Remember the Deep Rooted Tree
Remember the Deep Rooted Tree
Why is it easier to trust God in theory than in the middle of a trial? Or maybe let me ask it this way, what is one challenge or difficult season that taught you an important lesson about faith?
Most believers want stronger faith, greater maturity, and a deeper trust in God. Yet those qualities are often developed through the very trials we would prefer to avoid if we can.
Remember the deep rooted tree? See. A tree growing in perfect conditions often develops shallow roots, why? Because it never has to struggle for water or stability. But a tree exposed to wind, drought, and storms develops roots that stretch deeper into the ground. Those deeper roots make the tree stronger and more stable. The same principle is true spiritually. Trials may not be enjoyable, but God uses them for the good, to deepen our roots in Christ.
Storms reveal the strength of a tree’s roots. Trials real the depths of our faith.
Big Idea for today: God uses trials to develop spiritual endurance, to deepen our hope, and to strengthen our faith so that we remain steadfast in Christ.
Trials Can Produce Spiritual Growth
Trials Can Produce Spiritual Growth
I do not think people say “yeah” another trial or tribulation. But James says count it all a joy, lets turn to Jam1:2-4, and see exactly what he has to say and see what we can learn about perseverance and the root of perseverance here.
James 1:2–4 “Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. And let endurance have its perfect result, so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.”
Notice that James does not say “if” trials comes but “when” they come.
Trials are a normal part of life, so they are a part of the Christian life, Christian experience too. Just because you are a Christian does not exempt you, but it does equip you for the trials.
God can use difficulties for spiritual purposes.
Testing reveals AND strengthens genuine faith.
Endurance is developed through perseverance and oftentimes it happens in adversity.
Key point: Trials are not obstacles to spiritual growth; they are often the pathway to it.
Discussion Question: Why do you think God often grows us through challenges rather than comfort?
Endurance Leads to Maturity
Endurance Leads to Maturity
May we just stay to our text and focus on the later verses (vv.3-4) now, for they look at qualities to be developed through the trials.
James 1:3–4 “knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. And let endurance have its perfect result, so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.”
Spiritual endurance is developed over time, not overnight.
Mature faith does not emerge instantly.
Perseverance teaches patience and trust.
God desires believers who are spiritually complete and stable.
Key point: God is more concerned with our growth than our comfort.
Discussion question: What qualities area developed in believers who remain faithful through difficult seasons?
We Run the Race with Perseverance
We Run the Race with Perseverance
No one runs a race without training for it do they? You do not wake up one day and decide to run a marathon that day without preparing for it for many months. Our lives are a race that takes perseverance and as a Christian we are to run with perseverance that God gives us on the race that God sets before us.
Let us turn to Hebrews 12:1–3 “Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. For consider Him who has endured such hostility by sinners against Himself, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.”
Now, let’s just focus on (v.1) for right at the moment.
The Christian life is pictured as a race.
Every believer faces obstacles and distractions.
Sin easily entangles and hinders spiritual progress.
Endurance requires intentional commitment and perseverance.
Faithfulness is measured not simply by how we start but by how we finish.
Key point: Perseverance requires continuously choosing faithfulness.
Discussion Question: What are some common obstacles that hinder spiritual endurance today?
We Stay Focused on Jesus
We Stay Focused on Jesus
Endurance takes training, takes effort, and Jesus set an example for us in the things He suffered. Let us continue to look at our passage now focusing on (v.2).
Hebrews 12:1–3 “Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. For consider Him who has endured such hostility by sinners against Himself, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.”
Jesus experienced rejection, suffering, and opposition.
He understands our struggles.
Remembering Christ’s endurance keeps us from becoming discouraged.
Christian hope is based on God’s promises, not present circumstances.
We have a minute, let me introduce a few more supporting scriptures here:
Romans 5:3–5 “And not only this, but we also exult in our tribulations, knowing that tribulation brings about perseverance; and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope; and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.”
and then there is
2 Corinthians 4:16–18 “Therefore we do not lose heart, but though our outer man is decaying, yet our inner man is being renewed day by day. For momentary, light affliction is producing for us an eternal weight of glory far beyond all comparison, while we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen; for the things which are seen are temporal, but the things which are not seen are eternal.”
Just one more
Romans 8:18 “For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory that is to be revealed to us.”
Future glory provides strength for present trials.
Key Point: Hope gives believers the strength to continue when circumstances are difficult.
Discussion question: How does biblical hope differ from the way the world often defines hope?
What is Spiritual Resilience?

Applications for Today
Applications for Today
Today we have looked at sections of scripture dealing with perseverance. Looking at joining that with joy and hope. That God uses our trials to grow us, but it takes perseverance for us to run the race of life “HE” has set before us and we need to run it daily and be faithful until the end, not perfect, but faithful. So, now how about some applications for today?
Identify a current trial if any, time to get real.
What challenge are you currently facing and not admitting to yourself or anyone else?
Give that burden to God and ask Him to use it for your growth.
Change your perspective, your outlook at things.
Instead of asking “why is this happening,” ask “What might God be teaching me through this?”
Strengthen your support system.
Reach out to trusted believers who can encourage and pray for you, remember we are better together.
Focus on Jesus daily.
Spend time each daily reflecting on Christ’s faithfulness and His endurance.
Commit to finishing the race well
Make a personal commitment to remail faithful regardless of circumstances.
Remember that perseverance is a daily choice, and you have been equipped for it! It is your choice to develop it.
(Conclusion) -God never promised us a life free from trials and stresses. In fact He said you will have tribulations (Jn16:33) What we have looked at today is that through His presence His strength, His faithfulness every difficulty and trial can produce endurance and maturity. Hebrews reminded us to run the race with perseverance, fixing our eyes on Jesus the Author and perfector of our faith. Who endured the shame of the cross and overcame it!
As we conclude this series, we are reminded that deep roots are often formed through difficult seasons. The believer who remains rooted in Scripture, prayer, worship, community, and holiness will be prepared to persevere through life’s storms.
The goal is not just to merely to survive trials. The goal is to remain faithful to Christ through them.
Our Big idea today was: God uses trials to develop spiritual endurance, deepen our hope and strengthen our faith so that we remain steadfast in Christ. Hopefully we have seen that.
Our takeaway is that a rooted Christian perseveres through trials by fixing their eyes on Jesus, trusting God’s purposes and remaining faithful despite the difficult circumstances for He is the author and finisher of our faith.
