Good morning
A hacker called me the other day and told me he had all my passwords.
I jumped up, grabbed a pen and paper, and said, Thank goodness, what are they!!
This Wednesday is game night!! Come eat dinner and bring your favorite game!!
Who has read the story of Job?
Job was a well of man. He had a wife, children, livestock, servants. The Bible says he was the greatest man among all the people of the east. Job was a pious man. He would offer burnt offerings for his children just in case they might have sinned. This was a regular practice for him!
God let it all be taken from him! In fact, it was God who said to the devil, have you considered my servant Job! God told the devil that he could do what every he wanted to do to Job except kill him. What
Yes, God restored his fortune and double the possessions that he had. He had to endure a great deal of sadness and suffering.
What is the purpose of this story?
What is the purpose of reading the Bible?
Knowing God better!
Job knew God better after all was taken from Him and he suffered.
Suffering while not fun to go through, helps us to know God better. When we come out of the suffering, we can see that God was there with us.
That is the goal of reading our Bibles, to know God. It is a bonus if we are able to take away an application from Scripture, but that is not the main focus of reading our Bibles.
That is what we are doing as we are going through Genesis chapter 1. There are not a lot of applications that can come from looking at God create everything. But we can know Him better by reading it.
Today we are going to take a look at days 4 and 5 of creation. God is going to create the sun, moon, and stars and the animals.
Please stand as we prepare to hear God’s Word.
Genesis 1:14–23 NASB 2020
14 Then God said, “Let there be lights in the expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night, and they shall serve as signs and for seasons, and for days and years; 15 and they shall serve as lights in the expanse of the heavens to give light on the earth”; and it was so. 16 God made the two great lights, the greater light to govern the day, and the lesser light to govern the night; He made the stars also. 17 God placed them in the expanse of the heavens to give light on the earth, 18 and to govern the day and the night, and to separate the light from the darkness; and God saw that it was good. 19 And there was evening and there was morning, a fourth day. 20 Then God said, “Let the waters teem with swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth in the open expanse of the heavens.” 21 And God created the great sea creatures and every living creature that moves, with which the waters swarmed, according to their kind, and every winged bird according to its kind; and God saw that it was good. 22 God blessed them, saying, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth.” 23 And there was evening and there was morning, a fifth day.
Pray
Again God spoke and created the lights in the sky. Remember, the earth has had light for three days without these bodies in the sky. God could have left the light like it was on day one, but He didn’t. He created the sun, moon, and stars not for light, but to serve as markers for signs, seasons, days, and years.
God created the vegetation before He created the sun. God wanted to show that He alone is the life giver! God not the sun is the sustainer of life. Ultimately, life is dependent on God, not the sun or the phases of the moon.
God was showing the Israelites that the gods of the people that were around them are powerless and that life only comes from the Great I am! Elohim was showing them why it was worth keeping the second commandment!
The creation story was meant to shatter the allure of the false gods of Israel, and it should do the same for us today! In our culture, people still worship contemporary versions of these ancient fertility gods that promise things like the American dream. The creation story reorients us to resist this siren song by instead worshipping the God who spoke the sun, moon, and uncountable stars into existence by just speaking! Genesis 1 shows that God is the creator of all, form the smallest plant on earth to the largest star in the galaxy. God shows His sovereignty over all living things by sustaining them through the provision of water and light.
We don’t know exactly how many stars there are in the milky way galaxy. It is estimated to be between 100 Billion and 400 Billion.
The galaxy is so big, we don’t even have a real picture of it. All the pictures you have seen of the milky way are what people think it looks like. Man nor satellite have ever left the milky way galaxy. All that was created in less than one day just by God speaking!
At the Speed of Light (c): It takes 500 years to break out vertically and 100,000 years to cross the main disk horizontally. Escaping the massive dark matter halo takes around 923,000 years.
It is hard to grasp just how massive our galaxy is. It was nothing for God to create. He did it in less than a day.
Psalm 8:3 NASB 2020
3 When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, The moon and the stars, which You have set in place;
He placed every star in its location in the heavens!
Psalm 147:4 NASB 2020
4 He counts the number of the stars; He gives names to all of them.
Not only has God counted all the stars, He has given all of them names!!
Day 5
God creates the creatures of the sea, sky. He created all animals from the smallest to the largest, including dinosaurses.
Job 40:15 NASB 2020
15 “Behold, Behemoth, which I made as well as you; He eats grass like an ox.
Job 41:1 NASB 2020
1 “Can you drag out Leviathan with a fishhook, And press down his tongue with a rope?
These were large animal that God created, one on the land and one in the sea.
These sea and air animals that God created, they are the first things that He blessed. He saw that they were good and He blessed them. He told them to be fruitful and multiply. They were to fill the seas and the sky.
It is estimated that there are between 50 and 85 billion birds living on earth!
There are estimated to be around 2 million animals in the seas. Since most of the oceans are explored, we don’t know for sure.
