THE GOD OF BEGINNINGS

In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness. And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day. And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters. And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so. And God called the firmament Heaven. And the evening and the morning were the second day. And God said, Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry land appear: and it was so. And God called the dry land Earth; and the gathering together of the waters called he Seas: and God saw that it was good. And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so. And the earth brought forth grass, and herb yielding seed after his kind, and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed was in itself, after his kind: and God saw that it was good. And the evening and the morning were the third day.

I. Introduction

A. God is Eternal (v.1)

In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

Deuteronomy 33:27 AV

The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms: and he shall thrust out the enemy from before thee; and shall say, Destroy them.

God has always existed and will always exist ()

Isaiah 43:10 AV

Ye are my witnesses, saith the LORD, and my servant whom I have chosen: that ye may know and believe me, and understand that I am he: before me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after me.

B. God Is at Work in a Chaotic World (v.2)

Genesis 1:2 AV

And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.

The earth was without form and void

Darkness was upon the face of the deep

The Spirit of God moved to bring about change

This is His purpose in our lives

II. Body

A. God Brings Light (vv.3-5)

“Let there be light: and there was light” (v.3)

God is the source of light

: Moses’s face shone after being in God’s presence

; “Who coverest thyself with light as with a garment”

: “and the glory of the Lord shone round about them”

: “and the Lamb is the light therof”

The sun and the moon are but deputies to bring God’s light to earth

God wants to bring light to our lives through the gospel

“I am the light of the world” ()

2 Corinthians 4:6 AV

For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

“I am the light of the world

Let Christ take the darkness out of your life

B. God Brings Order (vv.6-8)

The light of God has revealed the chaotic condition of the world

Now there must be a dividing of the waters, the forming of the atmosphere

Earth is being prepared for life

Now there must be a dividing of the waters, the forming of the atmosphere

The Holy Spirit brings order out of confusion

When God wants order, He does some dividing!

All humanity is divided like the two dying thieves at the cross ()

One Thief realized his sin and ...

The other thief rejected Christ and joined the crowd in mocking Him

On which side of the cross are you?

C. God Brings Life (vv.9-13)

God divides the water and the land

The Seas, lakes, and rivers appear

Planet Earth is soon to be a life-sustaining place

The Creator calls for fruitfulness

Plants and trees spring up at His command

God also wants us to be fruitful ()

The fruit of the Spirit should be evident in each of us ()

III Conclusion

A. You can have a new beginning, a New Birth ()

B. It will make you a New Creation ()
