Lord’s Supper

Matthew 26:26–29 KJV 1900
26 And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body. 27 And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it; 28 For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins. 29 But I say unto you, I will not drink henceforth of this fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.
Lets pray
Introduction
I’m talking about the Lord’s supper today
After our sermon, we will be having the Communion today after our sermon
Jesus has explained the Passover in the context
of the New Testament ordinance Communion
and He explains the passover in light of
the Old Testament
and it all points to Jesus Christ
1 Corinthians 5:7 KJV 1900
7 Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us:
This tells us that Jesus fulfilled the Passover
and so it actually says purge out the old leaven
that you may be a new lump
as you are unleavened
for Christ our Passover Lamb has been sacrificed for us
this was the last passover
it wasn’t just the Last Supper
because the Passover was fulfilled in Jesus Christ
this is the final legitimate Passover
so we are not celebrating Passover today
1 Corinthians 5:7 tells us it found its fulfillment
in the death of Christ so this is the final one
The Lord’s Supper in this context points back to the Passover
it is on the Passover
and then the Lord’s Supper points to the death of Christ
What does this mean?
so the Lord’s Supper is really a pivot in Biblical History
a turning point
because up until this point
they have been celebrating the Passover
that’s pointing to the death of Christ
and now at the Passover
the Lord’s Supper is instituted
and that is pointing us back to the death of Christ
that is a pivot
the final legit Passover is celebrated in Matthew 26
this was a pivot in Biblical history
much of the Old Testament pointed towards it
and now in these New Testament times it points back
to the Lord’s Supper
it points back to the death of Christ
there are groups today who think they still need to celebrate the Passover
but this is an illegitimate teaching
it has no foundation in Scripture
and what we are reading today is the final Passover required of God
it is very clear with the teaching in 1 Corinthians
that this all came to fulfillment in the death of Christ
He is out Passover Lamb
to celebrate Passover
you would be confused
unless you believe Christ needs to die every year
of course you don’t believe that
if that is the case
you can not believe that we need to celebrate the Passover
because the celebration of the Passover was
the sacrifice of the Passover Lamb
so there is no need for that anymore
today I am going to be talking about the Lord’s Supper
I have three points
I want to explain to you what the bread represents
it represents the body of Christ
and I am going to explain to you what the wine represents
it represents the blood of Christ
and then my third point is to provide hope of the second coming of Christ
the Lord’s Supper points back to the death of Christ
and then even as it assures us of the pardon in forgiveness we have in Christ
it points forward to the hope of God’s final complete Redemption
at His second coming
so there is a lot going on in the Lord’s Supper
Let us talk about the bread
There are two elements in the Lord’s Supper
the first is the bread
the second is the wine
the bread represents the body of Christ
the bread is eaten first
a bread is a staple food in any society
Jesus knew this
because in this verse
Matthew 6:11 KJV 1900
11 Give us this day our daily bread.
He taught us how to pray
and He said in our prayer
we are supposed to pray to God
give us this day our daily bread
so bread symbolizes in one sense a staple food
and God’s continual sustaining of us through food
and in this
Jesus associates the bread with His own body
now as they were eating
Jesus took the bread and after blessing it
broke it
and gave it to the disciples
notice He took the bread and after blessing it
broke it
so it is very appropriate to give thanks
for your food
you should always give thanks for your food
the actual praying for your food before you receive your food and before you eat your food
is how your food is blessed
It is how it is sanctified
it is how the situation is made holy
Jesus does that here
and then He breaks it in front of them
this is very emphatic
Jesus took the bread and after blessing it
broke it
so at this institution of the Lord’s Supper
the bread is broken in front of the disciples
this represents the body being broken for us
Matthew 26:26 KJV 1900
26 And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body.
It represents the breaking of the body
now Jesus’ bones were never broken
Psalm 34:20 KJV 1900
20 He keepeth all his bones: Not one of them is broken.
but His body is broken
and His skin is broken
and His muscles are broken
His back is lacerated with whips
His brow is broken with the crown of thorns
as they dig into His skin around His head
His feet is broken by nails being driven into them
so His body is broken
the breaking of the bread together is the bread is actually broken
it is not just a metaphor
When we say we are breaking bread together
it should actually be done
it displays the fact
and it reminds us visually
that Christ’s body was broken
the broken loaf represents the broken body
Jesus command the disciples
and says take eat
this is my body
notice Jesus does not put the bread into the mouth of the person receiving it
He says take and eat
So we should offer the elements of communion
have the people take it for themselves
you should feel it in your hands
you should decide to put it into your mouth
Let us talk about the wine
so the bread points us to the body of Christ
it was broken for us
the wine represents the blood of Christ that was spilled for us
this is the cup taken second to the bread
so there is an order to this order
you eat first and then you drink at the Lord’s Supper
Matthew 26:27 KJV 1900
27 And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it;
He took the cup
and gave thanks
He did this just as He did with the bread
He blessed it
I think the blessing is the thanks ,
the thanks is the blessing
we should always give thanks for our food and our drink
look at this
1 Timothy 4:4 KJV 1900
4 For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving:
everything is created by God
everything created by God is good
nothing is to be refused
if it is received with Thanksgiving
for it is made holy by the word of God in prayer
so the Scriptures actually teach us that when we eat and when we drink
the food we are eating in the New Covenant and when we drink
our food is blessed and made holy by our Thanksgiving and prayer
so Jesus appropriately gives thanks for the bread and He gives thanks for the wine in the cup
