Discuss Homework & Review (5 Minutes)
Homework Discussion: Ask participants to share from Lesson 2's Make It Real homework (Questions 1 or 2, and definitions for Question 4).
Definition (Question 4):
Lesson 2 Review:
Lesson 3 builds on 2. deeper examination of the heart. Dynamic
Introductory Question: Have you ever wondered why different things upset different people? How can two people have completely different responses to the same stimuli?
EXAMPLE:
There is a never ending war for the heart
That is what spiritual warfare is
What controls my heart controls my life
The war and the warrior
Your response to external stimulus is not just shaped by the external pressure, rather its shaped by whats going on in your heart
Example: Identity & meaning & purpose = affirmation/praise of man -> everything you do and say will be shaped by that reality.
Get affirmation = good
Dont = bad
Fights, Quarrels, & How Desires Take Control (12 Minutes)
Fights, Quarrels, & How Desires Take Control (12 Minutes)
Key Passage: James 4:1–10
What causes fights and quarrels among you? - Great question. You want to get to the root of the problem
James addresses the fruit of conflict
Could staple on conflict free marriage
Whens the last time you had conflict?
Last month? last week?
Not yelling and fighting
impatience, anger, frustration, irritation
Last night with cooper crying
The answer - “Your passions (pleasures/desires) are at war within you”
If you want to understand your anger you need to look inward, not outward
“War” - control
Root of Conflict: Conflict doesn't come from people or circumstances; it comes from ruling desires warring within us ("You fight because of what you want").
2 observations
Not wrong to desire - everything we do is done by some measure our desire
Not only wrong desires - Doesn’t say evil desires
Desire for a good thing becomes a bad thing when it becomes a ruling thing
We only should be ruled by Jesus
Idolatry is when we are ruled by something other than Jesus. We have exchanged worship Rom 1
The 6 Steps of Idolatry:
The 6 Steps of Idolatry:
Desire: "I want" (legitimate desire) - Not wrong - open hand illustration (jesus in garden)
Demand: "I must" (cravable priority) Open hand is closed
Need: "I will" (perceived as essential to life) Sloppy word (“need affirmation, need attention, need sex)
Expectation: "You should" (demanding others meet it) If i make it a need, I expect you to help me get it
Disappointment: "You didn't!" (personal offense/anger) disappointment is directly tied to expectation (transmission in car after a couple years. “what if i expected it to go in a week or two”
Punishment: "Because you didn't, I will..." (silent treatment, hurtful words, violence) Implode or explode
Spiritual Adultery & Two-Fold Change:
Spiritual Adultery & Two-Fold Change:
Human conflict is rooted in giving God's place to created things (Idolatry).
This is spiritual adultery
Solution?
Not “control” the anger. Not “work on my tone”. Not “4 rules of communication”
Submit yourselves to God
Confess and repent of your idolatry
Then
Real change requires both "washing hands" (behavior) and "purifying hearts" (idols).
You can’t love your neighbor properly until you love your God properly
Leader Illustration: Share a personal story of anger/irritation when someone blocked a personal desire (e.g., wanting to relax vs. doing chores).
Emotions, Desires, & God's Provision (13 Minutes)
Emotions, Desires, & God's Provision (13 Minutes)
Key Passage: Galatians 5:13–26 & Romans 6:1–14
Galatians 5:13 “For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.”
Imagine how little conflict we would have if we actually served one another in love
Marriages
Why is it difficult to serve one another?
Indulging the Flesh:
Indulging the Flesh:
Living controlled by powerful emotions (passions) and cravings rather than God's Word.
We indulge in the desires of the flesh
Galatians 5:16 “But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.”
Galatians 5:24 “And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.”
We have passions(emotions) and desires(cravings)
We let these passions and desires rule our behavior
David and Bathsheba
Passion & desire
Was not serving through love
God's Two Provisions for Freedom:
God's Two Provisions for Freedom:
Union with Christ (Crucified & Risen):
Union with Christ (Crucified & Risen):
Galatians 5:24 “And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.”
Because we died and rose with Christ, sin's mastery over us is broken (Romans 6:1–14). We are free to say "no" to sinful desires.
We are free to not sin
We are freed from the penalty and power of sin, but we still experience it presence
The Warrior Spirit:
The Warrior Spirit:
The Holy Spirit dwells within believers as an active adversary fighting against our sinful nature, empowering us for servant love.
Leader Illustration: Share an example of a time someone affirmed their identity in Christ, said "no" to sinful emotions, and served in love.
Paul Tripp story with son
Recognize the sin in your heart but recognize the power of the spirit who wars for you
