Foundations
After the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, which killed 3,500 people and damaged 100,000 buildings across San Francisco, Oakland and Santa Cruz, engineers and city planners retrofit several important structures with earthquake-resistant technologies, like San Francisco City Hall.
Engineers cut the two-block-long building from its foundation and floated it on 530 base isolators.
If seismic waves roll its way in the future, the building will sway horizontally up to 26 inches (66 centimeters) without shaking apart.
The Burj Dubai Tower has recently reached it’s final height of 818m (2,684-ft or almost exactly 1/2 a mile!).
The foundation system for the Burj Dubai is comprised of 192 bored piles (drilled shafts in my practice) 1.5-m (approximately 5-ft) in diameter and approximately 50-m deep (164-ft).
A 3.7-m (12-ft) thick raft foundation sits on top of the piles under the full footprint of the structure.
There are other types of foundations, however, than those merely of buildings.
Spartan new-borns were property of the state and taken at birth and judged by a committee of men on whether it would be a useful member of society or not.
If allowed to live, they were not wrapped up in love with swaddleing clothes but with their limbs free to develop naturally.
Their nurses taught them to be content with their food and not to be afraid of the dark.
From the age of seven onwards, they were trained in the art of war.
