Communion

This weekend is a long weekend, if you didn’t know- and it’s the kings birthday long weekend. It’s not actually his brithday, that’s in november.
But for the sake of the calendar makers and societal planning at large we celebrate it at the end of the the september school holidays.
What does it mean for us to have a King? I may offend some royalists, but not much.
He is distant.
He holds very little power.
He is a figure head.
More celebrity than statesman.
We think of him little and have little to do with him.
That’s different to the description of the God which we have come to worship this morning.
We have heard in Exodus that He draws near.
That He is a God abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness, is gracious and slow to anger.
We sung that he is able and with us.
He has done great things.
He is not a figure head but the God of glory, LORD of hosts and the majestic King of Kings.
Tomorrow is the public holiday for King Charles and, not shade on him, but I doubt many of us will do any remembering and acknowledging of what he has done for us- for what has he?
Our service, the reason why we gather is exactly that. We should not come for ourselves, though there is benefit for us to be here.
No, we come to remember our true King. King Jesus, and all that he has done for us.
The one who revealed to us the coming Kingdom. One where sin and suffering are no more. Where darkness is not present and has no power.
Of a coming ressurection.
Of a present freedom from sin.
Of a reconciliation of the lost and the broken to a heavenly family.
Of a higher calling, purpose and identity as children of God.
A king who pours of grace, love, mercy and hope, who fills us with His Holy Spirit to lead lives which honour our friends and family.
It is in Christ and Christ alone that we have freedom from sin and can be resurrected to eternal life.
He did this for us and achieved it all through his sacrifice and death on the cross.
The night before He was crucified, He sat with his friends and followers and shared a meal.
He took the bread, respresented by the cracker, and said this is my body given for you, take of it and eat in rememberance of me.
Jesus body, he says, is the bread of life- given to sustain us.
In the same way he took the cup and said this is my blood of the covenant, poured out for you for, for the forgiveness of sins.
Jesus’ blood signed, sealed and fulfilled, mankinds obligations under the covenant, providing for us legal standing and right to be forgiven by God and welcomed into eternal life.
Today, would you remember King Jesus.
What has he done for you? What has he provided for you?
Remember every sin, forgiven and paid for.
Remember the freedom from sin and the coming hope.
Remember your brothers and sisters, seated beside you.
Remember an eternity won for you and a present presented to you.
Take the bread and reflect and give thanks, gloify the LORD in your heart this morning. Hold onto the cup and we will drink together in a moment as a sign of unity.