Matthew 26:28 KJV 1900
28 For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.
Jesus says this is my blood of the new testament
and Moses had people put blood on the door posts
so the angel of death would pass over the house while in Egypt
the people who had the lamb’s blood on their door post
their firstborn son was spared
the people who didn’t
God had their firstborn son killed
and that was pointing towards this Passover Lamb
who was Jesus
and God has always ratified His covenants with blood
so an example of this can be found here
Exodus 24:8 KJV 1900
8 And Moses took the blood, and sprinkled it on the people, and said, Behold the blood of the covenant, which the Lord hath made with you concerning all these words.
where the Covenant at Sinai is ratified
with blood
Moses took the blood and threw it on the people
and said behold the blood of the Covenant
which the Lord has made with you
in accordance with all these words
Every time God makes a covenant with His people
there is blood there to ratify it
that even happened with Noah
God made a covenant with creation
and there was certainly a sign in the rainbow
but the Covenant
Noah sacrificed an animal
so the Covenant ratification between God and man
and in New Covenant
is the same
but this time it is not the blood of bulls
it is the blood of Christ whereby this Covenant is ratified
look at Zechariah
Zechariah 9:11 KJV 1900
11 As for thee also, by the blood of thy covenant I have sent forth thy prisoners out of the pit wherein is no water.
God draws on the ratification by blood
and says as for you also
because of the blood of my covenant with you
I will set your prisoners free from the waterless pit
again God remembering the blood of the covenant
and He is promising them freedom
Christ’s blood is the ratification of the covenant
as the covenant is being ratified of this very point
or at the point of Christ’s blood
I want to show the emphasis here in verse 28
Matthew 26:28 KJV 1900
28 For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.
He tells us who the blood is poured out for
look at what it says
notice it does not say all
it says many
which is shed for many
for the remission of sins
so the blood of Jesus Christ is
when His blood was shed on the cross
that is the point at which God’s anger for sin was satisfied
there was satisfaction of God’s anger achieved in the shedding of Christ’s blood
and the shedding of Christ’s blood satisfied the anger of God not towards all people
but just many people
not all but many people
this is plainly obvious in Scripture
Matthew 1:21 KJV 1900
21 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.
this verse emphasizes this point
notice
she shall bring forth a son,
and thou shalt call his name
Jesus
for he shall save his people
stop
did that just say he will save his people
notice it doesn’t say all
it says for he shall save his people from their sins
now look at this
Matthew 20:28 KJV 1900
28 Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.
Notice this says the same thing
even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto,
but to minister,
and to give his life a ransom for many
so at the point of satisfaction
when God’s satisfaction was made
when His anger was satisfied
it was only satisfied as it pertains to believers
to those who accept Christ as their Lord and Savior
Jesus says it as much in verse 28
Matthew 26:28 KJV 1900
28 For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.
this is my blood of the new testament
which is shed for many
for the remission of sins
so this is consistent with all the saving acts of God
Isaiah 53:12 KJV 1900
12 Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, And he shall divide the spoil with the strong; Because he hath poured out his soul unto death: And he was numbered with the transgressors; And he bare the sin of many, And made intercession for the transgressors.
so there is great confidence in gospel preaching
because it is not your job to bring people to Christ
it is your job to follow the Holy Spirit through His guidance and deliver what He wants you to do
the Holy Spirit draws them to God
they choose to believe or not
let us take a quick look at the word covenant
The New Covenant
Jeremiah 31 talks about this New Covenant
this includes a heart regeneration
having the law of God written on our hearts
and the forgiveness of sins
Jeremiah 31:31–34 KJV 1900
31 Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, That I will make a new covenant With the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah: 32 Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers In the day that I took them by the hand To bring them out of the land of Egypt; Which my covenant they brake, Although I was an husband unto them, saith the Lord: 33 But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the Lord, I will put my law in their inward parts, And write it in their hearts; And will be their God, And they shall be my people. 34 And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: For they shall all know me, From the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the Lord: For I will forgive their iniquity, And I will remember their sin no more.
this goes with the promise of God’s covenant with Abraham
it was a covenant that He made with the Hebrew nation
contained within God’s promise to Abraham
was that God would use the Seed of Abraham
to bring forth the New Covenant
Genesis 12:1–3 KJV 1900
1 Now the Lord had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father’s house, unto a land that I will shew thee: 2 And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing: 3 And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.
that is the promise of the Lord’s Supper
Hebrews 9:22 KJV 1900
22 And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.
this tells us that without the shedding of blood
there is no forgiveness of sins
so the bread and wine point back to the death of Christ
they interpret it for us
how they interpret it is thewy tell us when you partake of them
that you sins are forgiven
this is an assurance that they are pardoned
this is an assurance for you
you receive this assurance that your sins are forgiven
that the blood was shed for you
the body was broken for you
God’s anger was satisfied by Christ
you have no sins counted on your account
Christ’s righteousness has been imputed to you
so the bread and wine all point back to the death of Jesus
they all communicate to you that you have the remission of sins
you are part of the New Covenant
Let’s pray
