Introduction

Peter has been warning us of false prophets that will rise in the last days. Now, he draws our attention to the scoffers that will come.
scoff 1 |skôfskäf| verb [no object] speak to someone or about something in a scornfully derisive or mocking way: department officials scoffed at the allegations | [with direct speech] : “You, a scientist?” he scoffed.
People will scoff about Christ’s return in the last days.
2 Peter 3:1–7 HCSB
Dear friends, this is now the second letter I have written to you; in both letters, I want to develop a genuine understanding with a reminder, so that you can remember the words previously spoken by the holy prophets and the command of our Lord and Savior given through your apostles. First, be aware of this: Scoffers will come in the last days to scoff, living according to their own desires, saying, “Where is the promise of His coming? Ever since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they have been since the beginning of creation.” They willfully ignore this: Long ago the heavens and the earth were brought about from water and through water by the word of God. Through these waters the world of that time perished when it was flooded. But by the same word, the present heavens and earth are stored up for fire, being kept until the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men.

Our minds must be stimulated

We cannot ignore the value and importance of what was spoken by the prophets.
OT writers have much to say about God’s judgment on humanity.
Their writings are not only valuable for eschatology, but teach us about God and what He expects of us.
We must continue to remember the commands of Jesus .
Jesus’s commands further clarified God’s expectations of us.
Jesus also taught much about His return.

Scoffers will scoff at His return

They ask, “Where is the promise of His coming?”
They claim that there is no judgment coming.
They continue in their lusts and sin with out second thought of any consequence.
They make fun of those that say the end is near.
Even people who claim to be Christians scoff at the promise of Christ’s return.
The idea of Jesus’s imminent return should not motivate us to laziness, but should spur us to reach every soul that we can.

Scoffers deliberately forget three things:

That God’s Word created the world.

With the exception of man, God spoke all things into existence.

That God’s Word destroyed the world.

God has already judged the world once. He caused the world to flood with water in the days of Noah.

That God’s Word stores up fire to destroy the world in the day of judgment.

God’s word is clear on the subject - judgment day is coming. Yet, the scoffers reject the idea because they do not want to be held accountable for their sin.
