Bible Reading Challenge
Goal: Read through the entire Bible as a group.
How it works: Grab the Bible book you want to read, and read that book of the Bible. When you’re done, you’re going to fill out this piece of paper. It’s called the 3-2-1 Bible slip, 3 things that surprised you or stories you read about in that book, 2 questions you had while reading, and 1 thing you learned/main idea.
Once you fill this out, proving you really did read the book, put it in this basket, and I’ll mark off that bible book from our chalk wall. Once we’ve read all 66 books of the bible, all of you get rewarded.
Reward: Tim’s Donuts for everyone.

Philippians 2:1 NKJV
1 Therefore if there is any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and mercy,

Vs. 8

I’d like to revisit a little bit of the material that we studied together last week, I just want to make sure we all understand what these verses were saying about Jesus correctly.
(New Slide)
Philippians 2:7–8 NKJV
7 but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross.
These verses just stated something amazing, yet really hard to understand. Jesus is God, and Jesus is man.
Let’s think about that for a second…
How could Jesus be…
Eternal and also born in time?
All-powerful and yet hungry?
All-knowing and yet learning to walk?
The Bible affirms both, this is what people call the hypostatic union. In easier terms, it means the union of Jesus’ two natures…
There are two things we need to understand about this topic…
Nature = What someone is; their essence.
(New Slide)
Powerpoint photos
What is this?
- Teapot = object… It is a solid.
- Cow = Animal, mammal.
- Human = man, person.
Person = Who someone is.
Roach photo (Identify the people)
(New Slide)
Now the Bible says that in Christ, there are two “what’s”
God
Man
These two are united in one “who”
Jesus
Let’s look at some Scripture together…
(New Slide)
Colossians 2:9 NKJV
9 For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily;
Remember what we just said about “what” and “who”…
Colossians 2:9 says “For in Him”, What is the Him? (That’s the “who”, Jesus’ person)
The verse goes on, what lives/dwells in Jesus? (Godhead bodily)
Think again of who/what, what is this? (“What”, it is Jesus’ natures)
Which natures do we see here? (God “Godhead”, Man “bodily”)
Ok, so they both live in Jesus.
How much God is in Jesus and how much man? (all the fullness)
So is Jesus a mix of God and man?
Blender illustration
Jesus is NOT like this. He is 100% both.
So, Jesus took on the form of a man, and humbled Himself. Let’s read vs. 8 again…
(New Slide)
Philippians 2:8 NKJV
8 And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross.
Like we saw last week, how far did Jesus obey God? (To the point of death)
How low is that on the totem pole? (Bottom)
Bad day rating:
1 = Worst day ever
10 = Best day ever
Jesus’ day here was -♾️
Just think about that for a second…
What punishment do we deserve for just 1 sin? (Hell for eternity)
How many times have you sinned in your life? (Millions of times)
Multiply that number by the amount of people that have ever lived (65 billion… ish)
(New Slide)
65 Quadrillion sins paid for (Shot in the dark, it’s probably way more)
65,000,000,000,000,000
Each one of these earned you hell forever. But Jesus on the cross pays for all of these with His life in three hours!
Can you imagine anything more painful than that? (It’s impossible!)
So Jesus is at the lowest point anyone has ever been or ever will be. He is humbled to the very maximum.
(New Slide)
TOP: Heavenly state = Rich, worshipped
DOWN: Birth = Willing slave of all, lowest position
BOTTOM: Death on the cross

Vs. 9

Now that we’ve reached the lowest of lows, we get to verse 9…
Philippians 2:9 NKJV
9 Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name,
Whiteboard:
Q: After reading this verse, which direction should our arrow go now? (Up!)
How much did Jesus get exalted? (Highly exalted)
This word doesn’t do it justice at all. It means “super-exalted”. This is the highest anyone could ever get.
Jesus willingly humbled Himself to serve us. So, because He brought Himself so low, God the Father is going to lift Jesus above every name.

Vs. 10

Philippians 2:10 NKJV
10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth,
Who is going to bow the knee to Jesus? (Every knee will bow to Jesus)
Where will the people be from according to vs. 10? (Those in heaven, those on the earth, under the earth)
Heaven: Who’s there? (Angels & believers)
Earth: Who’s there? (People still alive; believers & unbelievers)
Under the earth: Who’s there? (Dead people, includes demons)
Even they bow their knees; does this mean dead unbelievers and Demons get saved? (No, but even they can’t deny that Jesus is Lord)
Everyone will bow their knee to Jesus. But that experience is going to look totally different for some.
If I bow my knee to Jesus now, is this day in the future going to be a happy one?
What if I refuse to bow the knee in this life? (It will be the worse day ever)
Isn’t it better to bow your knee now? Think about that if you haven’t asked Jesus into your life yet. He is Lord, and everyone will realize that one day. It’s better you accept that truth now while you still have time.

Vs. 11

What will we confess in vs. 11? (That Jesus Christ is Lord)
Philippians 2:11 NKJV
11 and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Everyone is going to confess that Jesus is Lord, He’s the King!
You’ll have no chance of debating this, Jesus is Lord, He is the ruler of all things.
Whiteboard: Think back to how we got here….
END: Jesus is lifted over everything…
Q: But what came first? (The low part, humbling Himself)
ALL of that is for the glory of God!
What comes first, the lifting up? Or the stooping down? (Stooping down)

Application

Based on Jesus’ example, what should be our attitude? (Humble ourselves)
James 4:10 NKJV
10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up.
Humility comes first
God will raise us up in His good timing
