Devoted Week 3 Daily Life Together (Acts 2:46-47) Text: Acts 2:46-47 "And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved." After the dramatic elements of verses 43-45, Luke zooms into something almost mundane: daily meals, ordinary gladness, and a community that outsiders found genuinely attractive. Growth, in the end, is credited to God - "the Lord added" - not to a program or strategy. 1. "Day by day" - devotion measured in ordinary rhythm, not just peak moments - The phrase brackets this section (v.46 and v.47), emphasizing consistency over spectacle. ○ Acts 2:46a - "day by day, attending the temple together" - public, structured worship life. Luke 9:23(esv) 'And he said to all, "If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. ' Public and household worship together - Both temple (large, public, structured) and homes (small, intimate, shared meals) mattered - this wasn't an either/or. ○ Acts 2:46b - "breaking bread in their homes" alongside temple attendance. Acts 20:20(esv). 'how I did not shrink from declaring to you anything that was profitable, and teaching you in public and from house to house, ' Gladness and generosity as the tone, not grim obligation - "Glad and generous hearts" - this community's devotion produced joy, not burden. ○ Nehemiah 8:10 - "the joy of the LORD is your strength." ○ Galatians 5:22 - joy named directly as fruit of the Spirit. 2. Favor with outsiders - attractive, not insular - This community wasn't closed off or suspicious of outsiders; their life together earned genuine goodwill from those watching. ○ Acts 2:47a - "praising God and having favor with all the people." ○ 1 Peter 2:12 - "keep your conduct among the Gentiles honorable... that they may see your good deeds and glorify God." 3. Growth credited to God, not engineered by the church - The passage's final word: "the Lord added to their number" - growth as divine work through a faithful community. ○ Acts 2:47b - "the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved" - passive voice; God is the actor. ○ 1 Corinthians 3:6-7 - "I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth." Application \ ● Where in your life could "day by day" replace "occasionally" - what ordinary rhythm of worship, meals, or generosity could you build into daily or weekly practice? ● If someone outside the church watched your life and your community's life together this month, would they see something like verse 47 - genuine gladness and goodwill - or something else?
