Sunday Service
We we liked what we did last week, where we kind of made right after the sermon. We responded to the sermon and then we pulled back and then he did the offering. But that, man going to try that again. This week. Thanks brother.
Hope you recorded that while we're doing it.
Yeah, so most likely me last week at work to use the same song for both. So we'll try that again this time. So I feel like sometimes I'll probably have a different song for the response to the closing of the service but it works pretty well last week to come back to the same song. Yeah. Yeah. I mean about this when we get there,
I like him. Yeah.
There, it's not a problem.
Build up.
Melanie, I want you to think in terms of never metso Forte, it's always Forte. I mean the contrasts are what make music interesting and like, you just never want to stay in the middle for very long and either needs to be building towards port. A dropping off a cliff to pianissimo to and you do that. Well, you always drop off. Well, but make sure you come back in so we can always build another words. We can't stay at pianissimo, we can't stay at 40. We definitely don't hang out at all.
Just so, you know, never middle grounds like too much of that too much of that time. When we ran through there, just feel like we stayed in the Middle Ground. We were like it and you don't ever want to do that. We want to have extremist. Registry musician. I left the backup. A so you're going to do great is thy faithfulness and way maker
And then I did good good father, before we even started, which of you will you do? You'll be doing good. Good father. So let's go back into that.
Is this in your range to be? Please be seated. Good night. There were singing that song. I was thinking to myself will be there alternative if God wasn't the way maker. What would happen to us. The song is tells us that god holds the world together in the palm of his hand. And if the Lord Works reopen, his hand to remove us from the palm of his hand, we would cease to exist, both non-believers unbelievers in. So we get to walk in his grace, a man, and he truly is the way maker I greet you in the name of our Lord and Savior. Jesus Christ, my name is Douglas Humphrey. I get to serve it to leave Pastor here. So grateful for each. And everyone of you are first time, guess those of you who are returning and those of you who are regular members at Enders and also working for Jesus Christ to this place on today. God bless you. Thank you for joining us on today. We're going to continue our time in the Book of Genesis were in season number 3, looking at unshakable promises. And we've been looking at one specific unshakable promise that came to a man by the name of Abram, and we're going to continue on that way on today. And as we get ready, now to open our Bibles to Genesis 17 picking up from last week when we left off, let me ask you this question. Has anyone in here ever made the decision that you knew deep down inside the moment? You made it, it wasn't probably going to be the best one. Michael Kors in once you made that decision, you were left to live with that. The results of that decision way longer than you expected to, maybe it was that zero down no payment for 72 months, new car, you bought? Maybe it was that couch you bought last year with your income tax return money. But now that you wish you hadn't bought, maybe it was someone you let into your life in the form of a roommate apertures. That seemed like it was a great idea on Tuesday and it turned into a permanent situation for the remainder of your life or for the unforeseeable future. For me, I remember that day. Like, it was yesterday, was freshman year in college. There was this big rush party on campus and I wanted to impress the Greek. So I bought all these adult flavored party favors. You guys don't know what those are. Don't you think, 12 oz cans and I didn't have any money. All I had was a work-study job. And so, what did I do? I use my credit card. Swipe and 30 cases went out the store with me to the party. And I was the life of the party until the credit card bill came and I was left to live with that credit card purchase for going on seven years y'all. Abram and Sarai met. One of those decisions to accept theirs. Didn't turn into this negative credit score or rather it turned into a lifestyle that they had to live with it stayed with them in their house. Last week. We watched a righteous man fall flat on his face when he sinned against God by trying to trying to Priam, got her help God out by entering his cheat code to get himself puts on the only glimmer of hope we saw that a chapter 16 was that now Abram called Ishmael by name there by recognizing them as his own son. That was the only Beacon of Hope. We saw for him this morning, that's what my Bible to chapter 17. There's another gap of time that's passed by last week that we saw 10 years. And this year we're going to see thirteen years to be exact 13 years of living with his past failure because Hagar and Ishmael are living as home 13 years of what Shirley had to be. Some hard awkward conversations with his wife survived because the mother of his illegitimate son, is back living with them, 13 years of striving, a struggling of waiting of going through pain and disappointment and let down and Shirley do all that. They experience. They probably started to feel like they were failures. What God had removed his favor from them because they sinned against him. And so, on this morning, I want to talk to you guys. About what God does after you fail to be faithful to him.
