Missional Holiness

Life of Paul.
Less about the how more about the why.
Less about the how more about the why.
Less about tactic more about heart.
Less about ability more about necessity.
Life of Paul.
If you want to build a ship, don’t drum up the men and women to gather wood, divide the work, and give orders. Instead, teach them to yearn for the vast and endless sea. - Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

Do you even know me?
Acts 9:1–9 ESV
But Saul, still breathing threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest and asked him for letters to the synagogues at Damascus, so that if he found any belonging to the Way, men or women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem. Now as he went on his way, he approached Damascus, and suddenly a light from heaven shone around him. And falling to the ground, he heard a voice saying to him, “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?” And he said, “Who are you, Lord?” And he said, “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. But rise and enter the city, and you will be told what you are to do.” The men who were traveling with him stood speechless, hearing the voice but seeing no one. Saul rose from the ground, and although his eyes were opened, he saw nothing. So they led him by the hand and brought him into Damascus. And for three days he was without sight, and neither ate nor drank.
He met Jesus. The first part of living a missional life, is a bit to obvious but still needs said. You need to know Jesus. Paul before his conversion new of Jesus, But he had to meet Jesus personally.

Matthew 7:21–23 ESV
“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’
Matt 7:21-

2. Filled with the Spirit.
Acts 9:10–19 ESV
Now there was a disciple at Damascus named Ananias. The Lord said to him in a vision, “Ananias.” And he said, “Here I am, Lord.” And the Lord said to him, “Rise and go to the street called Straight, and at the house of Judas look for a man of Tarsus named Saul, for behold, he is praying, and he has seen in a vision a man named Ananias come in and lay his hands on him so that he might regain his sight.” But Ananias answered, “Lord, I have heard from many about this man, how much evil he has done to your saints at Jerusalem. And here he has authority from the chief priests to bind all who call on your name.” But the Lord said to him, “Go, for he is a chosen instrument of mine to carry my name before the Gentiles and kings and the children of Israel. For I will show him how much he must suffer for the sake of my name.” So Ananias departed and entered the house. And laying his hands on him he said, “Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus who appeared to you on the road by which you came has sent me so that you may regain your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit.” And immediately something like scales fell from his eyes, and he regained his sight. Then he rose and was baptized; and taking food, he was strengthened. For some days he was with the disciples at Damascus.

And immediately he proclaimed Jesus in the synagogues, saying, “He is the Son of God.” And all who heard him were amazed and said, “Is not this the man who made havoc in Jerusalem of those who called upon this name? And has he not come here for this purpose, to bring them bound before the chief priests?” But Saul increased all the more in strength, and confounded the Jews who lived in Damascus by proving that Jesus was the Christ.
Acts 9:
You need the Holy Spirit. Paul was converted but after the Spirit was upon him he went out on mission.
Acts 9:20–22 ESV

When you know Jesus and have the power of the Spirit;
You stop saying I don’t how and start saying He will lead me, he will show me., he will guide me.
You stop I stop saying I don’t know enough and start saying He is all knowing, He has equipped me, He will give me the words.
You stop saying I am scared, and start saying He has not given me a Spirit of fear. I am bold in him.
You stop saying, they will hate me, and start saying he loves them.
You stop saying, I don’t have time and start saying they are worth the time.
You stop saying, I CANT AND START SAYING I WILL.

Do you have a heart for the sea?
The sea of fish, don’t you sea?
Life of Peter,
Life of Peter,
Called to fish. Denied Christ, restored by Christ while eating some fish.
It is not until he receives the Sprit at pentecost that he then lives out this calling and leads thousands to the Lord.
The Spirits ultimate role is to make christ known, he does many other things, comfort and healing, miracles, he convicts sin, grows us in sanctification, but ultimately the Spirit is here to make Christ known, those full of the Spirit make Christ known.
Luke 24:49 ESV
And behold, I am sending the promise of my Father upon you. But stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.”

3. Contextualize
1 Corinthians 9:1 ESV
Am I not free? Am I not an apostle? Have I not seen Jesus our Lord? Are not you my workmanship in the Lord?
1 Corinthians 9:19–23 ESV
For though I am free from all, I have made myself a servant to all, that I might win more of them. To the Jews I became as a Jew, in order to win Jews. To those under the law I became as one under the law (though not being myself under the law) that I might win those under the law. To those outside the law I became as one outside the law (not being outside the law of God but under the law of Christ) that I might win those outside the law. To the weak I became weak, that I might win the weak. I have become all things to all people, that by all means I might save some. I do it all for the sake of the gospel, that I may share with them in its blessings.
