Why Romans?
Why Romans?
“The Epistle to the Romans is the true masterpiece of the New Testament and the very purest Gospel. It is worthy not only that every Christian should know it word for word, by heart, but occupy himself with it every day, as the daily bread of the soul.”
— Martin Luther
Why did Paul write Romans?
Romans 15:24 says, "I hope to see you in passing as I go to Spain, and to be helped on my journey there by you."
Paul is writing around AD 56–57, writing to a mixed Jewish/Gentile church in Rome.
Acts 18:2 says that Aquila and Priscilla had recently left Italy because “Claudius had commanded all the Jews to leave Rome.”
Paul tells us right at the beginning. In Romans 1:5, he says that he received grace and apostleship "to bring about the obedience of faith among all the Gentiles for the sake of his name."
So here is the great theme running through Romans:
The gospel creates faith, faith produces obedience, and all of it is ultimately for the glory of God. John Piper
2. What is Romans about?
ROMANS IS ABOUT THE GOSPEL
ROMANS IS ABOUT THE GOSPEL
Romans 1:7 says:
“To all those in Rome who are loved by God and called to be saints.”
Think of Romans 1:16-17 As our diving board into Romans and the rest of Romans as our pool.
Romans 1:16-17 16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. 17 For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, “The righteous shall live by faith.
Justification - Sanctification - Glorification
