Not necessarily a bad thing
Pastor Mike Madigan would always ask if you had a verse to confirm any life decision
But we must be careful not to completely rip verses out of context
This verse is not about us today - but instead was a promise given to
a specific people - the Jews
at a specific time - during the exile to Babylon
for a specific purpose - to remind them that their exile was temporary and that God wasn’t finished with them yet
When I was courting Bekah Mike asked me if I had a verse that confirmed our relationship
As much of a treasure as my wife is - she is not the treasure Paul had in mind when he wrote this verse so many years ago

Up until the modern era the entire goal of a child’s life was to get out on their own

There are several pictures in the Bible of men who tried to do it on their own

Given charge by God to watch over the Garden and his wife
Was nearby when Eve was deceived by the Serpent - but stood by and didn’t intervene

Instead of following God’s ways - he decided to do it on his own with devastating results
Cain
Cain grew up and cultivated the ground
He offered a sacrifice to God not out of his best - he was trying to practice his own way giving not his best but from whatever he had
He became angry because his offering wasn’t accepted - his attempt at religion
He murdered his brother and then lied to God about it
Jacob
Jacob is the younger twin brother of Esau
Bought his brother’s birthright for a bowl of stew
Stole his brother’s blessing by deceiving his father
Fled when Esau threatened to kill him
Yet God blessed him -
And made His covenant with him
King Saul
Chosen by God as the first King of Israel
Commanded to kill Agag all the people of Amalek and slaughter all their animals
He kept the best of the animals and spared the king
As a result God ripped the kingdom from him and gave it to David
He turned to a medium to try and get an answer when God refused to answer him
Samson
Placed his trust for strength in his own hair rather than trust God

He kept some of his profits back but told Peter that he’d given everything to the Lord

Any time we try to operate in our own strength we will always come up short
We are incapable of being self-sufficient
Yet Paul writes that he can do all things - what are these things?
All Things?
Philippians 4:13; 1 Corinthians 2:2; Ephesians 2:10
I would agree with the Word Biblical Commentary which translates “all things” as “all such situations”
Another way to say what Paul is meaning here is to say “all these things”
Paul could not actually do “all thing”
He was in prison in Rome - he couldn’t get up and leave a free man
What were the things that Paul could do?
He could persevere with joy regardless of his circumstances
He could continue to preach Christ
He could continue to edify his churches through his letters
He could continue to do the good works which God had set out before him
The “all” which Paul refers to here has nothing to do with temporal success
It has to do with physically persevering through the circumstances in which he finds himself
The secret of Paul’s independence was his dependence upon Christ
Through Christ Who Strengthens Me

Paul recognizes where his strength comes from
There is another failure in the Bible who tried to do things on his own
His name was Saul
He was a persecutor of Christians on his way to Damascus
He was a practicer of religion but didn’t realize he’d missed the point
Yet on the road to Damascus he met Christ - and it changed his whole world
Paul recognized that the life he now lived was not lived under his own power but under the guidance and direction of Christ through the Holy Spirit
He knew that the source of his power was only to be found in the cross.
One commentary says that when he reached the limit of his resources and strength, even to the point of death, he was infuse with the strength of Christ
I disagree - Paul knew that it wasn’t I’ll do my best and Christ will do the rest
Or when my strength fails Christ’s shows up
He knew that his renewed body and spirit was first and foremost operating in Christ’s strength
