Holy Spirit Week 5

Notes
Transcript

Thank the Lord for Randy Odom bringing the Word last week.
I was challenged and learned by the scripture he brought to us.
We are doing a deep dive into the Holy Spirit and we have made our way through the Old Testament and now we find ourselves in the New Testament.
Last week, was Acts 2.
The heart and tongue are connected. Out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks. He touched their tongues with fire.
Got to get in my prayer closet
God moving on so many and the nations coming together and hearing the Gospel in their language.
Let me keep shaping us as a congregation. I want us to always gather to hear the Word of God taught. Something that has been on my heart this week is that when we gather we don’t as the question “how did they do?” We ask the question “what did we learn?”. How did he or she do is based on performance and what did we learn is that when the Word is opened we want to learn.
We are at a place in society where everything gets a review. So we often approach everything as though it is a review. Well that was 3.5 stars or that was incredible 4.5 stars today.
It is not our responsibility to rate the word of God. It is our job to receive the Word and then rate our lives up next to the Word of God.
Alright, I want to back us up just a bit from Acts 2 and bring us back to Jesus and see the Holy Spirit move and work in this incredible passage of Luke 10. I want to read the passage that I am teaching through so that you can see it as a whole then we will break it down.
You ready? Let’s Go!
Luke 10:17–22 HCSB
17 The Seventy returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons submit to us in Your name.” 18 He said to them, “I watched Satan fall from heaven like a lightning flash. 19 Look, I have given you the authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and over all the power of the enemy; nothing will ever harm you. 20 However, don’t rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.” 21 In that same hour He rejoiced in the Holy Spirit and said, “I praise You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because You have hidden these things from the wise and the learned and have revealed them to infants. Yes, Father, because this was Your good pleasure. 22 All things have been entrusted to Me by My Father. No one knows who the Son is except the Father, and who the Father is except the Son, and anyone to whom the Son desires to reveal Him.”
The 70 are sent out. This is a hyperlink to the 70 in the Old Testament and if you remember we talked about one and the many. The Spirit coming on the one and then we See the Spirit that was put on Moses comes on the 70 to share the heavy burden that was placed on Moses.
This 70 in the New Testament are sent out like lambs among wolves. They were to go to towns and stay with those who welcomed them.
Cameron in his notes pointed out that it is cool that hospitality is a sign of welcoming the message of the Kingdom.
I think this is a whole different sermon but you think about putting that in to today’s terms. Would you invite your favorite pastor over to the house? or Are you concerned that the message of the Kingdom may not be present in your home?
I was thinking about this for myself and there are some days when I am on fire for the Lord and I would be like yes come over and see us thriving and there are other days when i am like nope don’t come over because I don’t want you to see me at my worst when trying to lead my family.
Just notice that the message of the Kingdom was shown to be accepted based on their hospitality
They are told to enter a town and to heal the sick who are there and tell them The Kingdom of God has come near you.
So they go and come back and now we get to see what happens when they get back.
Luke 10:17 HCSB
17 The Seventy returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons submit to us in Your name.”
They return with JOY
They are stoked. They are high fiving one another. They are fired up.
This is a return from the greatest church moment you can imagine or maybe the best concert you have ever been to or this is the return from the mission trip moment.
These guys are fired up!
They are full of joy.
Lord even the demons submit to us in your name.
They are sent out to heal the sick. In healing the sick, they come back and say Lord even the demons submit to us in your name.
I don’t want to go as far to say that all sickness is demonic but I do believe sickness is more Spiritual then we tend to realize in our western culture. (Don’t for get the passage where it says who sinned this man or his parents and Jesus says neither this happened so that the Lord might be glorified)
So they are fired up
Now watch as Jesus responds to them and pay special attention to Jesus’s response here.
Luke 10:18–20 HCSB
18 He said to them, “I watched Satan fall from heaven like a lightning flash. 19 Look, I have given you the authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and over all the power of the enemy; nothing will ever harm you. 20 However, don’t rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.”
The verb that is used here is imperfect tense.
I was watching
Commentaries agree that this is not that Jesus is recalling the moment that Satan fell from heaven but it is that he is seeing Satan defeated in the actions of the 70.
The healing of the sick and the work Gospel ministry of restoring humans to live God’s design for their life. Jesus says I see Satan falling.
I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and over all the power of the enemy; nothing will ever harm you.
This is another hyper link to Genesis 3:15
Genesis 3:15 HCSB
15 I will put hostility between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed. He will strike your head, and you will strike his heel.
