Text: John 16:5-15
Series: Seeing Jesus Clearly
Setting: Gospel Community Church, Price, Utah
Good morning and introductions.
Jesus is discipling His disciples with a deep sincerity
Preparing them for His departure.
5 But now I am going to him who sent me, and none of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ 6 But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart.
7 Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. 8 And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment:
9 concerning sin, because they do not believe in me; 10 concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer;
11 concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged. 12 “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.
13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. 14 He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you.
15 All that the Father has is mine; therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.
Pray
Jesus is leaving and talking about another one to come.
One to come that is more advantageous than if Jesus stays.
Who is this “Him” to be sent?
We’ve got two references of the “Him” to be sent.
The Helper in verse 7 and the Spirit of truth in verse 13.
7 Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you.
and
13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.
The Spirit of truth.
Who is the Spirit of truth?
I’m glad you asked.
16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, 17 even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.
26 “But when the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness about me.
Who is the Helper?
The Holy Spirit.
The Greek word used here in reference to the Holy Spirit is Parakletos, which means one who is called to one’s side, especially to help.
The one to come and more advantageous than Jesus staying is the Holy Spirit.
It is God the Holy Spirit!
This is who Jesus is talking about!
But what does all this mean?
5 But now I am going to him who sent me, and none of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ 6 But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart.
There is a meaning or a purpose in the life of Jesus.
It’s not just to walk the earth with a select few at a time
But that’s what the disciples are trapped in.
They still don’t fully understand Jesus’ purpose.
Yes earlier they asked Jesus where is was going.
But not in the context of what’s next in fulfilling the works of the Father but more in the context “where are you going that would make you leave us”
Their question was based more on self interest than the will of the Father.
And what should we all be seeking?
What Jesus seeks. The will of the Father.
38 For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will but the will of him who sent me.
We are called to the will of the Father and that’s good, Amen?
And what’s the will of the Father?
40 For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who looks on the Son and believes in him should have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.”
As we’ll get to more deeply, later in today’s passages.
Belief in His Son, Jesus!
What’s that look like?
19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
This is what we as believers are called to do.
The Great Commission.
This is what the disciples also are being called to do.
This is no easy task.
The world is at the very core against this.
The world is ruled by the enemy.
We are on enemy soil.
And another thing, our very nature as humans born through Adam is sinful.
Outside of Christ man’s nature is sinful!
So this task given to the disciples and us isn’t an easy one.
Behind enemy lines, trying to teach in love, is no small task and is down right impossible by man’s own power alone.
Hence the Word given today.
7 Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you.
The truth, it is better to have the Holy Spirit living within many than Jesus living with just a select few.
Is Jesus great and powerful as a sinless man bearing flesh? Absolutely.
But within the context of the Father’s will and Jesus’ great sacrificial love through the cross, the Holy Spirit living in many believers is better than Jesus living in the flesh with us behind enemy lines.
What does the Holy Spirit bring as a Helper and as Spirit of truth for the Great Commission?
8 And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment:
Convict, To officially decide and prove in a court of law that a person is guilty of a crime.
Let’s look at how this conviction occurs.
9 concerning sin, because they do not believe in me;
This is a tough one sometimes.
One that is hard to discuss because of man’s pride.
So many out there don’t think they need a savior.
They might believe they need a savior because of the ugliness of the world that they live in.
But not because of anything they’ve done to add to it.
In fact, most out in the world would say “I’m really not that bad” “I haven’t killed someone”.
What they’re really saying is by my definition of righteousness, I’m good and therefore if there is a God, He knows my goodness and I’m good.
What comes of that? Lack of repentance!
No reason to change when you’re not that bad. Ya, I’m not perfect but for the most part I’m good and were I’m not perfect Jesus can handle that.
Talk about a total misunderstanding of the Holiness of God and the death of Christ!
God’s not like man! He doesn’t ever not love, He’s always good, He’s always pure, He’s always righteous!
With a heart that says I’m not that bad comes the truth of just how bad your heart is!
The depth of your depravity is severe!
To say you are light in a dark world when you don’t even know what light is, is like a blind man telling you how beautiful the sunset is.
He can’t and either can a man that is blind to the truth righteousness.
Is the world guilty concerning sin? Yes!
Because the Savior has come to redeem and the world ignores Him!
Guilty of non-belief!
I heard something, that goes like this...our judgement comes not by what we’ve done but by what we haven’t done!
Meaning, yes, your sin is bad, but your lack of confession, repentance and belief in Jesus worse.
The ultimate sin, ignoring the Holy Spirits testimony of the works of Jesus. Blasphemy!
31 Therefore I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven people, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven.
We cannot be without Jesus!
You go against the Spirit of truth? Conviction, guilty as charged.
Testimony of the Spirit!