And you're left to live with the consequences of your unfaithfulness to him. And so if you're ready, how about you got your Bibles and open those two Genesis 17. If we're going to be needing a Bible, put your hand up. If you need terminal, Put Your Head Up, will get that stuff to you. We want everyone to have access to God's word and you have a digital Bible. Will let that slide this time. But nonetheless, we're going to be in Genesis 17. And if you haven't say, I got it. If you don't have it, say, hold up. Wait a minute. Let's pray, Grace's father, we come before you. As flawed men and women Lord, our hearts are to live for you but Lord our flesh sometimes dictates otherwise Lord before we even get ready to look at someone else's mishaps and how you had to restore them. Holy Spirit. We invite you to examine us. Help us to see ourselves in this text, help us to see how you are patient and loving and kind and you seek us. Help us a C O Lord, our shortcomings let us not stay. Well, that's not mean I would never do that because load up or being honest and I pray that we are. All of us can see ourselves. We'll see ourselves in this text. We have all fallen short And we need your grace. We need you to pick us back up to build it back up on, to start us a fresh. If we are being honest, we are all on that Continuum of life and so, Holy Spirit, would you now open your eyes to your word, help us to see you a fresh through it and let us leave your change men and women thinking more clearly about your word, your will for us and how we conduct ourselves, in Jesus name in the church says, amen. What I have for us this morning are five reasons, Thrive reasons why your last failure doesn't have to Define who you are today or have the final say five reasons. Why, your last failure doesn't have to have the final say in your life, and here it is. Is the first one you don't have to earn your way back into God's grace, he sees you and he's already coming after. You got seized us and he's already on the way to look at verse number one together, when Abraham was 19-9 years old, The Lord appeared to him saying, I am God Almighty live in my presence and be blameless 13 years between the end of chapter 16. And we find Abram on today, Ishmael was born, when Avery was 86 years old, God doesn't speak to him again until he's ninety-nine 13 years. No vision, No Angel, no word from the Lord know anything. At least recorded for us to know about and then seemingly without warning without apology, without Abram doing anything to earn the Lord to speak to him. God does something he appears to him and he introduces himself on the house introduced himself. He says, I am got all Mighty and Hebrew. That's El Shaddai. The all powerful one. The one who has all power in his hands, God wants them to know exactly who he is. And that what his capabilities are his capabilities are endless. Mini commands, l. Live in my presents. And be blameless another word. Stay close to me. Walk with me, a room, no more hiding, no, more tripping off. No more getting off onto yourself applying men Centric, logic to your situations. No more doing that a real. He says be blameless, not as an be perfect, it means have an undivided Heart Live fully for me be committed to me. My will above all else. No hidden agendas Abram. First number to, it continues on after introducing himself and he says I will set up my Covenant between me and you and I will multiply you greatly. Look at that pronoun. Use their God says, I will Not let's work together on this thing. Not if you can prove yourself, worthy, not. If you can do your part, he says, I will. As in God, is the one who's responsible to bring the Covenant to pay it rests show solely on the Lord shoulders. if you've been a Believer for a while, And you quietly settled into distancing yourself over time for something you did or something you failed to do. You decided maybe without saying it out loud, that you need to prove something before it's safe to come close to again to the Lord. 17:1 says, that's not how the Lord works. I still struggle in. This sometimes not too long ago. I got a note from someone who was dissatisfied with me, that one note sent me into an entire afternoon of Doubt of questioning myself and wondering if I actually have blown it. One note, one afternoon, that's all it took to make me start managing my own way, back to feeling like I was still in God's good grace instead of just trust in him. Instead of just believing, he was already at work on. My behalf should have taken him at his word. I try to stay busy so I was distracted from the pain. I was feeling in my heart and when it finally got talk through it turned out there was a miscommunication on both sides. And so here's where I'm going with that. If you're doing that this morning managing calculating trying to figure out, if you done enough know this, the proof of your place with God was never going to be based on your performance. It was always going to be his initiative. Him coming after you first him speaking to you first, the Apostle Paul adopt the same understanding the Romans 5:8 when he says, while we were yet, sinners Christ died for us. After we clean ourselves up that after we got ourselves together, I made ourselves all better. Not have to figure things out. It says, wow, in the midst of a Christ died for us. So we might be reset reconcile back to God. He came close to us. He came first Jesus is not far off.
