16 ‘Cursed is he who dishonors his father or mother.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’
When we come to the Fifth Commandment, we need to approach it with a measure of humility. None of us comes from a perfect home. Every family has its challenges. Every parent has made mistakes, and every child has made mistakes. Some families have experienced disagreements, disappointments, strained relationships, broken trust, and wounds that may take years to heal.
13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the Law, having become a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree”—
14 in order that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we would receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.
We need to proclaim the gospel of Jesus to redeem those lost souls and to Reverse the Curse that plaguing our cities, decimating our homes, ruining private moments with our loved ones? We see the physical evidence of a spiritual condition that the Lord has finished on Calvery’s cross.
The Fifth Commandment is not simply about what our parents deserve from us. It is about the kind of people God is calling us to become. It teaches us how to respond to authority, how to deal with family wounds, how to practice forgiveness with wisdom, and how to keep another person's failures from determining our own spiritual condition.
as Ex 20.2 states that The Lord has delivered you out of Egypt(Freed to Live) and has now commissioned us to covenant 1. no other gods, 2. no idols, 3 Do not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, 4. Remember the Sabbath
So when we hear the 5th command
12 “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be prolonged in the land which the Lord your God gives you.
Yet, in the midst of those realities, God still establishes a divine principle:
So, as we open Exodus 20:12, let us remember that God is not asking us to pretend that our families are perfect. He is calling us to honor His design for the family even when living that out is difficult.
In this commandment, we discover both a standard God requires and a promise God provides.
There are two points I would like to express and be out of your way.
Point 1- Remember the Honor
12 “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be prolonged in the land which the Lord your God gives you.
In order to reverse the curse we have to Remember that …
Honor matters to God.
The command uses kabod, which carries weight and substance—literally “to make heavy” or “to give weight to.”
This term reflects the same root used for God’s “glory,” establishing a theological parallel between honoring parents and honoring the divine.
The verb demands more than emotional sentiment; it requires treating parents as weighty, significant figures deserving substantive respect and care.
We are to Honor those who not just gave us life, but sustained our life. Whether they be biological or adoptive.
But we also need to understand what biblical honor means—and what it does not mean.
Biblical honor does not mean:
Approving of everything a parent has done.
Denying the pain or disappointment we may have experienced.
Remaining in an abusive or destructive situation.
Abandoning wisdom or healthy boundaries.
Allowing someone else's failures to control the condition of our hearts.
Sometimes honor may look like:
Making the phone call.
Taking the time to listen.
Choosing silence instead of responding to hurtful words.
Showing compassion for what they did right.
Establishing appropriate boundaries when necessary.
Protecting ourselves or our children from harm.
Because honor is not the same thing as submission to dysfunction.
If we are honest, we may all have to pray:
“Lord, help me honor my parents—and help me become the kind of parent my children can honor.”
It’s not my father or not my mother, but its me o Lord standing in the need of prayer ( 2x’s)
The commandment does not call us to become prisoners of our family history. It calls us to maintain a posture of honor before God, even when our family relationships are complicated.
And perhaps that is why this commandment speaks to all of us. Some of us have wonderful memories of our parents. Some have complicated memories. Some are carrying wounds.
We are called to give honor to whom Honor ia due…and Jesus expands this command further
50 “For whoever does the will of My Father who is in heaven, he is My brother and sister and mother.”
21 But He answered and said to them, “My mother and My brothers are these who hear the word of God and do it.”
When we disobey the will of the Father, we have no relationship to Jesus.
Thats why we have these senseless crimes in our city and our country, folk are living under a curse where they dishonor, treat lightly, like a piece of lint or a bottle cap a couple taking a stroll and attacked for no reason but reveals they have no relationship with Jesus and they have forgotten the 5th command.
they cannot love they neighbor because they have no honor for parents whether biological or not.
And because they have forgotten to Honor their parents, they cannot give glory and Honor to God...
7 Lift up your heads, O gates, And be lifted up, O ancient doors, That the King of glory may come in!
8 Who is the King of glory? The Lord strong and mighty, The Lord mighty in battle.
9 Lift up your heads, O gates, And lift them up, O ancient doors, That the King of glory may come in!
10 Who is this King of glory? The Lord of hosts, He is the King of glory. Selah.
The curse can be reversed if they give the King of Glory, the King of Weightiness, the King Who Was, Who IS , and will always be Heavy…..The Lord ( The One who IS) :
Strong- the Mighty One
Mighty- Gibbor - Champion, Hero, vigorous,
There are times when honoring a parent may mean loving them from a distance. It may mean choosing not to retaliate, refusing to speak with hatred, praying for them, forgiving them, or releasing the expectation that they will someday become the person we wished they would be.
Point 2- Remember the Reward
12 “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be prolonged in the land which the Lord your God gives you.
Why was Israel removed from the Land? They continued to dishonor God’s word, and dishonor each other. No love of God or neighbor. They forgotten the reward and was displaced from the Land.
7 “They have treated father and mother lightly within you. The alien they have oppressed in your midst; the fatherless and the widow they have wronged in you.
Ok United States, Baltimore City, State of Maryland, we need laws that honor family, not tear them apart…..God knows that this is the hardest one right here, thats why he attatched a promise to it…
That is why we approach this commandment not from a position of superiority, but from a position of grace.
God gives blessings to his people who serve him faithfully and who suffer for him. God himself is his people’s greatest reward. The fulness will be theirs at the coming of Jesus Christ.
40 “So you shall keep His statutes and His commandments which I am giving you today, that it may go well with you and with your children after you, and that you may live long on the land which the Lord your God is giving you for all time.”
1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.
2 Honor your father and mother (which is the first commandment with a promise),
3 so that it may be well with you, and that you may live long on the earth.
Paul expands this from his jewish audience to the entire earth….
There is a reward for Honoring this commandment. When honor his word we honor Him when we honor Him we get to receive God as our reward…
12 “Behold, I am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me, to render to every man according to what he has done.
10 Behold, the Lord God will come with strong hand, And his arm shall rule for him: Behold, his reward is with him, And his work before him.
4 And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory.
The suffering in t his life is not in vain….there is a reward Not just for the nation of Israel, but to all who by faith believe and Trust in Him….
23 His lord said unto him, Well done, good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.
