What you think of when you think about God….

I. WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE THIRSTY?

Figuratively, “to desire passionately a spiritual good without which one cannot live,”

: - as in a dry and weary land where there is not water

Two reasons why you are not thirsty?

1. You are too Full on the world’s bread

2. Spiritually Sick Because of Sin

II. WHAT CREATES A THIRSTY SOUL?

1. The wilderness of want

-The Lord’s exposure of our sin creates a wilderness and how we respond in the wilderness makes it one of want for the Lord or want for more of sin

a. Where You Need food and water

o : thirst and faint

o : people were hungry – Jesus fish and loaves

b. You Know What It’s Like to Have been Satisfied in the Past

- You cant long for what you never had

- You cant remember who you never met

Both come in times of desolation/wilderness

III. WHAT HAPPENS WHEN A THIRSTY SOUL DRINKS FROM THE FOUNTAIN OF CHRIST?

John 7:37–39 ESV

On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’ ” Now this he said about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were to receive, for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.

John 7:

1. You get the fulness of God

According to a common oriental view to give drink to the thirsty was a work of practical assistance pleasing to God. Cf. the Egyptian Book of the Dead, 125 (AOT, I, 12): “I have pleased God by something which He loves: I have given bread to the hungry and water to the thirsty

· Thus, Jesus, the Sovereign Lord, is willing and desirous to give you this water and to quench your thirst because in doing this He is pleasing the Father.

o : It is the Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom

§ The kingdom of God is within you

· Not observable: the Kingdom of the Lord is, at the moment, invisible:

o It is in the heart: the reality of the kingdom of God is in the transformed and thirsty hearts for the Lord.

o (ESV)

17 For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking but of righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.

o It is the proven in

§ Repentant people who long for more of its power to explode in their hearts.

§ Forgiving people (forgive from the heart)

§ Loving Jesus (love with all your heart)

o Are YOU HUNGRY FOR THIS? ARE YOU THIRSTY FOR THIS? The proof of you being in the kingdom of God is the fruit of the kingdom in your hearts; a longing and thirsting for more of God.

o (ESV)

17 For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking but of righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.

2. You will long for nothing more than you long for Christ

JESUS SAID YOU WILL NEVER THIRST AGAIN: NOTE THIS

· Not that you will have your thirst quenched for Jesus; the more you drink the greater your satisfaction that this is the only water you WANT

· YOU WILL NOT THIRST FOR THE WORLD OR FOR ITS COUNTERFIET WATER

o Not that you wont be tempted – but you wont long (deep yearning) for the world and its water.

o If you find yourself yearnin for the wowlrd and deeply desiorous of anytin within the world, it is because tou have ot found Jesus to be sayisfying; you are not thirsty for jesus
