith Hall of Fame”
The controlling verb “Let us run”.
They ran. Now we run.

The Theme of Hebrews is “Jesus is better”.

You have to run.
Here’s how you can run better.

Run Better with The Encouragement of the Crowd (We are surrounded…)

Witness = Martys = One Who Remembers

When the Bears go the Super Bowl
Some who know what its like to play and not win (Urlacher, Hester, Cutler)
Winners Da Coach, The Video Montage of Sweetness

They have been where I am.

Same jersey.
Continuous story.

Run Better with The Example Of The Christ (called by a victorious saviors)

Looking Away

Soft bigotry of low expectations
Christ is the standard

Reframe the Suffering

There is joy on the other side of the cross
There is glory on the other side the shame

Endurance from Confidence (locked into a steady cadence)

The word means “constancy”

Notice that laying aside the sin in not in the perfect tense (it is a one time thing)
Keep moving forward

But, Faith is not just grit your teeth and keep going

This word “hypomone” is used to translate “hope”
It has two sides to it
A peculiar internal clearness and certainty
A determined self-assertion
Grace + Effort
Something on the inside, working on the outside
The idea is not “keep running because quitting is forbidden”. It is “keep running because God has given you a reason to expect to finish well.”

Biblical Endurance is Hope With Running Shoes On!

You know the story of the little engine that could...

we are THE LITTLE CHRISTIANS THAT COULD
Not “I think I can”
“You say I can”