God didn't go looking for two new people to work with. He came back to Abram and Sarai the same two who entered the cheat code in the first place. So God comes looking for us. He finds us but where he finds us, doesn't have to Define us. And here is the reason why number 2 God doesn't. My clicker stopped working to help me out David, sorry, bro. God isn't looking at, who you've been? He sees who he wants you to become and he's already working. You toward it first. Number three, this time. It says Abram fell face-down and God spoke with him. That's the response that God commands when he says that, he says this to him. He says to stay in his presence and to live blameless. The response is terrified worship. That's the same type of encounter that. Isaiah had a nice day at 6. When you stood in the throne room with the Lord and saw that the Lord was high and lifted up and he fell flat on his face and spiritual worship of God. And it's fear because Abram's standing before an infinitely, powerful God, the same God who he send against by trying to accelerate the Covenant. And now he's speaking the one-on-one with him and worship, because how else do you respond to a holy and righteous magnificent? God, how else do you respond? To him other than to fall in your face and worship him.
First number for he says, ask for me. Here is my Covenant with. You you will become the father of many nations. Your name will no longer be Abram. Your name will be Abraham for I will make you the father of many nations you guys catch that God, renamed him before there's any evidence to back it up. His new name of the Declaration of who he will. Ultimately become father of a multi tooth is not a reward for what he's done. It's the name signifying but God is Awesome. Ali going to do through him And guys, this isn't the only time in scripture we see God changing someone's name. We say Abram to Abraham later. Jacob to Israel. We see Simon to Peter and probably the most famous. One of all is who saw to Paul you guys already knew it. However in our culture review identity is something we build for ourselves, do we not something that we give ourselves and the anybody who hands the first one is trying to control us. But Genesis 17 says the exact opposite of a name given by God. The only one who already sees the whole of who you're meant to be is more secure than any name, you can bill for yourself. So, please hear me in this because somebody here needs to hear the timer needed to hear this myself. You are not who you say, you are. You are not what others say you are, you know, who you are. You are exactly who God says, you will become. You guys received that. You guys get that, you're not, who you say, you are, what you exactly who God says you will become. And I bring that up because Abram was not the father of multitude just yet, right? But later on he would become and guess how God refers. That's how I got acknowledged him as the father of a great multitude. And you sitting here on today, you are not who you say, you are either, but you will become who God says you will be comped and I don't know who needs to receive that, but surely someone does. Shirley. God continues number 6. He says, I will make you extremely fruitful and we'll make Nations and Kings come from you. I will confirm my Covenant that is between me and you and your future Offspring, throughout their Generations. It's a permanent Covenant to be your God and the god of your Offspring after you and to you and your future Offspring. I will give the land where you are residing all the land of Canaan as a permanent possession. And I will be their God and see what the Lord is doing here. He's renewing his Covenant promise and he's expanding it with Abraham. The same Covenant, with the same man who failed him 13 years earlier has now given in Greater detail, he's going to become of the father of kings are going to come from him. If there's going to be a reception or giving up a Promised Land, the land of Canaan. Atlantic Abram is training residing and that's all going to be long to his offspring. And not only that God promises to be with them, and be their God for all generations. That come after Abraham. And if you're taking that you're tracking with me, one of those featured Kings is going to be King David in from King David Generations later. Another king is going to come, his name is King, Jesus Savior of the world, our Lord and savior. Abram could not have fully understood what God was telling him on that day. But from this fall and broken failure of a man, our Messiah was going to come You guys want to know what's in the power of a name. Everything God speaks over a person comes to pass that's what's in the power of a name and if you are in Christ Jesus you already have a new name and with it an unimaginable future for his glory. Don't freeze yourself in time. Don't allow yourself to be identified by your last failure. Your last set back. Your last whatever you just done and I say that because God hasn't done.