That is a lot of animals alive at once in the sky and in the seas. The variety amongst them is truly amazing. That alone to me disproves evolution or the big bang theory!
When a person dives down in the waters 30 feet, they add 1 atmosphere of pressure to their bodies. If that person was to dive down 30’ and rush up while holding their breath, they would die. Their lungs would explode, they would try and double in size. Imagine when they go deeper. When they go deeper, there is another problem, nitrogen in the blood. If that same person when down 90’, that would be 4 atmospheres, if they rushed up the same way, the nitrogen in their blood would begin to bubble like it was boiling and they could die from this.
Have you ever wondered how a whale that is 100’ long gets around this? If a whale dives, it’s head could be 100’ down and its tail at the surface.
Collapsing lungs: As whales dive deeper, the water pressure forces their lungs and tiny air sacs (alveoli) to collapse completely.
Flexible rib cages: Their ribs are loosely jointed and hinged, allowing their chest walls to bend inward safely without injury.
No gas exchange: Collapsing the lungs stops air from mixing with the blood at depth. This prevents nitrogen from dissolving into their tissues
Humans on absorb 10-15% of the oxygen we inhale. Whales absorb 85% of the oxygen they inhale. That is why they can afford to have their lungs collapse. The oxygen is absorbed so they can empty their lungs and have them collapse.
Birds have an even more amazing way that they breathe. Birds have the most efficient respiratory system in the animal kingdom. This is how they can fly at heights where there is very little oxygen. The Bar-headed Goose can fly over the summit of Mt. Everest with no issues. Humans on the other hand, struggle to get enough oxygen at 29,029’. Our respiratory system mixes old air in our lungs with the new that we breathe in. We never completely expel all the old air that we breathed in.
A single breath in a bird takes a four-step cycle requiring two full inhalations and exhalations to pass completely through the body: [1, 2]
First Inhalation: Fresh air enters through the nostrils and trachea, moving straight into the posterior (rear) air sacs.
First Exhalation: Air moves out of the posterior air sacs and flows forward into the lungs, where oxygen exchange happens.
Second Inhalation: Air moves out of the lungs and into the anterior (front) air sacs, while a fresh breath enters the rear air sacs again.
Second Exhalation: Air is finally pushed out of the anterior air sacs and exits through the trachea.
Key Features of Avian Respiration
No Diaphragm: Birds lack a diaphragm. They use body and rib movements to act like a bellows system to expand and contract their air sacs.
Stationary Lungs: Unlike human lungs that inflate and deflate, bird lungs stay rigid and fixed in place.
High Efficiency: Because airflow moves in one direction, fresh air never mixes with stale air. According to the Carnegie Museum of Natural History, this makes the avian system the most efficient in the animal kingdom, allowing birds to fly at extreme high altitudes where oxygen is scarce.
That is not something that happens by just chance. Also, this could not have been evolved. The first whale that didn’t have collapsible lungs would have died on the first dive. This is clearly a sign of intelligent design! The is a creator, it was not left to chance.
God could have created everything in an instant. He didn’t do that. He chose to show His glory through His creativity. Just think about it, the size of the great blue whale, the brilliant colors of the reef fish and parrots. The grace of the eagle as it soars effortlessly through the sky. The playfulness of dolphins. Every creature in creation helps to display the glory of God.
The 5th day shows that creation is not just intended for the presence of humanity. The creation, in all its vast array, is intended to be home to the animals and also a temple worthy of the presence of God. Genesis 1, in fact, describes the universe as the temple of God and Eden like the holy of holies. The creativity of His handiwork sets the stage for the worship of His glory.
God creates the universe and fills it with His presence. God creates the world with such majesty because He is going to take up residence in it. This picture of the temple points ahead to the way Jesus speaks about Himself as the temple of God. John 2:18-22
John 2:18–22 NASB 2020
18 The Jews then said to Him, “What sign do You show us as your authority for doing these things?” 19 Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” 20 The Jews then said, “It took forty-six years to build this temple, and yet You will raise it up in three days?” 21 But He was speaking about the temple of His body. 22 So when He was raised from the dead, His disciples remembered that He said this; and they believed the Scripture and the word which Jesus had spoken.
It also foreshadows wonders to come Revelation 21:1-4
Revelation 21:1–4 NASB 2020
1 Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth passed away, and there is no longer any sea. 2 And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. 3 And I heard a loud voice from the throne, saying, “Behold, the tabernacle of God is among the people, and He will dwell among them, and they shall be His people, and God Himself will be among them, 4 and He will wipe away every tear from their eyes; and there will no longer be any death; there will no longer be any mourning, or crying, or pain; the first things have passed away.”
Revelation 21:22–23 NASB 2020
22 I saw no temple in it, for the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb are its temple. 23 And the city has no need of the sun or of the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God has illuminated it, and its lamp is the Lamb.
God used creation to reveal Himself to us. We get to see His power, authority, creativity, order, thoughtfulness, wisdom, the list is endless.