Confess, repent, believe!
The Great Commission must have all of this!
I am a sinner in contrast to the One who is not. Knowledge of needing a Savior is made known!
Through this recognition of my eyes being opened, repentance comes.
And last but not least, I believe in the forgiveness of my sins, not through anything I’ve done but in what my Savior has done!
The Good news of the Gospel!
10 concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer;
The Holy Spirit definitely testifies to the sinfulness of man and Satan.
But He also so testifies to the righteousness of the Father and the Son.
Look to the cross and it’s testament to this day!
A sinless man, never once did anything unloving.
Always seeked the will of the Father in truth and love.
Healed many, gave to many, loved many, feed many.
What was the result of this type of love?
Persecuted, beaten, whipped, mocked, nailed to a cross and then hung upright to hang by those very nails.
Slowly being killed by exhaustion in not being able to push Himself up enough through His nailed feet to release the hanging chest to be able to breath.
This death was horrific, humiliating, and worst of all unjustifed. I pure guiltless man took upon the guilt of the world, for all who believed.
Not just a guiltless man but God the Son bearing flesh as His creation does bore this type of punishment!
All of this for the love of the Father and for what the Father loves. His creation!
You want to see the heart of pure love, pure righteousness? Look no further.
6 For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. 7 For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die— 8 but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
This is the testimony of the Holy Spirit concerning righteousness.
Something the world don’t understand and stands condemned.
I’ve heard “why would I believe in a God that had to die for me to live? Sounds like a weak god”.
Your conviction is just. Pure righteousness ignored!
There’s only One that can go to the Father in righteousness...Jesus
And He gave that righteousness to all who confess, repent, and believe!
11 concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.
Truth, what happened to the ruler of this world?
Once was with and now is no longer.

Satan’s fall from heaven is symbolically described in Isaiah 14:12–14 and Ezekiel 28:12–18. While these two passages are referring specifically to the kings of Babylon and Tyre, we believe they also reference the spiritual power behind those kings, namely, Satan.
12 “How you are fallen from heaven, O Day Star, son of Dawn! How you are cut down to the ground, you who laid the nations low! 13 You said in your heart, ‘I will ascend to heaven; above the stars of God I will set my throne on high; I will sit on the mount of assembly in the far reaches of the north; 14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High.’
and
12 “Son of man, raise a lamentation over the king of Tyre, and say to him, Thus says the Lord God: “You were the signet of perfection, full of wisdom and perfect in beauty. 13 You were in Eden, the garden of God; every precious stone was your covering, sardius, topaz, and diamond, beryl, onyx, and jasper, sapphire, emerald, and carbuncle; and crafted in gold were your settings and your engravings. On the day that you were created they were prepared.
14 You were an anointed guardian cherub. I placed you; you were on the holy mountain of God; in the midst of the stones of fire you walked. 15 You were blameless in your ways from the day you were created, till unrighteousness was found in you.
16 In the abundance of your trade you were filled with violence in your midst, and you sinned; so I cast you as a profane thing from the mountain of God, and I destroyed you, O guardian cherub, from the midst of the stones of fire. 17 Your heart was proud because of your beauty; you corrupted your wisdom for the sake of your splendor. I cast you to the ground; I exposed you before kings, to feast their eyes on you.
18 By the multitude of your iniquities, in the unrighteousness of your trade you profaned your sanctuaries; so I brought fire out from your midst; it consumed you, and I turned you to ashes on the earth in the sight of all who saw you.
Does the enemy believe in Jesus? Absolutely.
What does he do with that belief?
Well I can tell you one thing for sure, he didn’t confess and he didn’t repent.
And he has been judged. He will be in hell.
The same thing awaits those who choose to look at themselves over God.
Folks we were not created for ourselves but for God!
He created us for His glory, not ours.
But at the same time, we are glorified when we are doing the very thing we were created for!
We are never more glorious than when we are glorifying God!
All things created were made for God’s glory.
From a rock, to all the galaxies, to you and me, all created for God’s glory.
But to stop and think for a moment that we were created in His likeness and His image is humbling to say the least.
I get to see the rock and the galaxies, I get to think about the rock and the galaxies, I get to know the very One that created the creation...
Mind blown and I hope this leads us to worship.
I hope this leads us to confession, repentance and believe!
If not, the judgement that Satan received will be the judgement others receive.
Church, the world needs to hear these things.
We need reminded of these things, so we never abuse our given grace.
This is the Great Commission Jesus is setting up the disciples for.
This is the Great Commission Jesus is setting us up for.
Can it be tough? Absolutely!
Again, the world as you once were is against it.
But were not called to do this on our own!
Reread verses!
The Holy Spirit the Helper is here!
To help us hear, to help us walk, and to help us love!