As it turns out the Lord isn't done. Changing name Sariah gets a new one to jump down the first 15 with me. This time, the Lord God said to Abraham, ask for your wife's or I don't call her that anymore. Don't call her Saray for Sarah will be her name. I will bless her and deed. I will give you a son by her. That's important. Have a bless her and she will produce Nations Kings of people will come from her Sarah, it means princess for 13 years, Sarah was known by what she couldn't do, she couldn't give her husband a son. Now, got renames her, buy what she will do not buy her future failure, but by the future at her future as a whole she will become the mother of kings and Nations. By naming her, alongside her husband, Abraham, it signifies that she's a covenant partner standing beside him. Equally marked equally called and the very same sense that holds their share failure.
You know something interesting about a new name is that it doesn't cost you anything to receive it but it does cost you something to keep it. Here is our third reason. Your restart doesn't cost got anything but it will cost you something. And that sacrifice is how you know, if you're really serious this time. This is proof positive that you've learned from your past failure and that you're serious about moving forward with the Lord verse 9, this time. God also said to Abraham ask for you and your Offspring. After you do out there, generation are to keep my Covenant. This is my Covenant between me and your Offspring after you which you are to keep every one of your mail must be circumcised. You must circumcise the Flesh of your foreskin to serve as a sign of the Covenant between me and you. A sign. Doesn't create what's true. It simply makes what true visible. Can I just ate the painfully obvious for a second here? This is a very uncomfortable command. Is it not? Especially for those of us who are guys. What we need to understand is that this command is not a covenant to mark, that says, all you have to do you have to do is belong to God and are committed to doing. So, this is a covenant Mark that simply says that I am committed to the Lord and him alone. First number 12, do ultra Generations. Every male among you is to be circumcised at eight days old, every male born in your household, or purchased from any Foreigner, and not your Offspring. The question is why the whole household even the servants with no blood tie to Abraham? It's because Covenant membership isn't just about bloodline, it's about household inclusion, regardless, regardless of ethnicity or even nationality. God was making himself at least at this time, available to all, who submitted to him. Verses 13 and 14. This time, whether born in your household or purchase, he must be circumcised. My Covenant will be marked in your flesh as a permanent Covenant. It, any mail is not circumcised in the flash of his foreskin, that man will be cut off from his people. He has broken my Covenant. you guys noticed one of our Clans, It cuts into the exact place. The organ of procreation were Abraham, Abraham already tried to manufacture God's promise with Hagar on its own. God, mark. This is the specific site of Abraham's unbelief and like Abram. God's, Abraham like that God's grace. Found you for free. You didn't learn it and you certainly didn't deserve it. It's the gift. But your restart although it's free. It's going to cost you something. Something real, not something random but something specific the very thing you use to stand against him with that. That's what has to be cut off. That's what has to be removed. Maybe it's the mindset a person, I have it, a lie, you told yourself over and over again, whatever it is. That's exactly what God is saying. Getting rid of and cut it out of your life. You can follow me with your whole heart and here's something that's even more difficult for us to understand or accept rather. You can't keep the very thing that blocks your obedience and call yourself serious about moving forward.
