This series is all about discovering how the Names of God… bring definition and clarity to God.

The challenge is this… everyone is trying to define God….

From Culture … to podcasters…. Your friends…

SO… HOW DO WE KNOW WHO IS RIGHT…. Who Gets the final say when it comes to defining God?

God does…

Here is the reality…

We DON’T get to name Him becuase he has already done that for us.

This is where we turn to the WORD of God…. scripture… to see how God has chosen to reveals himself to humanity.

Today we are going to be looking at… 2 short passages of scripture

TEXT: Gen. 16:7-14 and Gen. 15:22-26

Sermon Title | He is our El Roy and Jehovah Rapha

These are the names we’re going to UNPACK TODAY…

Here’s…

What’s at stake?

If we miss this..

Let's look at it on the screen together.

If we misunderstand God as El Roy and Jehovah-Rapha we risk walking through life alone and unwell.

Anyone want a life of loneliness and chronic sickness - in the spirit, soul or body? Me neither!

How has God revealed Himself…. in scripture… IN YOUR NOTES…

He is revealed as El ROY Gen 16:7-14)

We see this in… Gen 16:7-14

Backstory:

Last week we talked about the Miracle child of Abraham and Sarah…

What we didn't talk about was…

The dark part of their story… which was impatience of Sarah and Abrahams. As we know Sarah was awaiting to become pregnant with the Promised Child that would bless the nations.

After 10 years of trying to have children… So she told Abraham to take her servant… Hagar… and have a child with her….

In the Old Testament…. it was often custom that when a wife could not have a child, a servant would carry the child on behalf of the family. The problem is… this is NOT what God told her to do.

How many of you know… this made things complicated… becuase Abraham and Hagar…. had to be intimate with each other.

Hagar has Abraham’s son…

Sarah naturally begins to look down on Hagar…. perhaps it was Jealousy, anger or resentment…. due to the fact that she could not have her own children…

She treats Hagar so bad… that Hagar actually FLEE’S from the family and run’s away.

Lets pick up here in v.7 its says this

English Standard Version (Chapter 16) 7 The angel of the LORD found her(Hagar) by a spring of water in the wilderness, the spring on the way to Shur. 8 And he said, “Hagar servant of Sarai(ee), where have you come from and where are you going?” She said, “I am fleeing from my mistress Sarai(ee).” 9 The angel of the LORD said to her, “Return to your mistress and submit to her.” 10 The angel of the LORD also said to her, “I will surely multiply your offspring so that they cannot be numbered for multitude.”(In other words they will be to many of them to count) 11 And the angel of the LORD said to her, “Behold, you are pregnant and shall bear a son. You shall call his name Ishmael,

By the way… this story… happens to be where the roots of Islam begin with Hagar’s Child… Ishmael…

You shall call his name Ishmael…. because the LORD has listened to your affliction. 12  He shall be a wild-donkey of a man, his hand against everyone…. and everyone’s hand against him… and he shall dwell over-against… all his kinsmen.”

Sadly…. Ishmael has lived out his name -

Here is the Key verse: v.13… God reveals himself here as …. El Roi…

English Standard Version Chapter 16

13 So she

This is the only time in scripture that someone else attaches a title to the name of God…, the Holy Spirit see’s it fit to place this in scripture as a way to reveal himself to us…

El Roy…. simply means… The God who see’s.

This servant woman, who was looked down upon… and Cast out of the home … no one stood up for her… no one to come to her defense.

God chooses this moment to be written in scripture… by this Cast away… that recognizes him as… the GOD WHO SEE’S

What is God saying as he call’s Himself El Roy?

IN YOUR NOTES… he is saying

He is saying, “I am the God that GETS YOU”. (2 Chr. 16:9a)

Did you know that God gets you… he see’s you… right where you are…

In difficult times its easy to feel like NO ONE UNDERSTAND…

El Roy does…

2 Chr. 16:9 reminds us of this it says…

2 Chronicles 16:9a (ESV) For the EYES OF THE LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to give strong support to those whose heart is blameless toward him…

God eyes never stop moving.. he never STOPS SEEING… YOU…

If God is truly the Elo Ro-yee… the God that see’s… what does this mean for your life?

It means there is never a moment that you suffer alone…

See’s the pain, the weariness, the hopelessness and despair of those in need.

I see you…

This morning as I was praying I felt compelled to say…

There is also never a moment of victory that you go through alone… you might not have a mom or dad on the sidelines of your life… present to see the high moments, the proud moments of sucess… just know GOD see’s them.

This is a profound moment in Scripture… as he is telling the Hagar’s - of the world…

I see you too! EVERY MOMENT… and I get you… I FEEL YOU…

Let’s not ignore the fact that Abraham’s-faith is tested… and he is weak… and choses to do things on HIS OWN TERMS…

Here is the reality…

When we try to do things without God they get complicated

Abraham had to learn this the hard way …

What was supposed to be the PROMISED CHILD… became a corrupt seed…

Church when we do things our own way… we corrupt the plan… and we plant a seed that Will only GET IN THE WAY and contend with God's will. WOW!

Here is the good news… But our mess doesn’t cancel God’s promise or His grace. God still fulfilled His promise through Isaac, and He still saw and cared for Hagar in the middle of the mess.

Here is the question I believe scripture is inviting us to ask ourselves today…

Question: What are you trying to do without God?

