Author

Author of Hebrews neither names himself nor clearly designates audience.

Audience

Written to encourage Christians in a time of trial.
The traditional title “to the Hebrews” reflects the ancient assumption that the original recipients were Jewish Christians.
SIMPLIFIED - Based on what’s written… The author wrote to people who understood the examples used in Hebrews.
I think it’s ironic

Purpose

Written to encourage Christians in a time of trial.
Focus on the absolute supremacy and sufficiency of Jesus Christ.

What does Supremacy and Sufficiency mean?

Supremacy definition? The state of being superior to all others in authority, power, or status.
Example
Sufficiency definition? Adequate to meet one’s needs.
Example A plumber is sufficient to fix the leak in my bathroom.

Light Exposition of

Comparison to angels.

Light Exposition of

Warning against neglecting the founder of our salvation.

Jesus is greater than Moses in a few ways...
First, consider him…, a good example .
Second, reference (the builder) and
Disobedience flows from unbelief.
Examples: referencing Exodus and
Psalm 95 ESV
1 Oh come, let us sing to the Lord; let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation! 2 Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving; let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise! 3 For the Lord is a great God, and a great King above all gods. 4 In his hand are the depths of the earth; the heights of the mountains are his also. 5 The sea is his, for he made it, and his hands formed the dry land. 6 Oh come, let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before the Lord, our Maker! 7 For he is our God, and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand. Today, if you hear his voice, 8 do not harden your hearts, as at Meribah, as on the day at Massah in the wilderness, 9 when your fathers put me to the test and put me to the proof, though they had seen my work. 10 For forty years I loathed that generation and said, “They are a people who go astray in their heart, and they have not known my ways.” 11 Therefore I swore in my wrath, “They shall not enter my rest.”
Exodus 14:10–12 ESV
10 When Pharaoh drew near, the people of Israel lifted up their eyes, and behold, the Egyptians were marching after them, and they feared greatly. And the people of Israel cried out to the Lord. 11 They said to Moses, “Is it because there are no graves in Egypt that you have taken us away to die in the wilderness? What have you done to us in bringing us out of Egypt? 12 Is not this what we said to you in Egypt: ‘Leave us alone that we may serve the Egyptians’? For it would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the wilderness.”
Exodus 16:2–3 ESV
2 And the whole congregation of the people of Israel grumbled against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness, 3 and the people of Israel said to them, “Would that we had died by the hand of the Lord in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the meat pots and ate bread to the full, for you have brought us out into this wilderness to kill this whole assembly with hunger.”
Exodus 16:
Exodus 16:19–20 ESV
19 And Moses said to them, “Let no one leave any of it over till the morning.” 20 But they did not listen to Moses. Some left part of it till the morning, and it bred worms and stank. And Moses was angry with them.
Exodus 16:
Exodus 17:3–6 ESV
3 But the people thirsted there for water, and the people grumbled against Moses and said, “Why did you bring us up out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and our livestock with thirst?” 4 So Moses cried to the Lord, “What shall I do with this people? They are almost ready to stone me.” 5 And the Lord said to Moses, “Pass on before the people, taking with you some of the elders of Israel, and take in your hand the staff with which you struck the Nile, and go. 6 Behold, I will stand before you there on the rock at Horeb, and you shall strike the rock, and water shall come out of it, and the people will drink.” And Moses did so, in the sight of the elders of Israel.
Exodus 17:

Our Response

Consider
Hebrews 3:1–2 ESV
1 Therefore, holy brothers, you who share in a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our confession, 2 who was faithful to him who appointed him, just as Moses also was faithful in all God’s house.
Hebrews
Hold Fast our confidence and boasting in our hope.
Hebrews 3:6 ESV
6 but Christ is faithful over God’s house as a son. And we are his house, if indeed we hold fast our confidence and our boasting in our hope.
Do not harden our hearts.
Hebrews 3:8 ESV
8 do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion, on the day of testing in the wilderness,
Hebrews 3
Take care
Hebrews 3:12 ESV
12 Take care, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from the living God.
Exhort/Encourage
Hebrews 3:13 ESV
13 But exhort one another every day, as long as it is called “today,” that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.