Nothing will ever harm you
Is Jesus saying that you can handle snakes and scorpions?
NO
Is Jesus saying that you will never die?
NO
Read this in context of what follows this verse.
Luke 10:20 HCSB
20 However, don’t rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.”
Jesus kinda rebukes/disciplines them.
He says don’t rejoice that the spirits submit to you but rejoice that your names are written in heaven
The real rejoicing is not that you have victory over spirits
Those who have been delivered from spirits will one day die. Those who are healed will die.
Rejoice that your names are written in heaven
are written (Perfect tense)
This points to what is permanent
Nothing will harm you is not a promise that you won’t die but it is a pointing us toward eternal life in Christ Jesus.
Don’t live a life of fear because if you are a follower of Jesus then when does eternal life begin?
Now. There is not a spirit that conquers you as a follower of Jesus.
So much humility here
Don’t rejoice that spirits submit to you but rejoice in your salvation.
Don’t rejoice in what you do but in whose you are
You are saved, blood bought and child of the King
Luke 10:21 HCSB
21 In that same hour He rejoiced in the Holy Spirit and said, “I praise You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because You have hidden these things from the wise and the learned and have revealed them to infants. Yes, Father, because this was Your good pleasure.
This verse is incredible. Everyone say incredible!
Jesus is speaking and he rejoiced in the Holy Spirit and said, “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth,
Look at the trinity and the community of our triune God in this verse.
Jesus, Holy Spirit and God the Father
Now look at what Jesus is doing. What is Jesus doing?
He is rejoicing in the Holy Spirit
Jesus is full of Joy
Jesus is full of Joy right after instructing the 70 and saying don’t rejoice that spirits submit to you but rejoice that your names are written in heaven
(Application: Jesus is not mad correcting them in what they should not do and telling them what they should be doing)
he is full of joy in this instructional passage
I apply this to my life in that every time you correct someone you don’t have to be mad about it. You can give instructions with joy.
Coaches, teachers, bosses, leaders and parents Jesus told them how they were to rejoice and right after it says he is filled with Joy in the Holy Spirit.
Why is he rejoicing in the Holy Spirit?
Because the Kingdom of Heaven has come near. His Spirit is moving and Satan is falling. The followers of Jesus are living as he designed in the Kingdom and Satan is falling.
Application:
I was reflecting on this and wondering what this looks like in todays time.
I was taken back to 2020 to start with when covid hit
This church swung into action. We cleaned out all the chairs in the sanctuary and this place became a warehouse for food.
We were concerned that kids not going back to school when families had planned for this to happen that the lack of food in the home would cause child abuse and neglect to go up.
Stress on the home causes these things. So we wanted to stop out that spirit in our community. So we started going door to door when they told us that we should not touch gas pumps because covid would spread.
This church said we are not willing that any child in our community should suffer. We have the hope of eternity and we are not going to be dumb about this but we are going to not let the enemy win.
I also thought about every Wednesday night where we are busing kids in to have a hot meal and hear the Gospel
At the end of our night on Wednesday nights, we gather for prayer I have this mental image of Jesus standing in the corner pumping his fist
Saying yes, yes, yes, yes, I rejoice in the Spirit, I praise you Father Lord of Heaven and Earth
Look at them, Look at Bridge of Faith, Look tonight they defeated spirits tonight. They broke the bondage of the enemy.
They told children in the Kingdom that they matter. Some who society has kicked to the curb and said you won’t amount to anything tonight you trampled on that serpent’s head and said you matter. You belong here. You are important.
Luke 10:22 HCSB
22 All things have been entrusted to Me by My Father. No one knows who the Son is except the Father, and who the Father is except the Son, and anyone to whom the Son desires to reveal Him.”
It is through Jesus and only through Jesus that people come to know the as he is
God is as Jesus revealed him
Holy Spirit
Don’t rejoice in spirits submitting to you but rejoice in your salvation
Major in salvation and minor in spirits submitting to you
A part of God’s kingdom coming is spirits submitting and people are being healed
Jesus rejoices in the Spirit when followers of Jesus live with the Holy Spirit according to how God designed and tramples on serpents and defeats satan.
The only way to know God the Father is through God the Son and the Holy Spirit.
If you was here when I shared about the lady on the back sidewalk that was delivered in a God moment.
The response to that moment is not that we rejoice that demons submitted to us in the name of Jesus
We rejoice in our salvation