I promise you don’t want to live with the consequences… YES GOD WILL FORGIVE YOU… but you will pay greatly and it will NOT be worth it!

he want’s us to know him as Elroy(ee)… The God who see’s us…

How else does God reveal himself… next… IN YOUR NOTES…

God say’s I am Jehovah RAPHA Ex. 15:22-26

We see this in… Ex. 15:22-26

Context:

Abrahams child - Isaac…. became a great nation as God promised… known as Israel or The Israelites.

They found themselves persecuted and enslaved…

So God sent them… Moses… the deliver…

The famous Red Sea… splits in two…. and He leads them through… they become a free from mistreatment and slavery

After a few short days… they found themselves getting grumpy in dessert

This leads us to verse 22 in our story.

English Standard Version (Chapter 15) 22 Then Moses made Israel set out from the Red Sea, and they went into the wilderness of Shur. They went THREE days in the wilderness and found no water. 23 When they came to Marah(Mm-air-ah) , they could not drink the water of Marah (Mm-air-ah) because it was bitter; therefore it was named Marah(Mm-air-ah) . 24 And the people grumbled against Moses, saying, “What shall we drink?”

They we’re just delivered and singing praises to God and their leader Moses -after 3 days of struggle and hardship they fell apart… How many of you know… Hardship will break you down and distort your vision - cause you to forget about the promise’s of God…

What is God saying as he call’s Himself Jehovah Rapha? What does this mean for us today?

IN YOUR NOTES…

He is saying, “I am your HEALER.” (1 Pet. 2:24)

The people learned a simple principal that day… it’s this…

No matter how beat up you get in this life… whether… in your spirit, soul or body… HE IS MIGHTY to HEAL

But notice there are conditions… and it’s simple…

Obediance brings blessings that heal / Disobedience brings judgement that hurt.

Throughout Israel’s history… as they walked in obediance things went very well for them…

When they walked in disobedience… it brought difficulty and judgement

Have you noticed this in your life…?

Friends… Sin has consequences…

The guilty suffer the consequences of their own sin.

and…

Sometimes… the innocent suffer the consequences others sins…

The New Testament calls this Reaping and sowing in Gal 6:7

Sow obediance reap blessings of Jehovah Rapha our healer…

In our Spirit

In our Soul

In our Body

Sow disobedience reap the consequences of sin…

Everything in this… old Testament story…. too points to the JESUS as our ultimate… HEALER….

We see this in 1 Peter…. 2:24

1 Peter 2:24 ESV

He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed.

Church… God has continued to pour out his HEALING power… by providing healing through JESUS….

Friends… curse of sin includes… sickness… it affects every part of our being. (Spirit, Soul and Body)

The Cross of Christ provides healing every part of our being…

God say’s to us today… as you obey me…

There is healing for your SPIRIT - SOUL(mental wellbeing) and BODY…

I don’t know what hurts in you today…

Here is the question I believe scripture is inviting us to ask ourselves today…

Question: What hurt do you need to bring to the healer?

God wants to touch us and heal us…

He can do a miracle today - right here and now

He can do it as you seek professional advise through Doctor’s and counselors

He can do it through the wisdom of his word… as he leads you to stop putting yourself in difficult situations that is causing he pain and suffering you experiance.

This is the part we must remember as God told the people as you obey me… walk before me… you ways will BE MUCH EASIER.

God has made himself known to us in his names… he is our El Roi and Jehovah Rapha…

He is saying…

“I SEE you and I’m here to heal you”

Becuase of sin we reap what we sow… we also reap what others so…

This makes life painful and difficult…

But here me…

There is nothing that hurts you… that cannot be HEALED by God.

The God who SEES you is the God who HEALS you.

So, what hurt do you need to bring to the Healer?

Salvation Altar Call

I believe Jesus is here today, and He wants to save you. Salvation simply means to deliver or to free. It’s not just about delivering you…

It’s about believing

Believing in Jesus means trusting what He say’s—about sin, and eternal punishment, thats the bad news.

The good news is this… that His death on the cross paid the penalty for our sins, making us right with God.

Ephesians 2:8 reminds us: “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God.” Salvation requires two things:

1. God’s Grace—His undeserved gift of forgiveness and life because of His love for you.

2. Faith—placing your trust in Him for salvation.

If you’ve never asked Jesus to save you, today is your day. If you’d like ask him… , raise your hand.

I want to invite you to Repeat a prayer after me

· There is nothing magical in this prayer.. it simply is a way of declaring to Jesus what has taken place in your heart.

Tongues & Interpretation

1. To STRENGTHEN the Church (1 Cor14:5)

For prophecy is greater than SPEAKING in TONGUES, unless someone interprets what you are saying so that the whole church will be STRENGTHENED.

Believers, God has operated through this gift today to strengthen you today. Let your faith be strengthened and know that God is in control and using supernatural measures to speak to us.

2. Is a SIGN for unbelievers. (1Cor. 14: 21a, 22)

1 Corinthians 14:21–22 (ESV)

In the Law it is written, “By people of strange tongues and by the lips of foreigners will I speak to this people, and even then they will not listen to me, says the Lord.” Thus tongues are a sign not for believers but for unbelievers, while prophecy is a sign not for unbelievers but for believers.

22 -  So you see that speaking in tongues is a SIGN, not for believers, but for UNBELIEVERS.

The Bible explains to us God has chosen to use this gift to be a sign for you. A sign for what? It is a sign of his realness for those of you who have been doubting or questioning the existence of God. He wants you to know he is REAL and he wants to bring you spiritual life and health. If you're in here today and you don't know Jesus as your personal Lord and Savior... he wants you to know he has gone to great lengths to show you his love today. (Great opportunity for a salvation altar call if it fits).