That would kind of be like driving away from church on today and you had your car and drive and you throw it in reverse. And you convinced yourself, you can go forward and backwards at the exact same time, it just doesn't work that way. If you throw your car in Reverse, it was old enough, you probably blocked your transmission. But some of us try to treat God. That way we said God we want your grace we want to move for we want forgiveness, we want to start fresh with you but we want to drag that old stuff into the new into what God want to do through his right now. And we wonder why our lives are not any better. We wonder why we still feel distant from God. We wonder why we still feel empty on the inside because you're bringing your sin and see what you were asking God to do for you now or restart is going to cost you letting go of that, very thing that distance you from God in the first place. Can't bring the old into the new Jesus said, do not put new wine into old wineskins.
because they'll burst Guys, removing that thing isn't a suggestion. It's proof that you're serious this time. But even a freshly rename freshly Mark man can still stand right in front of God and doubt. The whole thing is real, which if we're being honest, it's reasonable for its normal to doubt. Whether God can still use, you was not normal. Was acting like you have no doubt at all a room in. This is the part that really just tripped. Me up, guys. First 17 Abrams on his face. He fell face-down, then he did what he laughed and said to himself. Can a child be born to a hundred-year-old man can Sarah a 99 year old woman? Still give birth got to keep it real with you as a parent. This makes me want to take back everything that God has done for Abraham up to this point and say you ungrateful little brat. The same man who fell down and worship of God. Now, he laughed in his face. And as if that's not bad enough, look at what he does. Next, look at his suggestion, his great idea, Verse 18, it shows you, he still has some work to do some growing to do first 18. April said to God, if only Ishmael were acceptable to you,
Say what you mean? The child you made? Because you didn't believe I could do it myself, guys. If this was my son, I would have come unglued on him. And if you guys grip, when I grew up here, if I said, I would have went James Evans on him. You know? Exactly. I'm talking about First 19. God said no your wife Sarah will bear you a son and you will name him Isaac. I will confirm my Covenant with him as a permanent Covenant for his future Offspring. The Lord plays it. Cool, he points them right back to the plan that he already decided in the first place. He says Sarah, no, no, no, Abraham, Sarah will bear you a son. How many of you know that we serve an extremely patient and loving God? And it's a good thing because a lot of us are like Abraham. We have short memories and we have thick skulls Versus 20 and 21 as British male. I've heard you, I will certainly bless him. I will make him. I will make him fruitful and multiply him greatly. He will father, 12, tribal leaders and I will make him into a great nation. But I will confirm my Covenant with Isaac, from Sarah will bear you at this time. Next year. Ensures that Ishmael is going to be blessed for generations to come. He's going to be well off as well, protected by the Lord as well. But did you catch that last part there? The Lord says this time, next year is Sarah is going to give birth to Isaac. The long-awaited child was soon arrive. Despite doubting the Lord to his face, God is still choosing to use Abraham and Sarah.
Loved ones, please receive this. Even when we give up on ourselves, God who is faithful will not give up on us. Our doubt does not deter God. But his patience was never permission to stay where you were reason a five. The only right response to God's undeserved Grace has to actually obey as and start doing what he already instructed you to do. That's verses 22 through 27. When you finish talking with him, God withdrew from Abraham Abraham's moment with God that draws to a close but Watch What Happens next because it's the whole point of this entire chapter verse 23. So Abraham took his son Ishmael and those born in his household or purchase every male among the members of Abraham's household and he's circumcised the Flesh of their foreskin on that very day. Just as God said to him that very day. Not next week, not once they have process all that Abraham, that all that, God said to Abraham that once he felt ready that very day and look at verse 26, the same phrase on that very day Abraham and his son, Ishmael were circumcised the chapter, it open with a man and B falling down on his face in silence. Worshipping. God silence closes with costly obedience, the 13 years of living, with Hagar and Ishmael and his house Abrams. First Act is to recommit himself to the Lord by obeying his command. First, 24, Abraham was 19-9 years old, when the Flesh of his foreskin was circumcised and his son Ishmael was 13 years old, when his flesh was circumcised and all the men of his household were there, born in his household or purchased from a foreigner were circumcised with him. Here's the math. Isaac doesn't show up until April is 100 years old, 14 years after the cheat code to cheat code, the cost in the time. And here's what I want to point out here or Bane. Today does it by that time back? Obedience isn't a shortcut to where you would have been, if you just trust God. In the first place is just what. Trusting? God looks like going for it from your failure. The Mark is already on him. What the laugh is improving, it, but is actually living as if he's trust in the Lord going for it. Abraham didn't wait another day to start living God's promise and neither should you. There's nothing left to prove. Just something left to do same room same day. That's the whole sermon and forwards Abraham's place with God was never something. He was building, never something he could lose over what happened in that room and got in the wait for the room to get clean up. He didn't wait for Abraham to be sure of himself. He came back to the same two people in the same house. Before either of them had done a single thing to deserve his grace. and here's what that means for us today as we get ready to close If you've been carrying around the sense that you're currently on probation with God, waiting to see if he'll come near to you once again. Or once you've proven yourself to be worthy, once you made a change Genesis 17 says, that's not how he works. I don't know why God let 13 years ago and science between chapter 16 and 17. The text doesn't tell us, but I know what? Finally broke that silence. It wasn't Abraham, Zephyrs it wasn't serious efforts, it was God's initiative. God came to Abraham with first and he comes after us the exact same way, a man.
This was actually at stake, if you, if we keep trying to manage our own way back to God through performance, through Penance through human means, we'll keep living like God needs our help, but if you believe what this chapter says, you get to stop. Stop trying to help. Stop trying to manage your own life. Stop, treating your worst chapter, like it's your last chapter, like you're Frozen in Time. But God is speaking to you now now is the time to start living his promise. Walking according to your new name, not your recent failure and the same way Abraham did. The moment he stopped laughing and started moving that same day with no delay. Same room, same two people that's where God found Abraham and Sarah and that's where God finds each and everyone of us.
The question left, is this, will you trust them to that in?
Will you trust into that and where you live? Like you believe. This is true because here's the thing. Loved ones. The proof that your failure doesn't Define you never was based upon your performance was based upon God's initiative him coming after you first. And so if you're here on this morning and you find yourself in a situation where you feel distant from God maybe you feel Frozen in time ever been there before. But I am my last mess up. I am on my last, then I on my last whatever, I just recently did, God is telling us on today through his word in Genesis 17th. That's not how it is. He sees you when he comes after you, he's probably even being pursuing you even already. The question is, will you start living that way? Because he wants to have that relationship with you that way. Let's pray that my father, we come before you as flawed men and women and Lord as much as we'd like to believe that we've overcome, we've grown that we've we've gotten better know. There's still some work yet to be done. Heavenly Father, we are so grateful for the example, you set before us and Abraham most of us were taught that he was basically a perfect man. The old Lord we see that he's a flawed man just like in each and everyone of us and despite his failing his heart was for you and therefore Lord because it was your will to use them and because his heart was for you, you stay faithful to him. Oh Lord. And you do the exact same thing for us. Thank you for being a faithful. God, thank you for being a trustworthy guy. Thank you for not leaving us the way that you found us and thank you Lord for transforming us sometimes quickly. Sometimes we work with you and sometimes though we fight against you, but none, the less you, if you have not decided to leave us and to stop working on us, do you promise in Philippians that you who began a good work in us? Will be Able to see it through to completion. Heavenly Father, we believe that we trust that we wrapped in that. Oh, you're a good good father. And that is who you are help us both to be good. Good children to match your good goodness in Jesus name we pray. Amen.
